Chapter 623: Chapter 631 We’re Finished
Jethro left with his team in a leisurely fashion, and that’s when Yang Yi and Brian went their separate ways, taking different vehicles.
Midway through the drive, Jethro received a call, and he spoke with an extremely urgent tone, "We’re rushing over now, almost there, yes, we’re about to arrive. At most ten minutes before we get there. I’m sorry, I’m not trying to make excuses, but boss, it’s an hour and a half’s drive from our base to the battlefield. We set off as soon as we got your orders and have been on the road ever since..."
Jethro’s expression suddenly softened, but his tone was one of extreme astonishment, "What? He escaped? How is that possible! Didn’t the Ukrainian military send troops?"
Yang Yi could vaguely hear some sounds through Jethro’s phone, but since everyone’s phones were secure against eavesdropping, the sounds that could be heard were extremely faint, so he could only make out that there were sounds, without being able to comprehend what was actually being said.
"Yes, I understand."
After hanging up, Jethro let out a long sigh and then said in a low voice to Yang Yi, who was driving, "We can go back now, no, let’s still check it out. Speed up."
Jethro fell silent for a long while before Yang Yi finally spoke in a low voice, "Does that mean we don’t have to fight? Sorry, I just want to make sure if it’s still particularly dangerous when we arrive."
Jethro replied softly, "There’s no danger now, because Big Ivan has left. Someone came to rescue him, and those present couldn’t resist."
Yang Yi let out a soft sigh, then gave a wry smile, "Er, I still feel a bit regretful."
"Regretful? There’s nothing to regret, you should feel lucky."
After speaking lightly, Jethro turned his head to look at Yang Yi, who was driving, "How long have you been a mercenary?"
"Hmm, not very long..."
"Alright, I won’t ask you in detail, but I want to know, have you ever seen one person withstand the siege of hundreds, one person who left the CIA and Ukrainian military with no will to fight, have you seen that?"
"I haven’t seen it, haven’t even heard of it. I think it’s impossible."
"Yes, impossible. It does sound incredibly unbelievable. Not just you, everyone thinks it’s impossible. Yet, it really happened."
Jethro sighed deeply and then spoke gravely, "There were almost no wounded in this battle."
"Um, what do you mean?"
"They all died, all of them. Anybody who dared to attack was dead. Stand up and you’d be shot. Many from the CIA died; they didn’t dare to move anymore. More than twenty Ukrainian soldiers died, and so an entire company of soldiers didn’t dare to continue the attack. Can you believe it?"
"I wouldn’t believe it unless I saw it with my own eyes. Honestly, I just can’t believe it."
Jethro gave a bitter smile, then said softly, "CIA has been urging the boss, thinking the enemy has only one person left. They figured if they report the situation to the boss, he’d dare to send troops. But you know what? The more this happens, the more scared I am..."
Jethro admitting his fear left Yang Yi not knowing what to say.
"I really am scared, Robot, I’m truly scared. I can’t think of anyone who could face a hundred alone, can’t think of anyone who could withstand the most elite special forces of the United States, especially under the watchful eyes of the U.S. President. Why, why?"
Yang Yi shrugged and said, "It can only mean the enemy is very powerful."
"Yes, the enemy is powerful, but their power exceeds the limits of all our imaginations. What does that tell us? It tells us we underestimated Big Ivan, Deyo misjudged the situation. He thought Big Ivan was done for, but in fact, Big Ivan won in a direct confrontation with the United States. His people withdrew, even taking all their dead with them."
Jethro looked despondent and defeated as he waved his hand weakly and said in a low voice, "Why have I lived so long? Because I know what to do and when it’s right. Clearly, Big Ivan is much stronger than us. If the Americans can’t deal with him, then we are truly finished, done for... everything is over..."
Boyata said softly, "Boss, maybe things aren’t that bad."
Jethro scoffed, but his laugh was filled with sarcasm.
"You have no idea what’s happening!"
Jethro waved his hand again and continued, "The Americans are pressuring the Ukrainian government, the Ukrainian military sent out fighter bombers, the Americans tried everything they could think of. They thought aerial bombing was a good option, just like they always do."
"That sounds right! Can’t Big Ivan be dealt with that way?"
"But General Hagel sent fighter jets to intercept. The Americans want the Ukrainian government to bomb Big Ivan, yet the top commanders of the Ukrainian military are sending jets to intercept. What does that mean? It means Hagel will stop at nothing to protect Big Ivan. We underestimated Big Ivan, so we’re done for."
Yang Yi was speechless.
Black Devil, oh Black Devil, what kind of force are you, really? Big Ivan, you’re just an arms dealer, but how powerful are you exactly?
Jethro continued in a low voice, "A single person can resist an entire army. Such an opponent, such military force used against us... Big Ivan can make Hagel abandon everything. Why would Hagel do this? Out of gratitude? For a benefit? Loyalty? No, none of those. There’s only one reason—he has no other choice, so he is forced, completely controlled by Big Ivan."
Boyata said softly, "But, but..."
After hemming and hawing, Boyata could only let out a light sigh.
Jethro said gravely, "We’ve misjudged the situation and will have to pay a bloody price. I’m not a defeatist, but we’re really done for unless..."
Boyata asked urgently, "Unless what?"
"A ceasefire! If that’s not enough, then surrender!"
After Jethro said this with a pale face, Boyata asked anxiously, "But Big Ivan is so vengeful. Will he let us off?"
Jethro didn’t answer and merely gave Boyata a sidelong glance.
Boyata immediately looked as if he’d had an epiphany but said nothing.
Yang Yi understood what was going on earlier than Boyata.
It was Deyo who had offended Big Ivan, and it was Deyo that Big Ivan couldn’t let go, not Jethro.
Because Jethro hadn’t caused any actual harm to Big Ivan.
So, it was Jethro who sought peace, even considering surrendering.
Neither Jethro nor Boyata spoke again; after hesitating for a moment, Yang Yi said softly, "So, Big Ivan was rescued?"
Jethro said helplessly, "The problem is, no one has confirmed whether Big Ivan was even in there to begin with! If Big Ivan was there, it would be somewhat manageable. But if Big Ivan wasn’t there at all, then, I don’t know what to say... we’re done for, sooner or later."
