Chapter 647: Chapter 653: Mental Preparation

The 9mm pistol rounds fell short in instantly incapacitating a person unless they hit a particularly lethal spot.

So when Yang Yi realized his shot didn’t immediately render the enemy incapable of movement, his instinctive response was to lunge to the side as quickly as possible.

The scene played out like this.

Yang Yi fired at a man’s forehead at point-blank range with his gun, then turned and shot another person in the chest inside the bedroom. As he fired, his body tilted right and fell to one side because the person he hit merely staggered but didn’t fall.

The sound of gunfire echoed once more as Yang Yi, now on the ground, crawled forward hastily because the wall wasn’t load-bearing and could be penetrated by AK74 bullets.

Yang Yi crawled a good distance before turning his head to see the bullet holes climbing higher up the wall, indicating the shooter’s difficulty in controlling the muzzle rise, until the shots struck the ceiling.

The experience of being targeted by automatic rifle fire twice in a row had scared the daylight out of Yang Yi; it was enough to make someone wet themselves, though breaking out into a cold sweat was already a lucky escape.

Scrambling to his feet, Yang Yi dashed into another bedroom.

For ease of movement, Yang Yi hadn’t brought a rifle or worn a bulletproof vest. He only carried two grenades, which he wouldn’t have brought if he had a choice, as he preferred to travel as light as possible.

Another bedroom door opened, and two men came out, one after the other—one carrying a rifle and the other a pistol.

In a confined space, running wasn’t the fastest option, so Yang Yi leaped over the sofa with a raise of his leg, then fired midair. The shot struck the neck of the man holding the rifle but wasn’t a clean hit. As Yang Yi landed, the second shot was fired point-blank into the rifleman’s chest.

After taking two hits, the man with the rifle shook but didn’t fall, prompting Yang Yi to raise his gun and fire a third shot under the man’s chin.

During close-quarters combat, a rifle offered no advantage. Yang Yi never let the enemy get a bead on him, but he had wasted too many shots on the same person.

As he raised the gun to fire under the enemy’s chin, Yang Yi’s left hand drew a knife from his waistband and thrust it forward.

A gunshot and a knife strike—Yang Yi stabbed the man with the pistol in the throat, twisted the blade and sliced outward, nearly severing the man’s neck. His left hand quickly retracted, slashing severely across the gun-wielding right hand, exposing bone, and then struck down with the back of his left hand to knock the pistol to the ground.

Finally freeing his right hand, Yang Yi pressed his gun against the last person’s forehead, but there was no need to shoot—the man whose carotid artery had been cut was already dead.

With a knife in one hand and a gun in the other, Yang Yi stepped into the bedroom to check and saw no third person inside, nor anyone left in the other bedroom.

Yang Yi sheathed his knife and took out his phone to quickly record the five dead men. Listening to noises drawing nearer from outside, he pocketed his phone, approached the living room window, looked down, then opened the window and jumped out.

It was just the second floor. When his feet hit the ground, Yang Yi lunged forward in a roll to dissipate the force of the fall, then stood up and started running.

The quiet assassination had turned into a gunfight, and Yang Yi was very dissatisfied with this outcome, but he had no choice. He hadn’t wanted to cause such a commotion. Jethro’s chosen target had several people protecting him, armed at all times, with someone always on guard without sleep. What could Yang Yi do?

Quickly approaching the wall, Yang Yi climbed over it. Once he landed on the other side, he ran straight to the car that was waiting for him. As soon as he was in the car, he said urgently, "Let’s go!"

The car immediately sped off. Jethro, looking at the dirt-covered Yang Yi, asked, "How did it go? You okay?"

"I’m fine."

Taking a breath, Yang Yi said in a low voice, "There were four people protecting the target. I couldn’t tell which one was the target. Take a look."

Without going into details about what had happened inside, Yang Yi briefly mentioned what occurred and handed his mobile phone back to Jethro.

Jethro turned on the phone and, after watching the video Yang Yi had recorded, nodded and said, "The target is inside, the one whose throat was cut."

After putting the phone back in his pocket, Jethro paused for a moment and said, "This operation has alerted quite a few people. Big Ivan’s men will get the news very soon. We’ll need to change our plan. Boyata, find Hubert."

Boyata changed the direction of the car. Jethro took a deep breath and, with a smile at Yang Yi, said, "This guy is a minor player, but he plays a significant role in Big Ivan’s arms transport network. You know, the type who’s not high up but still quite influential. I think we can win him over before he gets too scared and hides. If he would defect to us, great; if not, we’ll kill him."

Yang Yi nodded and said, "Alright."

Boyata laughed and said, "The best part is that it’s on the way. We can swing by Hubert’s place first and then move on to the next target. Big Ivan has a lot of people in Kyiv; it’s the capital of Ukraine, where most of the upper echelons live, but that’s Corkdor’s territory. Hmm, if we can take care of two more people tonight, then we can head to Odessa."

Yang Yi said softly, "To Odessa?"

"Yes, Odessa, one of Ukraine’s two major ports. A portion of the arms Big Ivan ships out of Ukraine comes from Sevastopol, and the rest from Odessa. Now that Crimea is in the hands of the Russians, it’s not very convenient to operate there. So we’ll go to Odessa first, disturb Big Ivan’s arms shipping channels, and then see. Completely cutting them off may not be possible, but at least we can throw them into disarray for a while."

Yang Yi murmured, "How long will it take to get to Odessa?"

Jethro thought for a moment and then smiled, "Odessa is a major port, and there are quite a few people working for Big Ivan there. I have a list of six people who must either be eliminated or convinced to join our side. Perhaps we could get more information out of these six people. So, I can’t say exactly how long it will take; in short, how much time we’ll spend in Odessa depends on how quickly you can act."

Yang Yi sighed and said, "Okay, we’ll sort things out here and head straight for Odessa. It shouldn’t take too long."

Jethro said indifferently, "First Kyiv, then Odessa. These two places are relatively easy to handle. The troubles and difficulties lie in the armory; we have to get into the military barracks. Be mentally prepared for that."
