Chapter 667: Chapter 673 Eating Flies
For those unversed in the art, Anton’s performance might seem nothing more than distance estimation; however, to those in the know, it was nothing short of a terrifying miracle.
Yang Yi really wanted to know if Anton’s glasses had a built-in rangefinder, as his accuracy was scientifically improbable!
Some people are naturally good with distances, though typically at close range; to discern them so clearly beyond six hundred meters was unheard of, at least to Yang Yi.
Yang Yi felt his legs weaken and his liver tremble.
He was still intimidated by that bastard Anton. Yang Yi was keenly aware that Anton was trying to assert his dominance, although revealing his shooting prowess early on. Yet, Anton’s approach greatly daunted Yang Yi—he had succeeded.
Sniping is a systematic undertaking, not just about aiming the scope and pulling the trigger. Picking up an entirely unfamiliar rifle and hitting a target seven or eight hundred meters away was sheer nonsense, pure and simple.
Thus, although arrogant and haughty, Anton would never skimp on the necessary preparation for shooting just to show off; he had fired over a hundred rounds, meticulously executing each shot.
The farther the target, the more shots required; this was normal as bullet spread increases with distance. Anton needed to know how much his rifle spread, and at what range he could ensure a hit on a human-sized target.
At a distance of twelve hundred meters, Anton’s shot grouping was controlled to the size of a basketball—a respectable precision. Then, at thirteen hundred meters, the spread increased to that of two basketballs side by side; the bullet’s velocity decayed significantly, making precision unreliable at that range.
Anton decided not to continue extending his shooting distance, hence he set his maximum shooting range at twelve hundred meters.
Using one hundred and twenty bullets and exactly one hour, Anton completed his trial shooting.
"That will do. The rifle is good. Thank you for preparing it for me and for these bullets; their precision is excellent."
Anton turned back and smiled at Yang Yi, "It seems I won’t need to trial shoot three hundred bullets after all; this is enough now."
Yang Yi fell silent for a moment, and then he pulled a bullet from one of the boxes left by Anton’s side during the shooting.
After waving the bullet in his hand at Anton, Yang Yi said with a smile, "That’s fine; you can continue and finish off the remaining bullets. I only need this one. To hit a target, you don’t need a second bullet, and I don’t need a trial shooting. After all, I’m familiar with my own rifle, so you’d better fire a few more shots. Getting more familiar with your weapon is always beneficial."
Anton maintained his smile, but his insides were churning as if he had swallowed a fly, a fly that had just buzzed off a dung heap, no less.
Those were the words Anton had wanted to say, but Yang Yi beat him to it.
After a brief pause, Anton smiled faintly and said, "Sure, that’s a good suggestion."
Although initially not planning to shoot any further, Anton decided to continue his trial shots and began firing once again.
Yang Yi’s heart bled. Good rifles were hard to come by, and high-precision bullets were neither easy to find nor cheap.
The bullets Yang Yi brought were Paul’s carefully collected prizes. Although replaceable and cost being no object, obtaining .338 Lapua Magnum rounds in Ukraine was always somewhat troublesome. Anton’s successive trial shots were using up these bullets, which genuinely pained Yang Yi.
"Uh, sorry for the interruption."
Anton ceased firing, and Yang Yi spoke with a smile, "Although I don’t need a trial shooting, I feel it’s unfair as you’re not familiar with my rifle. Let me take a few shots instead, or you could try shooting with my rifle."
"Alright."
Anton happily accepted Yang Yi’s invitation to try shooting.
Yang Yi felt a lump in his chest again.
Anton completely blocked Yang Yi’s chance to try shooting and also took the opportunity to find out the extreme range of Yang Yi’s rifle.
When it was time to show off, he acted as if he was the only one that mattered, then when there was an advantage to be gained, he’d be willing to lose face completely.
While it looked like Anton was showing weakness, he actually succeeded in infuriating Yang Yi half to death.
Having made the offer, Yang Yi didn’t hesitate and took out his rifle, handing it to Anton, then he said indifferently, "Coincidentally, it’s also zeroed at four hundred meters. Please shoot all the bullets in the magazine so I can load this one."
Yang Yi shook the bullet in his hand, feeding Anton another metaphorical fly.
Anton’s trial shooting attracted everyone’s attention, and Jethro looked at Yang Yi, then at Anton, with a face full of confusion.
Using Yang Yi’s rifle, Anton fired twenty shots, emptying two magazines, then turned to Yang Yi and said, "Not bad, not bad at all, this is a good gun. What model is this? I’ve never seen it before. Hmm, the maximum range is about the same, quite good for a semi-automatic rifle."
Yang Yi smiled as he took back his rifle, then he said to Anton, "Top-end stuff, just released. It’s normal that you don’t recognize it."
Without answering Anton’s question, and insinuating that Anton was behind the times, Yang Yi glanced at his watch and said with a look of difficulty, "Ah, I was planning to take care of you and let you try a few more shots, but time isn’t on our side. How about this, continue trying after you arrive, and for now, let’s hurry on our way."
While speaking, Yang Yi loaded the bullet into the chamber.
Yang Yi’s move was very risky, super risky, because when firing the first shot with a rifle, the impact point often differs from the second shot. The temperature of the rifle barrel can affect where the bullet lands, and snipers are usually more accurate with the second shot.
But Yang Yi was indicating that he intended to resolve the issue with a single bullet. Whether he could do it or not mattered less than giving Anton another figurative fly to swallow.
Anton slowly got up from the ground and, with a smile, said to Yang Yi, "Let’s go."
At that moment, Jethro said to Yang Yi, "Come here, ride with me. I’d like to talk to you about something."
Yang Yi got into Jethro’s car, and once they started driving, Jethro said to Yang Yi, "You and your subordinate seem to have some issues?"
Yang Yi laughed heartily and replied, "That’s right. No one concedes when it comes to shooting, so we decided to compete to see who’s stronger. It’s a form of benign competition within the team."
Jethro, with an expression of realization, said, "Oh, I see, that’s quite normal, very normal. But while you compete, make sure it doesn’t affect our operation, okay? After all, our target is staying in a military camp, and you might really only get one chance to shoot. So I think it might be better to settle this in some other way."
Yang Yi chuckled and said, "Don’t worry, I wouldn’t take the shot if I wasn’t confident. After all, I only have one chance."
Jethro was silent for a moment, then he shrugged and said, "Forgive my bluntness, but I think Anton has a better chance of winning. I watched his shooting just now, and my gut tells me he’ll win. I don’t want to be a judge, but I’m just curious if you guys take bets?"
