Chapter 470: Chapter 458: Right Now
First came a stomach full of confusion, but in an instant, it turned into a chest full of rage, along with fear.
The plane, that plane must not be allowed to leave!
A tremendous sense of fear made Roy reach out and grab the right-hand man Arseny sent.
But after Roy, out of instinct, yelled out the only remedial measures he could think of, Arseny’s right-hand man went from full-faced confusion to anger.
"Shoot it down? How am I supposed to tell the ground-to-air missile troops to shoot down a civilian airliner? How am I supposed to get the air force to scramble fighter jets to force down a civilian airliner?"
Arseny had just become Prime Minister; he couldn’t yet do whatever he wanted, and most importantly, he still hadn’t gained control of the military. As Arseny’s right-hand man, without any official public duties, what authority did he have to order the military around, let alone whether they would be willing to listen to his orders.
"Stop the car!"
Roy shouted, then he said loudly into the walkie-talkie: "Stop the cars, stop them all!"
Cupping his hand over his mouth, Roy pondered for a moment and then said to the person beside him: "Tell the control tower to make the plane land. I’ve given it some serious thought; the plane that just arrived shouldn’t have any problem. Therefore, the problem must be with this new plane, or perhaps my boss has taken some measures to mislead others. Alright, now let’s go back and see."
Arseny’s right-hand man’s face turned the color of iron, and he said in a deep voice: "The Gold has already been handed over to you, and you have already loaded the Gold onto the plane. I will comply with all your demands, but remember, the Gold transaction is clear. You just need to make sure your boss follows through with the promise to bring the money. Now, I need to call my own boss to explain the situation here."
The cars came to a halt, but Roy didn’t instruct the convoy to turn back to their previous position. He said gravely: "I need to make a call to find out what’s going on."
Roy got out of the car, took a few quick steps to the side of the vehicle, and then dialed a phone number.
The call connected quickly, which sent a chill through Roy’s heart.
"Has the plane arrived?"
Roy spoke in a very steady tone: "It has arrived. I want to ask, will you be coming to Ukraine personally?"
The boss’s tone had a hint of surprise: "How could I possibly go to Ukraine?"
Roy spoke softly: "I just thought that with the Gold being so valuable, you might want to come in person, so I needed to warn you that it’s very dangerous here."
"Of course, I won’t go to Ukraine. Hand the Gold over to Jack. The Gold is ready, right?"
"Everything’s ready."
"Good, call me when Jack takes off again. That’s all."
The call ended, leaving Roy with a cold feeling in his heart.
He’d been deceived by a Boeing 747; Roy could no longer afford to be angry, his only thought was where the leak had come from.
It had to be Arseny, it could only be Arseny, so this was a plot by Arseny, just that he himself had become the scapegoat.
Roy was very certain in his deductions, but there was still a glimmer of hope in his heart.
With a light sigh, Roy dialed another number.
"Hello, my dear, it’s me. Listen to me, no matter what you’re doing right now, drop everything, don’t take anything with you, don’t worry about anything, just take the bag I gave you. It contains your and the child’s documents and money. Go to the airport right now, buy any ticket you can get, no matter where it goes, the farther the better. Leave the country as soon as you land, anywhere will do, but you must be quick!"
"What’s happened? What’s going on?"
Roy, somewhat annoyed, said sternly, "There’s no time to explain now. If you don’t want to die, and you don’t want our child to be killed, just do as I tell you. Remember, forget everything you have now—phone, documents, bank cards—get rid of them all, just take the bag I’ve prepared for you. It has everything you need. You know what to do, right? I’ve told you before. Listen, if you want to live, do what I’ve taught you, or else you and the child will die. I’ll contact you, don’t call me."
Roy hung up the phone because he really had no time left.
Roy wasn’t married, but he had a girlfriend, and they had a child together. He loved his child, and even though he couldn’t see the child often, this child was the most important factor in the decision he was now making.
If he had indeed been deceived, then everything was irretrievable. Whether it was Arseny’s doing or someone had deceived him with a Boeing 747, everything was beyond recovery. Even if that airplane were brought down or if the air force forced it to land at some airport, Roy’s fate was sealed.
He was doomed. Death was the only outcome.
But there was still a glimmer of hope in Roy’s heart. He believed that his partners couldn’t be bought or coerced. Since they had signaled to him that it was safe to move the gold, there shouldn’t be any problems.
So Roy had to stay and see what was up with this new Boeing 747. Maybe things weren’t as bad as he thought, maybe this plane really had some other purpose, and the gold had been sent to the right plane after all.
Roy stood for ten minutes, and then a United Airlines Boeing 747 landed on the runway.
Watching the plane land, Roy returned to the car, opened the door, and said to Arseny with a relaxed face, "There are no problems after all. That really gave me a scare. My colleague is here to do something, it has nothing to do with the gold. You can leave now, I’ll stay to sort things out and then I’ll be off."
Arseny’s right-hand man also seemed relieved and said, "You made me very nervous."
Roy smiled, closed the car door, then took his walkie-talkie and shouted, "Everyone clear out of the airport."
Leaving a car behind, Roy himself drove to the end of the airport runway, watching as the plane landed, then people began to disembark from it.
"Hey, Roy, where’s the stuff? Why are you here alone?"
It was Jack, the guy who was supposed to take the gold.
Roy’s heart sank completely as he approached Jack with a serious face and said in a low voice, "There’s been a slight problem."
"What problem?"
"I have the gold in my possession, but I suspect there’s been a leak. There might be some bad faith on Arseny’s part, so I used a little ruse. I brought a fake convoy here because I was worried we’d be ambushed on the way."
"Did it work?"
"I issued a warning to Arseny; the decoy encountered no danger, everything went smoothly, and now the real gold is on its way, but you’ll have to wait another two hours."
"Safety first."
Roy checked his watch, and then he whispered, "Sorry, but now you’ll have to wait here for a bit. I’ll be back in no more than two hours. Right now, I need to personally watch over the convoy."
All hope was lost for Roy; he knew he was finished. Whatever he did, whether or not he could recover the gold, he was a dead man. The boss would never let him off.
So Roy decided to flee, right now.
