Chapter 452: Chapter 440: Fierce and Cruel
This was a battle that ended before it began.
The moment the directional mine exploded, Yang Yi knew they were in big trouble, no longer could they simply muddle through by taking opportunistic shortcuts; now, everyone, anyone, was on the verge of extreme danger.
Landmines are an infantry’s nightmare, and a directional mine is that nightmare made real, especially the remote-controlled or manually-controlled ones, which are absolutely lethal.
This was a war between two arms dealers.
What do arms dealers have in abundance? Weapons, of course.
This is Ukraine, the warehouse of the world’s largest arms dealer.
Jethro had already prepared for failure, and Yang Yi was ready to make a quick escape, but the enemy had set up an unknown number of directional mines outside the exterior wall; with just this move, the enemy had already secured an invincible position.
Moreover, the enemy’s position advantage from shooting from the rooftops allowed them to utilize their firepower to the greatest extent.
"Retreat! Retreat quickly!"
Jethro yelled loudly into his walkie-talkie. In fact, without his command, the two mercenary groups in the front were already pulling back.
Shooting from below upward was uncomfortable in any stance; lying prone on the ground, they couldn’t shoot the enemies on the rooftops, and kneeling to shoot was the only option.
The two mercenary groups upfront were trying their best to suppress the enemy; there was no need to tend to comrades within the range of the directional mines’ explosion—they were doomed. The only thing they could do now was to suppress the enemy and then run, saving whoever they could.
Trident didn’t fire a single shot, and the enemy, after their initial sudden concentrated fire, had now switched to the tactic of occasionally poking their heads out to take a shot, because they had no need to foolishly expose half their bodies for an exchange of fire.
Rocket launchers began firing one after another at the ground; this was not a fight, it was a massacre.
Jethro turned around and said to Yang Yi in a low voice, "Don’t shoot, let’s run for it!"
Yang Yi was momentarily stunned as he felt his duty was to cover the retreat of the allies in front.
Trident was in the furthest rearmost position, their field of fire was broader than that of the people in the two mercenary groups in front of them, and comparatively speaking, they were also somewhat safer. Normally, they would be expected to cover the retreat of the allies in front.
If they didn’t fire, then even if Trident were to be discovered by the enemy, their threat level would definitely be the smallest, and hence the enemy would choose to deal with more dangerous targets first, allowing Trident a possible safe escape.
If Yang Yi and his group demonstrated exceptional marksmanship, taking out the enemy one by one with precise shots, then the enemy would certainly combine all their firepower to deal with them.
The Turiav Mercenary Corps and Falcon Mercenary Corps had already started to retreat while firing; the enemy showed no signs of pursuit.
Now, what mattered more, taking a risk to cover the allies or looking out for themselves first?
Jethro had already given Yang Yi the answer, which was to forget everything else and make a run for it quickly.
But Yang Yi couldn’t do it; he watched as his comrades fell one by one, heard the desperate cries ringing out, and he truly couldn’t just run away like that.
"Every man for himself, run if you don’t want to die!"
Zhang Yong bellowed, and right at that moment, a succession of explosions began in front of them, one after another without pause!
Amidst the explosions, the terrified shouts of Zhang Yong could still be heard through the earphones.
"Damn it, cornflowers! The Russians are ruthless! Run! Run!"
There was no time for tactics now, just one word, run!
Yang Yi put away his gun, stood up, and sprinted away.
Cruel, too cruel.
The enemy has directional mines, they have machine guns, they have rocket launchers, and they also have "Cornflower."
What is "Cornflower"? It’s the 2B9 82mm automatic rapid-firing mortar that can fire four rounds in 1.5 seconds.
The recent barrage lasted only a few seconds but at least dozens of shells fell, the explosions were so dense that it was impossible to count how many had landed.
Of course, the "Cornflower" mortar had a stunning rate of fire, but its accuracy left much to be desired. However, once the quantity compensated for the lack of precision, Yang Yi doubted whether any of the friendly forces in front of him could survive.
What’s called war, this is war.
Yang Yi’s prior engagement was merely shooting guns and tossing grenades. Now, lo and behold, he was facing enemies with directional mines and mortars.
This Ukraine cannot be stayed in.
Carrying his rifle, Yang Yi had only one thought as he ran back: Goodbye Ukraine, to hell with this damned place.
While running, Yang Yi had to stay vigilant in case anyone got hit, and then he saw Rodriguez suddenly fall forward to the ground.
Yang Yi felt like his heart was about to burst out, but as he diagonally ran towards Rodriguez, he discovered that Rodriguez had gotten up faster than he had fallen and was running forward even faster than before.
A frenzied sprint for life, until the people of Trident all leaped into a ditch.
Gasping like a bellows, Yang Yi asked intermittently, "Is everyone here? Is everyone alright!"
"Ha... ha... ha... Are we... safe... now?"
Jethro was still by Yang Yi’s side. As he gasped for air with his mouth wide open, he took a difficult breath and said loudly, "Who...who check..."
Brian quickly climbed to the top of the ditch to look around, then immediately slipped back down, panting heavily, "It’s over, nobody can come back now, fuck!"
The sound of explosions rose again, like firecrackers, creating a succession of noises that made it impossible to distinguish a single explosion.
And the explosions were rapidly closing in on Yang Yi and his comrades; needless to say, the enemy was extending their fire.
Fortunately, the explosive noises came abruptly and left just as quickly; after just a few seconds, they stopped again.
"They have someone directing and adjusting their fire, run, run, run!"
Zhang Yong screamed again, and then the eight men of Trident, along with Jethro, scrambled out of the ditch and continued to run for their lives. However, they hadn’t gone far when Brian shouted, "Get down!"
Yang Yi immediately lay flat on the ground, and after waiting ten seconds, the explosions started again, the closest no more than fifty meters away.
Zhang Yong yelled, "Run! It’s not as quick as you think! You’ve got twenty-five seconds!"
Brian calculated the time based on the ammo-changing speed of the most elite forces he knew, while Zhang Yong based his estimate on the time it took regular soldiers to change ammo.
This was the advantage of having veterans around; at least they knew how to escape.
The nine men, some ahead and some behind, kept running until Zhang Yong shouted, "Get down!"
After getting down for a few seconds and the explosions starting again, Zhang Yong screamed out, "Six mortars! Run fast!"
Another frenzied sprint followed, until they had crossed the road and took cover on the other side of the embankment. Although still unable to escape the threat of the mortars, Yang Yi and his team could finally get out of sight of the enemy.
