Chapter 447: Chapter 435 Can’t Leave
Everything was as usual.
The recorded conversation between Jethro and Arseny was sent to Justin, but this time Yang Yi received no payment, mainly because the recording contained nothing substantive.
However, from the intercepted conversation, it was evident that Arseny had firmly secured the position he desired.
On February 26, the Ukrainian parliament announced Arseny’s appointment as the Prime Minister of Ukraine.
On February 27, Arseny formally took office, and it was on this day that the identities of Yang Yi and his team changed.
While they were still at breakfast, Jethro suddenly said to Yang Yi, "You don’t have to follow me today."
Yang Yi lifted his head and looked at Jethro. "Oh, is that so?"
"Someone is coming to take over your duties, they will arrive today. You no longer need to protect me, just resume your previous work. As for the commission, it will revert to the previous rate. Boyata will settle your commission for this period clearly, but I’m out of cash, so you’ll have to accept a transfer."
Jethro’s expression was calm, but Yang Yi felt that perhaps Jethro did not plan to change his security detail, so the newcomers were likely not Jethro’s men, but sent by Deyo.
The Trident Mercenary Group was not Jethro’s close confidant, but they would definitely obey any of Jethro’s commands. If the new arrivals were sent by Deyo, it wouldn’t matter if they weren’t Jethro’s confidants. Worse still, they might even hinder Jethro’s affairs.
Everything was speculation, and Jethro would not disclose what exactly had happened.
After breakfast, Yang Yi said in a deep voice, "Where should we stay then?"
Jethro pointed behind him and said, "You will stay in the same house as before, it’s been kept vacant. There are two cars in the yard for you to use."
With nothing more to say, Yang Yi and his team packed up and moved back to their previous residence.
Not being Jethro’s bodyguard meant fewer opportunities, but Yang Yi actually felt much more relaxed. When he called Justin to report the situation, he casually asked a question he had always wanted to know.
"Buddy, what kind of person is Jethro really?"
"What kind of person is Jethro? How can I put it, should I say he is a good man? Uh, Jethro is a very capable person. He has been working for Deyo for many years now, you know Deyo doesn’t show up at all these days, everything is handled by a few of his subordinates, and Jethro is one of them. Why do you ask?"
Yang Yi laughed, "Nothing much, I just think Jethro is very interesting. He seems to trust us completely. It was too relaxing being with him, we didn’t have to worry about anything. Doesn’t he fear someone might investigate him? After all, he is an arms dealer."
Justin said proudly, "He doesn’t trust you, he trusts me, because he believes that the mercenary group I recommend would never be a mole sent by some country to investigate him, get it?"
Justin’s name was a gold standard. Jethro, trusting Justin, had not taken any necessary precautions against Trident. Of course, he had no way to guard against anything, but Yang Yi thought it was quite fortunate that Jethro trusted an information broker so much and was still alive till today.
Yang Yi chuckled, "Okay, I see, oh, Jethro seems pretty concerned about the fate of Ukraine."
"Of course, because Jethro is Ukrainian."
"Ukrainian? He is Ukrainian?"
"Yes, Jethro is Ukrainian. He went to the Netherlands in ’92, and then I don’t know how he started working for Deyo, but he is indeed Ukrainian. The reason Deyo sent him here is not only because he is capable but also because it’s important that he is Ukrainian."
Yang Yi let out a long sigh and said with a smile, "Well, no wonder it’s like this. He’s actually Ukrainian. I guess it must feel helpless watching his own country slide into the abyss step by step. Oh, another question, someone is pushing hard for a civil war in Ukraine, do you know who it is?"
Justin chuckled, "Buddy, that question is over the line. This is high-value intelligence, so why do you want to know all this? If you want an answer, you’ve got to pay."
"I was just curious, but if it costs money then forget it."
"In four more days, you guys will need to renew your contracts. So, are you going to keep working for Jethro?"
Yang Yi thought about it and said, "I’ll see how it goes. If nothing unexpected happens, I’ll renew the contract. After all, I get paid every day, and it’s not bad continuing to work for him."
After hanging up the phone, Yang Yi strolled into the living room and announced loudly, "Come on, play a few rounds, I’ll deal, but as the croupier, I’m taking a cut."
Without having to continue protecting Jethro, there was a lot less to do. With time on their hands, they started gambling, just to kill time with small stakes.
The life of a mercenary is actually quite boring. Apart from the extreme excitement during combat, most of the time, they can only sulk at the base, so when a card game was mentioned, everyone except Paul, who was on guard outside, joined in the gambling.
Zhang Yong was delighted this time because he was incredibly lucky.
"I’ve got three Kings!"
No matter what others bet, Zhang Yong always went all in. Though he had his losses, he won more often, so his mouth was practically never closed from smiling.
Zhang Yong pulled out a few hundred-dollar bills, not even looking to see how many, and carelessly threw them to Yang Yi, boasting, "Here, take this, it’s for you."
Yang Yi happily pocketed the money, but at this moment, Xiao Ran loudly said, "Let’s not play Texas Hold’em anymore. Let’s play something else, like Omaha or 21."
Zhang Yong laughed heartily and said, "Afraid I’ll win? Come on then."
Zhang Yong glanced at Yang Yi, and his eyes held a meaningful look.
Yang Yi was somewhat conflicted. He didn’t know whether he should tell Zhang Yong the truth, which was that he hadn’t been dealing him good hands at all. Zhang Yong’s wins today were purely down to luck.
After switching to 21, Zhang Yong continued his spree, beating everyone until their faces looked ashen.
Honestly, Zhang Yong was just lucky in getting good cards. Even when he had 18 or 19, he dared to ask for more cards, and somehow, he would always end up with 21.
While the gambling was at its peak, Paul suddenly said over the walkie-talkie, "Jethro is coming over. It’s just him and Boyata!"
Everyone was stunned for a moment, then Yang Yi said in a low voice, "Never mind him, keep playing."
Jethro entered the house quickly, and when he saw that Yang Yi and the others were playing cards, he remarked nonchalantly, "I see you’re playing cards, good. Mind if I join in for a few hands?"
Zhang Yong laughed and said, "Of course you can, as long as you’re not afraid of losing."
Jethro sat down and then said indifferently, "I’m never afraid of losing."
Yang Yi dealt a hand to Jethro, then he smiled and said, "Why have you come here in person? If there was something, you could’ve just called us over."
Jethro smiled and then said in a deep voice, "As of today, I’ll be living here. Buddies, we’re back together again."
