Chapter 649: Chapter 655: Minor Character

Hubert shook as he watched two men be killed right in front of him, without anyone even asking who they were.

He feared this sort of no questions, no words, just bang-bang shooting to death. Hubert was truly afraid that after someone waved their hand, he would become the next one with a blown head.

His knees buckling, Hubert involuntarily fell to his knees on the ground.

Jethro originally had a lot to say, but seeing Hubert’s cowardly behavior, he lost the desire to speak. He only said softly, "Here’s some money for you."

Hubert’s eyes lifeless, he opened his mouth but couldn’t make a sound.

Jethro took a bundle of money from the bag and placed it on the recently cleared coffee table. He only put down one bundle of money, then said to Hubert, "This is a hundred thousand US dollars, which I’m prepared to give you."

Hubert’s shaking became less intense. He looked at Jethro incredulously, as well as the bundle of banknotes on the table.

Jethro waved his hand and said, "Stand up, speak while standing."

Hubert tried to lift himself with his hands, but his first attempt to stand failed, so Rodriguez supported his arm, helping Hubert to his feet.

Jethro, smiling at Hubert, asked, "First tell me, what are you responsible for?"

Hubert swallowed saliva, then said in a low voice, "Customs declaration, uh, yeah, I often play the role of the goods owner in Odessa port’s customs declaration, if there’s an issue discovered by customs in that country, they would only trace it back to me. That’s what I do."

Yang Yi felt a bit disappointed in his heart because Hubert was indeed the most insignificant character in the arms trade system; he was a typical scapegoat, or rather, someone prepared to be used as a scapegoat.

However, Jethro was interested and asked, "You handle customs, so you should be in Odessa’s port, right? Why would you be in Kyiv?"

Hubert’s face showed a flattering expression as he said, "That’s because I need to maintain the appearance of a goods owner in Kyiv, I often meet with the big shots in charge of customs. I hardly ever need to go to Odessa myself, Kanchelskis has already taken care of things there."

"Kanchelskis?"

"Yes, yes, our arms shipments are handled by him for loading and shipping. He’s in the port of Odessa, in fact, I don’t have to do anything, just sign some documents."

Jethro smiled and said, "So, have you shipped out a lot of arms recently?"

"Lots, a lot. I just signed off on customs for a batch of wheat that’s supposed to go to Somalia, but inside the wheat, there’s a lot of arms, mainly ammunition. Lately, there’s been at least one ship a month heading to Somalia, mainly with wheat. Transporting wheat is done by bulk carriers, which can mix bullets and shells and other small arms ammunitions inside, but recently there have been shipments of cannons and armored vehicles, so bulk carriers can’t be used. We are currently gathering some stuff that needs container transport so we can mix the larger arms inside to ship them out, heh heh, heh heh."

Without waiting for Jethro to ask, Hubert spilled everything he knew, coupled with a flattering smile.

Now Yang Yi understood that Hubert’s identity might not be very important, but his job allowed him to access one of the most core secrets: when Big Ivan’s group was shipping goods, on which ship, and how much.

Learning that Big Ivan’s arms dealing hadn’t stopped and was in fact booming, Jethro’s expression darkened. After pondering for a moment, he said to Hubert, "Do you know what to do?"

Hubert immediately replied, "I do, I do, oh, oh... but please tell me what I should do exactly. Whatever you ask of me, I’ll do it."

Jethro smiled, placed the second stack of money on the table, and then said to Hubert, "Tell me all about the customs you’ve handled, how much stuff was shipped, how many batches, tell me everything."

Hubert looked troubled and said, "The thing is, many times I actually have no idea how much really was shipped. I just generally know what the cargo is, uh... But I do know what has been stockpiled at the port recently. There are thirty-six cannons in the port warehouse, along with shells. As for rifles and rocket launchers, they are always stockpiled. I just know that the goods for Somalia are in urgent demand recently."

Jethro asked with surprise, "Wait, you know where the warehouses at the port are?"

"Oh, I do. I didn’t before, but I found out recently. It’s actually in the port area of Odessa. There are several large warehouses. I know Kanchelskis’s brother-in-law’s sister’s husband, he manages the warehouses. Last time we drank together, he took me inside. We drank in the warehouse. If it were up to that bastard Kanchelskis, he wouldn’t let me know where the warehouses are. I always thought they were far from the Odessa port. I didn’t expect them to be inside the port."

Jethro’s face remained expressionless, but having had several contacts with him, Yang Yi knew that Jethro was actually ecstatic.

"Tell me where the warehouses are. If I gave you a map, could you point them out?"

"Can’t point them out, they’re very easy to find. I’ll tell you and you’ll know."

Jethro had received a gain he had never expected, and he was truly satisfied. Then he smiled at Hubert and said, "Good, now tell me what models those cannons are. Are they self-propelled artillery?"

"They’re not self-propelled artillery, they’re towed guns, 2A65, 152mm large-caliber guns."

Jethro pointed to the two corpses and asked, "So what were these two men doing here?"

"They came to do business. I told you there’s a batch of cannons they wanted to ship out. But such large cargo is difficult to get on the ship unnoticed. Every time there is such large cargo to board, I would go in the capacity of the cargo owner to deal with a deputy director from the Ukraine Commerce Bureau. Just give him a sum of money and it’s done."

"Who is he?"

"Artem Krazov. The shipment this time is especially large, so two people came with me to see him. Ah, you see, each time we used to give fifty thousand US dollars. We saw him a few days ago. Artem didn’t agree right away. He said he needed to wait a bit more because the situation isn’t great. Kanchelskis told us to settle this quickly. He said we could give Artem one hundred thousand US dollars this time."

Jethro nodded in satisfaction, then he pushed the money on the coffee table towards Hubert, and smilingly said, "The money is yours. Keep doing your job. If you’re supposed to deliver money to Artem, then do so, as if nothing tonight ever happened. All you need to do is send me a copy of the customs information whenever you deal with it, got it?"

Hubert nodded eagerly, "Got it, got it, I understand. But those two men are dead, how... how do I explain that?"

Jethro smiled and said, "I’ll figure out a way for you to have a reasonable explanation. Don’t worry, nothing that happened tonight will put you in any danger."
