Chapter 484: Chapter 472 Uncontrollable
Speaking of which, Yang Yi, Zhang Yong, and Brian were all cellmates.
But the so-called Security Bureau Prison was just a secret detention facility, unlike Pelican Bay Prison, which housed thousands. When Yang Yi was brought into the so-called prison by Karinichenko, his first reaction was, "This counts as a prison?"
It was just a small area with not a large floor space. The facilities inside were quite outdated—no iron bars, no numbered cells, only small cabins each fitted with an iron door.
The political situation in Ukraine had been completely overturned, so naturally, the Ukrainian Security Bureau couldn’t avoid a major internal purge; hence, the prison was essentially full.
To put it bluntly, the Ukrainian National Security Bureau’s prison was a black site, definitely not listed within the Ukrainian judicial system’s records. The prisoners held here were either captured spies or internal personnel of the Security Bureau.
Yang Yi never knew Karinichenko’s true identity, but given that he could come and go in the Security Bureau Prison as he pleased, this man was either holding a high position within the bureau or he was a puppet for some bigshot. Regardless, he definitely had ways to get people out of prison.
There was a small window on the iron door that could be opened. Karinichenko stopped in front of a door, then he opened its small window, gesturing for Yang Yi and the others to look inside.
Yang Yi glanced inside; the cell contained only a bed, on which a very young-looking man sat dejectedly, his head hung low. He still wore army boots on his feet, camo pants on his legs, but only a vest on his torso.
Upon hearing the sound of the window being opened, the young man trapped in the cell suddenly shouted, "Let me out! Damn it, you shameless parasites—I’ll slaughter you, let me out!"
Yang Yi quickly shut the small window and shook his head, "No way."
Karinichenko was expressionless. He led Yang Yi to the next iron door and whispered, "The person inside is an officer, a lieutenant from Alpha Group. He refused to follow orders from his superiors and showed tendencies of defection, so..."
Yang Yi asked in surprise, "Defection?"
Karinichenko shrugged and whispered, "He was a captain in the Signal Flag Unit; he incited his subordinates, aiming to take his team to Russia. Then he was captured, but this man is very capable."
Brian suddenly said, "Don’t bother with him, next one, please."
Zhang Yong also nodded, "Right, we don’t need to see any more of this one, let’s not waste time."
Russia has the Signal Flag Unit and Alpha Group, and so does Ukraine, as the military construction models of Russia and Ukraine carry on the legacy of the Soviet Union.
The most elite special forces of Ukraine are Signal Flag and Alpha. Just like Russia, these two Ukrainian special force units belong to the security department, not the military, and their tasks include domestic counter-terrorism such as anti-hijacking and hostage rescue. They are also adept at street and indoor combat.
So, whether it’s Ukraine’s Signal Flag or Alpha, the personnel of these two units are quite suitable for the Organization of Water.
But Yang Yi, Brian, and Zhang Yong all thought the same—that a person who’s eager to run to Russia was not worth considering. A person with such aspirations and beliefs is unpredictable once out of prison; he might just run off to Russia anyway.
Karinichenko didn’t say much more. He continued walking, then pointed to four cells and whispered, "The situation in eastern Ukraine is unstable now. The Russian-speaking faction is plotting an insurrection. The security department issued orders for Alpha Group to carry out missions, but one of the Alpha squads refused. Now, everyone from that squad is here—the officers are isolated, and these soldiers are locked up in four cells. We’re running out of room."
This wasn’t a regular prison, so under normal circumstances, the inmates all enjoyed the luxury of solitary cells. But now, there clearly weren’t enough cells to go around.
Karinichenko opened the small window, and Yang Yi took a look inside.
The cell contained three individuals: one sitting on the bed, and two on the floor, all displaying a rather dejected demeanor. Upon hearing the noise, they merely glanced towards the iron door.
Yang Yi stepped away from the window, allowing Brian to peer inside, after which he sidestepped. Zhang Yong then looked in briefly and, after observing for a moment, quickly closed the little window.
"They’re alright, what do you think?"
Zhang Yong felt the inmates were satisfactory, but after a moment of contemplation, Brian looked up at Karinichenko and whispered, "What language are they speaking?"
"Ukrainian and Russian, but mainly Russian. They are Russians."
Brian mused for a moment and said gravely, "Let’s take another look."
Yang Yi checked four cells in turn, each holding three individuals. After inspecting all four cells, he looked towards Brian.
Brian shook his head slightly, while Zhang Yong gave a subtle nod.
Brian turned to Zhang Yong and murmured, "Too young."
Zhang Yong replied quietly, "They’re a bit young, but that’s not a problem."
Brian looked at Karinichenko and asked in a low voice, "How will these men be dealt with?"
Karinichenko responded softly, "It’s unlikely they will be executed; they will surely be released, but also will be expelled from the military."
Brian turned to Zhang Yong again and said quietly, "They’re not at a dead end yet, and since they are confined together, they know their fate won’t be too harsh. Such men are difficult to control. Moreover, they’re not at the age to worry about their families. Unless they’re only going to be used as mercenaries, it’s better to pass on them."
Zhang Yong spoke softly, "I am selecting them with a mercenary’s perspective. Alpha Group is good, but..."
After some thought, Zhang Yong still shook his head, "Forget it, recruiting a small team might give us strong combatants, but they’d be impossible to manage. Better to drop the idea."
Yang Yi turned to Karinichenko and said in a hushed tone, "Are there any who are certain to die? I’d like to see those who will definitely be cleaned out, and who know what fate they face."
Karinichenko frowned slightly and replied softly, "There are those who are bound to die and know it, but..."
Hesitating for a moment, Karinichenko pointed towards a cell door, "Are we not considering the people in here?"
Yang Yi whispered, "We can effectively rule them out."
With a sigh, Karinichenko said, "Come this way."
He led Yang Yi and the others through numerous cell doors without stopping, passing through a large gate, until Karinichenko whispered, "Here we enter the serious offender section, where virtually no one leaves alive. There aren’t many of them, and most aren’t from the front-line combat units, but there are still some here who meet your criteria."
