Chapter 609: Chapter 617: Turning the Tables
Yang Yi hadn’t been mixed up in Africa, so he didn’t know how war was waged there, but according to Zhang Yong, the heaviest firepower they had was mortars and rocket launchers, and having a 107mm rocket launcher was considered a big killer.
But in Ukraine, the skirmishes had also been minor; however, after the Ukrainian turmoil, going out to fight without at least a heavy cannon became downright embarrassing.
So what Jethro said was true; Ferdinand thought he was formidable, but that depended on where and who he was up against. Not to mention the weapons that could be deployed between two arms dealers at war, even in a basic brawl, Ferdinand was no match.
The men lying in the yard with their arms dangling were the most vivid example.
Ferdinand was left speechless by Jethro’s words, but being speechless didn’t mean he was convinced.
But Jethro hadn’t finished speaking.
"Your biggest reliance is your ability to fight, but your men can’t beat my bodyguards. Who else can you rely on? The Fearless Mercenary Corps? The people your boss sent you? But the thing is, if you can only give orders to go and ’kill someone for me,’ and cannot say ’come with me and let’s kill someone,’ then what’s your purpose here?"
The difference between ’go for me’ and ’come with me’ is significant.
What Deyo now needs is someone capable of fighting and killing, but Ferdinand and his loyal followers had been exposed by Jethro’s bodyguards. So what value did Ferdinand still hold?
After this lecture, Ferdinand’s face color changed several times, and in the end, he said bitterly, "You think you’ve already..."
"No, no, shut up, now listen to me, it’s not about what I think I have achieved, rather who do you think you are? Do you think your boss can’t do without you? No, the boss just doesn’t want to send you away immediately after having sent you here, but if you keep causing trouble with me, what will be the consequences? Someone who is not very capable, only knows how to fight internally but can’t even win an internal fight, against someone whose only job is procurement, heh, heh..."
Jethro was being very straightforward, but even if his points were valid, Ferdinand emotionally couldn’t accept them.
The phenomenon of fury rising from embarrassment was exactly Ferdinand’s situation.
Ferdinand suddenly stood up and then pointed at Jethro.
If Ferdinand dared to give an order to ’kill them for me,’ he would surely die first, and it wasn’t certain whether the men he brought with him could detain Yang Yi and the rest. The fight last night, although weaponless, had already highlighted the gap in strength; the people Ferdinand brought were simply not up to par, not at all.
So while Ferdinand was agitated, he was unable to make any overly extreme moves, and just then, Jethro said calmly, "Calm down, sit, let me ask you another question. Have you thought about whether the boss sent the two of us here to keep each other in check? If I took you out, the boss would only take me out and then send someone else. If you oust me, you’re capable, but the boss would surely send someone simpler to restrain you. It’s such a simple concept; if you can’t understand that, then I really will have to find a new partner."
Ferdinand’s face went through a myriad of changes, again and again, before he finally retracted his extended hand and sat back down with a steely blue face.
Although what Jethro said was all true, Yang Yi was still very curious about how Jethro managed to control the situation so easily.
This Ferdinand, it’s not quite right to say he has no brains, but it is true that he isn’t very cunning. Perhaps his only advantage is his willingness to fight bravely.
So, Ferdinand was somewhat useful against external enemies because no matter how strong the enemy, he would dare to risk his life in battle. But when faced with an internal competitor like Jethro, and after exposing that his strength was just so-so following a fight, Ferdinand was done for.
Just like that, with just a few words, Jethro had Ferdinand frozen.
Having completely seized the initiative, Jethro said in a deep voice, "Now the boss has put me in charge of the finances, and you’ll continue to manage the people. The previous funds are still under your control, but the next installment of funding will be given directly to me. From now on, I’ll handle the finances of the Fearless Mercenary Corps."
Ferdinand took a deep breath but said nothing.
Jethro continued, "I won’t hold you back, and as for you... you also won’t have the opportunity to interfere with my work. So now it depends on whether we can truly cooperate. If we can work together and complete the tasks beautifully, then we can both stay here. But if we cannot cooperate, and the boss still wants to achieve his goals, he’ll have no choice but to replace someone. Whether it’s you or me, or perhaps even both of us, what do you think is the most likely?"
Finally, Ferdinand spoke. He said coldly, "May the best man win."
Jethro laughed out loud but then instantly turned stern and said in a deep voice, "The boss sent me here just to assist you, but after last night’s contest, I wasn’t punished; instead, I took over your authority over the funds. Can’t you see what’s going on? Even if I take you out and then immediately ask the boss to send someone else to take charge of combat operations, do you believe he wouldn’t even ask about your situation? At this point, can’t you let go of your ridiculous pride and the thought of competing with me, you fool!"
Ferdinand stood up again, looking like he was about to explode with rage, but Jethro did not give him the chance to burst out, shouting again, "Sit down! If you stand up a third time, I guarantee you won’t have the chance to sit back down!"
Yang Yi immediately pulled out his gun and aimed it at Ferdinand’s head. Though it wasn’t necessary to draw a weapon, his own boss was putting on a show, so he had to play along.
Ferdinand’s men, guns in hand, started to scurry out, but Yang Yi didn’t even lift his head, just coldly watching Ferdinand.
After taking a deep breath, Ferdinand finally sank back down onto the sofa.
Jethro said coldly, "I am past the age of quarreling with people, so I forgive your offense against me and your impulsiveness and recklessness. For a young man, these are forgivable. But what I will not tolerate is you hindering the boss’s matters out of spite. Finding someone to replace you would take time, and time is something we cannot afford to waste now. So listen well, either cooperate or die."
Ferdinand had completely lost his temper, not because he wasn’t angry, but because he had no chance to act on it.
Looking at the silent Ferdinand, Jethro smiled and said, "That’s more like it. No matter how upset you are inside, at least remember that the boss’s business comes first. Alright, let me tell you how we’re going to cooperate. The choice of target must be agreed upon by both of us, but once the target is chosen, I will not meddle in how you conduct the operations. Just tell me when it’s time to pay. You name the amount, and I won’t refuse to pay nor will I hold you up, whether it’s the agreed-upon mercenary fee or the bonuses you want to hand out, as long as it’s not excessive, I will provide for you. Got it?"
