Chapter 607 - 615 Chain Reaction
Chapter 607: Chapter 615 Chain Reaction
Ferdinand was planning to join forces with Jethro to lure out Hagel and kill him.
Should he let Deyo kill Hagel, or sell the information for some money?
Currently, Yang Yi and Jethro had a good relationship, which went beyond that of employer and bodyguard; they had a good personal relationship, but Yang Yi was a spy.
Spy is the more polite term; undercover agent sounds decent too. However, the uglier terms are mole, traitor, or double-crosser.
He didn’t want to betray Jethro, but whether it was his own identity and profession, his goals, or the overall interests of the Organization of Water, Yang Yi had to betray Jethro, and that caused him great pain.
Despite the pain and guilt, Yang Yi wouldn’t confide in anyone, nor would he hesitate about what he had to do, because he was a spy.
So, Yang Yi turned around and sold Jethro out.
After Jethro returned to his room to rest, Yang Yi set up two fire lines to prevent Jethro from accidentally getting close and overhearing his conversation.
Yang Yi never understood how one could be so unguarded while doing something extremely important, to make a call that could mean death if overheard, and still be approached and eavesdropped on so easily.
And that was a situation Yang Yi would never allow to happen.
After calling Justin, Yang Yi spoke in a very calm and low voice, "I have some intelligence I want to sell you, starting at ten million US dollars paid upfront. Then I will tell you a big secret."
"What kind of intelligence is it?"
"It’s about the situation between Deyo and Big Ivan, and it’s significant intelligence that could affect the outcome."
Justin was silent for a moment, then he spoke in a low voice, "Do you know that Andre is already dead?"
"What about it?"
Justin sounded very helpless, "My client was Andre, but now that he’s dead, even if you really have valuable information, how could I possibly take it if no one’s paying?"
Yang Yi fell silent, then he said softly, "You could sell it to Big Ivan, I know for sure you have a connection with him."
Justin sighed again and said, "Buddy, I don’t have direct contact with Big Ivan. Maybe he is still alive, maybe he’s already dead, but either way, now that Andre is the one in charge of Ukraine and he was the one paying, now that he’s dead, I can’t be buying intelligence that will expire soon. So save it, I’m not buying any intelligence on Big Ivan and Deyo right now."
Yang Yi was at a loss for words, because he hadn’t expected this situation. While he knew about Andre’s death, he didn’t realize that no one would want the intelligence after that.
"So what do we do?"
"Either you give the intelligence to me for free, or just keep it for yourself. Anyway, I’m not going to take any intelligence on Deyo and Big Ivan, not even for one dollar. I... I’ve taken a huge loss..."
Justin couldn’t help but sigh again. He seemed genuinely sad, his voice even sounded different. Yang Yi felt he might have had a good relationship with Andre and so was grieving his friend’s death.
Yang Yi dazed for a while, then he said softly, "Not even one dollar?"
"Not even one cent."
Yang Yi also felt helpless. He thought it over and decided his main goal was to prevent Deyo from succeeding. It would have been great to make some money along the way, but if that wasn’t possible, he still needed to get the intelligence out there.
"What if I sell it to you for less? One million US dollars. It’s truly important intelligence, and I’d give you the whole package."
"I wouldn’t take it for one hundred bucks. Buddy, it’s not that I’m trying to drive your price down, I simply can’t invest another cent."
Yang Yi sighed, speaking lowly, "Alright then, I’ll give you the intelligence for free, uh, wait, are you going to turn to Deyo’s side?"
Justin spoke seriously, "It’s hard to say. I’m assessing the situation. If things are truly looking bad for Big Ivan, I might have to side with Deyo to recoup some losses."
The intelligence couldn’t be given away for free now. Yang Yi hesitated before saying in a low voice, "What if I give you the intelligence for free, and then you pass a message for me, will that work?"
"Hmm, tell me the intelligence first."
"No way, you first tell me if you’ll help or not."
Justin exhaled and said, "Sea God, Andre was killed just tonight, and some of the investments I made might have gone to waste. If Big Ivan shows up, or if someone else is sent to take over Andre’s duties, then our intelligence business can continue. But if Big Ivan still refuses to appear, and no one replaces Andre, then I can only assume Big Ivan is likely to lose. Right now, I’m like a rat on a sinking ship; I need to jump onto another ship before this one goes down. So, I can’t do too much."
Of course, an intelligence broker would be a weather vane, every single one of them. No matter how closely Justin had worked with Big Ivan’s forces before, with Andre’s death, Justin had to carefully consider the consequences of continuing to work with Big Ivan.
Yang Yi frowned and said, "So should we wrap up our current operation now?"
"Don’t rush, what if Big Ivan shows up again? If Big Ivan does reappear, then everything remains as usual, your intelligence will continue to be valuable. We just need to be patient and wait to see what changes happen."
Justin’s reliance was no longer guaranteed. Yang Yi thought for a moment, with some resignation, "Alright then, let me know if there’s any news."
Yang Yi hung up the phone.
The Organization of Water was a new intelligence organization, and their weaknesses had already started to become apparent, namely that their reliable channels for disseminating intelligence were too few. However, even if the Organization of Water had other intelligence brokers to work with, at least for this time it wouldn’t have mattered. If even Justin, who had worked with Big Ivan, refused to take the intelligence, those strictly neutral intelligence brokers would be even less willing to accept it.
After much thought, Yang Yi ultimately still decided he couldn’t let Ferdinand succeed in killing General Hagel.
It didn’t matter if the plan got totally disrupted; he would just devise a new one.
If he directly told General Hagel the truth, then when Jethro and Hagel met, it would be dangerous for Yang Yi and the rest because Hagel would likely take the initiative to strike first. The simplest method would be to ambush the troops hidden at the meeting between Jethro and Hagel and set up a counter-ambush. The Organization of Water, responsible for Jethro’s safety, would naturally be among those to be ambushed.
Or, while it might not be possible to sell the intelligence for money, could he use this opportunity to establish contact with Hagel? Yang Yi pondered this possibility. But no matter what, both stopping Ferdinand from killing Hagel and not compromising his own safety was not going to be an easy task.
