Chapter 450: Chapter 438 Who Takes the Lead
Jethro’s words made Yang Yi feel even more remorseful.
Yang Yi tried hard to reduce and eventually erase his feelings of guilt, but no matter how he reasoned with himself, the remorse lingered.
Being an undercover wasn’t easy. If he had encountered a harsh person or someone with deep hatred, betrayal would have come easily to him, but with a boss like Jethro, betrayal weighed uncomfortably on his conscience, making it difficult to act against him.
Finally, Yang Yi sighed inwardly and then decided that he would end this mission as soon as the time came.
Brian was sitting in the back. He was usually the last person to interrupt, but suddenly he said, "The new guy, is he your boss’s son?"
Jethro nodded subtly and whispered, "Yes."
"Since he’s the big boss’s son, it shouldn’t be too dangerous, right? If it was very dangerous, how could the boss bear to let his son come here?"
Although it was pitch-black in the car and nothing could be seen, Jethro still turned to look in the direction of Brian, then said in a low voice, "How could he be in danger? The danger is ours. He’s just here to claim the credit to lay the groundwork for taking over in the future. Even if we all die, they’ll just bring in another group to replace us. But how could the boss’s son be in danger?"
"Right, why would the chairman’s successor throw himself into the fray?"
Jethro murmured, "I would actually prefer it if they left all this dangerous work to us while they enjoy the sun on France’s beaches in the summer and go skiing in Switzerland in the winter, just enjoying life instead of causing us trouble."
After saying that, Jethro couldn’t help but speak with a tone of resentment, "I’ve slaved away here for half a year, paid the price in blood, and many of my brothers who have been with me for years are almost all gone, and yet..."
With a resentful twist of his head to look out of the window, Jethro sighed deeply again and then whispered, "Gentlemen, do me a favor, please don’t disclose today’s conversation to anyone, or I think I might end up dead..."
Something in Yang Yi’s heart was touched, he was silent for a moment, and then whispered, "Rest assured, I will not tell anyone these words, I promise."
Jethro didn’t say anything more, and Yang Yi did not speak again, only Brian let out a soft sigh from the back seat.
The car continued on its way until the one upfront slowed down and finally stopped.
Suddenly, Jethro said, "Tonight’s operation was rushed because of the intelligence, but I have very low expectations for it, so you must stick with me no matter what the boss says. Remember, you need to live to be able to spend the money you earn!"
After he finished speaking, Jethro pushed the car door open, got out, and walked straight ahead, while the young man who wouldn’t even give his name, and only let people refer to him as ’boss’, had already gotten out of the car.
Yang Yi softly said into the walkie-talkie, "Get out of the car, let’s gather first, over."
Zhang Yong said over the walkie-talkie, "We should carry heavy weapons. In addition to the sniper, everyone should try to bring a rocket launcher, over."
Yang Yi immediately spoke out urgently, "No! Don’t bring any heavy weapons, listen to me, over."
Trident only had eight people, and they quickly assembled. Once everyone had gathered around Yang Yi, he spoke in a low voice, "Tonight’s operation prioritizes survival. We will not be cannon fodder and should not bring heavy weapons. If we do, they’ll expect us to lead the charge..."
Zhang Yong asked quietly, "Is there a situation?"
Yang Yi gave a bitter smile and replied softly, "There is a situation. We’re being set up to be cannon fodder, so if things go south, we retreat. Got it?"
Mercenaries don’t fight losing battles, especially missions that are certain death, because they fight to make money, not to lose their lives. Only when they have no choice but to fight to the death do mercenaries truly risk everything. But if there’s a chance to retreat, they certainly will, and they’ll definitely surrender if possible.
What Yang Yi had to do was to prevent Trident from reaching the point where they had to fight desperately.
Turiav Mercenary Corps and Falcon Mercenary Corps had finished assembling, but mercenaries can’t possibly be arranged into a squad for inspection, so both groups were loosely-standing in two clusters.
The eight members of Trident joined the troop without drawing attention to their smaller numbers, but their equipment differed significantly from the other two mercenary groups, demanding a second look.
Jethro stood with Deyo’s son, whispering, "Deyo, we now have a total of one hundred and nineteen people, plus those you brought..."
Yang Yi was surprised that the young man was called Deyo because he was the son of Deyo Marcel. As Jethro spoke, however, the young Deyo raised his hand, stopping Jethro from continuing.
Taking a step forward, the man known as Deyo spoke haughtily, "I am Deyo Marcel II. See that building over there? There are about forty people inside. With your skills, it should be easy to take them down—of course, it won’t be too simple. So, for tonight’s fight, it’s ten thousand US dollars per person. Additionally, if you take down the target, I have a bonus waiting for you!"
Deyo Marcel II tilted his head, and someone behind him immediately opened the door of a van, revealing bags inside. After unzipping one of the bags, there it was—greenbacks.
Pointing at the cash, Deyo Marcel II spoke gravely, "Five million US dollars in total! It’s all yours if you succeed—everyone gets a share. If you fail..."
Spreading his hands, Deyo Marcel II raised his voice and said, "Enough talk. The targets are inside. It’s up to you now. I’ll wait here for the good news."
It was clear Deyo II’s men wouldn’t lift a finger, but after exchanging a glance and nodding to each other, the leaders of Turiav and Falcon, Mariano, turned to Yang Yi. Then Turiav, with a thick Russian accent, said in English, "Trident, are you in?"
Yang Yi nodded.
At that moment, Jethro, with a serious expression, said, "Deyo, I’ll take them up."
Deyo II nodded slowly, replying, "Of course."
Jethro donned a bulletproof vest, slipped on a helmet, and with one hand picked up a rifle before saying in a deep voice, "Turiav’s men on the left, Falcon’s men on the right, with Trident in the middle. We’ll approach the building covertly at first, then decide how to attack based on the situation. Gentlemen, any objections?"
After exchanging a glance, Turiav and Mariano turned to each other and Turiav asked in a serious tone, "Who goes first?"
Three groups of mercenaries, all mercenaries—who will lead the charge?
