Chapter 438: Chapter 426: The 25th Kid
Jethro was there to negotiate with Arseny, not to take him out, so Yang Yi was rather considerate to Arseny’s bodyguards, allowing them to keep sitting in their chairs instead of squatting or lying on the ground.
After waiting for over an hour, Jethro came down from upstairs. He waved his hand and said, "Let’s go."
Arseny followed behind Jethro, then he said with a serious face, "Let them go."
Yang Yi and his companions walked out of Arseny’s home in a relaxed and cheerful mood.
Back in the car, Jethro let out a long breath, then waved his hand and said, "Home."
Yang Yi didn’t ask any questions. He started the car and retraced the route they had come on. On the way back, Jethro wasn’t in the mood for talking; he was deep in thought.
Once they reached their base, Jethro said gravely, "Go to bed early tonight. You don’t need to worry about security here. I wish you all a good night’s sleep."
After a few hurried words, Jethro went back to his room, and his assistant Boya stretched out his hand and said, "Gentlemen, this is where you’ll be staying."
Yang Yi and the others were assigned four rooms, and soon after Yang Yi entered his room, Kate quickly came in.
Kate handed over a memory card to Yang Yi. He took out his phone, inserted the memory card, put on his earphones, and began to play the recording saved on the card.
The entire conversation between Jethro and Arseny was recorded - it was very clear. When Yang Yi said over the walkie-talkie to report any unusual activity immediately and for everyone to be careful, it was a sign for Kate that he had placed a listening device.
Trident might not be the most powerful mercenary group, nor Organization of Water the most formidable spy organization, but Trident might well be the most professional spy among mercenaries, and the toughest mercenary among spies. This is called having a competitive advantage.
Yang Yi began to listen to the recording.
"Hello, Mr. Pavlovich, I’m sorry for meeting you in this manner, but if you had agreed to see me earlier, this wouldn’t have been necessary."
"Who exactly are you?"
"It doesn’t matter who I am, Mr. Pavlovich. I am here to propose a business deal to you, a big deal."
"I’m not interested in business. I’m not a businessman, and I don’t know who you are."
Jethro broke into laughter, then said solemnly, "Mr. Pavlovich, please don’t reject my olive branch. I’m a blunt man, not skilled in insincere diplomatic talk, so let’s get straight to the point. First, I am an arms dealer. My boss is Deyo Marcel. I don’t know if you’ve heard this name before."
There was no sound; Arseny must have shaken his head, because Jethro immediately said, "Not knowing him is fine, all you need to know is that Mr. Marcel is the biggest arms dealer, and he has good relations with the United States and many other countries. So, I think you will become very good friends too."
"I don’t think so."
"Don’t be in a rush to refuse the olive branch extended to you, Mr. Pavlovich. At least you should hear what this deal is about."
"Alright, go ahead."
"The situation in Ukraine is chaotic right now, and I think you have a great chance to obtain the highest power. So, some matters should be discussed now, it’s always better to be early than late, Mr. Pavlovich. I hope that once you gain the power of this country, you could open up the armory to us. We will turn the contents of the armory into cash, and a significant portion of it will appear on your desk."
"Everything I do now is for this country, to make it better! I will not exchange the interests of this country to satisfy my personal desires."
Jethro burst into laughter, a long laugh, and after a while, he said in a jesting tone, "Mr. Pavlovich, why do you think I’ve chosen to seek you out? Is it because you are one of the leaders of this fair ruler movement? No, Mr. Pavlovich. I’m here because I’m aware of the deal you have with the United States, the Americans are behind you, your funds are provided by the United States. You’ve taken the money, and what’s more important is that you’ve been designated as the new core of Ukraine. Don’t deny it, I wouldn’t have come to you without reliable information. Please understand one thing, we are not enemies. The current government is, because they are friends with our competitors, and thus naturally, they are our enemies."
Arseny remained silent again, and Jethro said sternly, "Ukraine has stored a lot of worthless armaments. Hand them over to us, you don’t need to do anything, just cooperate a little, and then a lot of money will regularly appear in your account."
"You should be discussing this with the military."
"You really should learn about Deyo Marcel, Mr. Pavlovich. Let me be more direct. I believe you will soon have the highest power in this country, and afterward, you just need to sign an order, transfer a few officers, those not too high-ranking, and position a few of our designated officers. I don’t think the military will refuse; when the time comes, they won’t have the right to refuse your orders. You can leave the rest to us, we’ll handle the high-ranking military officials, and then you can just wait to collect the money. How about five million US dollars a year?"
"I can’t do anything now."
"I’m not asking you to do it now. We can wait, and we won’t have to wait too long, right?"
Arseny was still silent, and Jethro said sternly, "Maybe you should contact your friend from the CIA; he will give you the right advice."
"I have no relation with the CIA, nor do I know any CIA people."
Jethro just laughed. A moment later, Arseny said in a low voice, "Then, five million US dollars a month."
"That’s incorrect, Mr. Pavlovich. Bargaining is expected, but one shouldn’t go too far. Here’s a suggestion, ten million US dollars a year, with the additional condition that you don’t reject my calls, and when I need to meet with you, I hope you can make time. Also, I want to say that the arms trade isn’t as profitable as you think. There isn’t much conflict right now, and the business is tough."
"Pay monthly, two million a month..."
The rest was just haggling and discussing how to work together, which was not very valuable. After quietly listening to the entire recording, Yang Yi nodded to Kate.
Kate left quietly, and Yang Yi sat on the bed with his phone, feeling somewhat unsettled.
Zhang Yong entered the room, as he would share it with Yang Yi. Seeing Yang Yi’s expression, he approached and whispered, "What’s wrong, does being a double agent not feel so good?"
Yang Yi exhaled and said quietly, "Double agent? Can we not make it sound so unpleasant?"
"Then what, a traitor?"
Yang Yi gave Zhang Yong a look and said softly, "Undercover! Call it undercover!"
