Chapter 491: Chapter 479: Godspeed
Although the meal was made with non-perishable items, the taste was good, really good.
Anton had just come out of the black prison, and he had the patience to cook for himself, and to wait until the food was ready before eating. Yang Yi felt that he was already very, very impressive.
Anton ate very quickly, but his manners were not crude at all, even quite refined. The eating habits of those three young Alpha Group members, however, were much less pleasant to watch; describing them as devouring their food like wolves would not be an overstatement.
Knowing there were many people to feed, Anton made plenty, but the two large pots of stew were soon wiped clean, making Yang Yi feel a bit guilty for having some as a midnight snack.
"Uh, the taste is really good."
Watching Anton finally finish his meal, Yang Yi said sheepishly, while Anton smiled and replied, "A bachelor needs to know how to take care of himself. If you don’t know how to cook, you’re in trouble."
The three Alpha Group members had finished eating almost at the same time as Anton, not because they had had enough, but because there was nothing left in the pot.
Anton got up to clean the empty bowls, and then he stopped a member of Alpha Group who wanted to help him with the cleanup, smiling, "You’re guests, I’ll take care of it."
The three Alpha Group members seemed somewhat uneasy. Yang Yi cleared his throat and said to them, "Alright, gentlemen, please introduce yourselves."
A tall and sturdy man who looked to be in his thirties spoke in a deep voice, "My name is Roman Kalyaev, I’m 28 years old, from Poltava. I’ve served in Alpha Group for five years as a machine gunner with the rank of staff sergeant."
The second man stood up, saying in a deep voice, "Vitali, 29 years old, from Odessa, staff sergeant, served for five years as a rifleman."
Vitali kept his introduction brief, and after he sat down, the third man got up and said in a deep voice, "Sergei Koval, 28 years old, sergeant in rank, served four years as a rifleman, I come from Vinnytsia."
Yang Yi nodded with a smile, "Good, there are a few things I want to go over with you first. Do you all understand your current situation?"
Roman replied solemnly, "We know, we have nowhere left to turn. The new authorities will not let us go."
Yang Yi took a breath and said, "So why did you join Trident? Can you tell me about it? It’s okay, just say whatever is on your mind."
Roman took a breath, "There’s not much to say. I came because I heard there was money to be made. Many of my brothers are from Russia. When my superior decided to defy orders, I stood by my brothers and refused to execute the new government’s orders. I’m Ukrainian, not Russian, so I don’t want to go to Russia."
Vitali spoke in a firm tone, "I was locked up in prison, there’s nothing in this country that makes me want to stay, but I don’t want to go to Russia either. There’s no good people in the new authorities, but the departed Viktor is not worth my loyalty either. I’ve had enough; I’d rather be a mercenary. At least I know I’d be fighting for myself, and I would get paid."
Sergei added, "That’s right, and to get paid. I’m married, and I have a child. If I can’t stay in Alpha, then I have to find a way to earn money to support my family. I’ve heard that mercenaries make a lot."
Yang Yi nodded, then he turned to Zhang Yong and asked, "What did you tell them about the compensation?"
Zhang Yong shrugged, "You’re the one who decides that."
Yi Yi pondered for a moment and said, "Alright, let’s talk about your compensation. First of all, it cost me a decent amount of money to get each of you out of prison, you’re aware of that. So, during this initial period of joining Trident, each of you can get five thousand US dollars a month, whether or not there’s a fight for you. Besides, you’ll receive extra rewards for every battle fought, the amount depending on the commission for the mission we get. Of course, if any of you perform outstandingly, you’ll certainly get more money."
After finishing, Yang Yi looked at the three men, "Are you satisfied with the compensation?"
Roman nodded, "Very satisfied, there’s nothing to complain about."
Vitali and Sergei also nodded.
Yang Yi said firmly, "Good, we’ve gotten the compensation out of the way. Now we need to talk about some important rules you need to follow. First, when an order is given, you must carry it out unconditionally. I won’t treat you as cannon fodder, nor will I give you impossible orders. But when situations turn dangerous, each of you must shoulder the responsibilities you’re given. Can you accept this?"
"Yes!"
"Good, and another important rule is about confidentiality. Everything you know about Trident, absolutely everything, must not be disclosed, or I will personally kill the traitor. Can you accept that?"
The three men again nodded in unison, "Yes!"
Roman stretched out his hand, "Those are the most basic disciplines, we can and certainly will adhere to them!"
Yang Yi laughed, "Excellent, then welcome to Trident. From now on, you’ll be taking orders from him. He’s an experienced mercenary. Oh, I forgot to introduce myself. You can call me Sea God, and this is Owl, and he is Gambling God."
Zhang Yong coughed lightly and said, "From now on, you’ll follow me. My nickname is Gambling God, though I’m planning to change it. Until I come up with something better, just call me Gambling God."
Roman, puzzled, asked, "Why change it?"
"Because I lose most of the time when I gamble, and I think it’s better not to insult the term ’Gambling God’."
Giving Yang Yi a disgruntled glance, Zhang Yong said sternly, "Anyway, following me won’t do you wrong."
Just then, Anton returned and smilingly said, "You can call me Ghost, just don’t call me Executioner, and definitely don’t call me Mad Dog, although I don’t mind, I still get angry."
Yang Yi laughed heartily, "Okay, now that we’re acquainted, it’s time for you to get used to your new life. We’re heading to our lodging where you can take a hot bath and change into some fresh clothes. Also... sorry, I need to take a call."
The phone rang and Yang Yi walked aside to answer it. Then he heard Terry say in a grave tone, "We’ve found the whereabouts of the gold. If you’re interested in taking on this mission, we should meet sooner rather than later."
Yang Yi looked at his watch, "I can be back at the hotel in about half an hour."
"Then I’ll see you in half an hour."
The cleaners work fast, Yang Yi thought, he hadn’t even finished recruiting his team, and they’d already located the gold.
After a heavy sigh, Yang Yi said to the group, "I may soon take on a big job, so we’ll have to move quickly."
