Chapter 429: Chapter 417 Dangerous Moves
Jethro had arranged the meeting in an old building on the outskirts, which looked dilapidated from afar, seemingly abandoned. It was unclear why Jethro would choose such a place for the meeting.
Being completely unfamiliar with the terrain was particularly frustrating. Although Yang Yi wasn’t a professional when it came to his sideline as a mercenary, under the influence of Brian, Zhang Yong, and Alexander, he at least understood the critical importance of knowing the topography of the operational area, which could even be a matter of life and death.
If a fight actually broke out, not knowing the surrounding terrain would naturally be a huge disadvantage. It wouldn’t be too bad if neither side understood the terrain, but if the enemy were locals with a thorough knowledge of the area, that would leave them just hoping for luck.
However, there was no helping it, Jethro hadn’t informed Yang Yi and the others where they would be going in advance. In fact, Jethro kept it a strict secret, given that the Trident Mercenary Group wasn’t exactly Jethro’s trusted confidants, and not even the most basic trust had been established yet.
Because of this, Yang Yi felt that the likelihood of encountering danger on this outing was slim to none. Jethro had his own calculations; if he felt unsafe, he would not bring Trident along to protect him, even if he hadn’t brought many people with him.
The car approached the building, and as the distance closed to just a few hundred meters, Jethro spoke through the walkie-talkie.
"Stop the car ahead, I need to contact the other party. Guys, be ready, but do not fire without my command. If someone from the other side shoots, then fuck everything else, hit them!"
After instructing everyone through the walkie-talkie, Jethro went silent, presumably to make contact with the person he was meeting. Soon after, he spoke again through the walkie-talkie, "Keep moving."
The convoy started up again. When they were just over two hundred meters from the building, Jethro instructed over the walkie-talkie, "Alright, stop here!"
All four cars came to a halt, and shortly after, Jethro said in a grave tone, "I will go to negotiate. Lachie, you and your men stay here, you don’t need to come over with me."
Yang Yi could see three people standing under the abandoned building, all in camouflage, likely military personnel. He lifted his binoculars for a glance and said, "They are from the Ukrainian military."
Jethro’s car continued forward, but the other three stopped.
Yang Yi spoke in a low voice, "Owl, you take command. What should we do?"
Brian replied with a grave voice, "Get out of the car, spread out, survey the surroundings, focus on the boss, and then wait for the negotiation to end and go home. Also, Iron Fist and Queen stay in the car, move back a hundred meters for backup."
Xiao Ran, quite dissatisfied, complained, "I’m the backup again, alright then!"
Before Brian could lose his temper, Xiao Ran promptly shut up and obediently boarded Kate’s car. Kate drove back about a hundred meters and, under Xiao Ran’s direction, adjusted the position before stopping.
Yang Yi and the others got out leaving the vicinity of their car, while four more individuals disembarked from another vehicle.
A middle-aged man in black clothes with an AK74 rifle slung across his chest and wearing a bulletproof vest, but no helmet unlike the fully equipped Trident members, was called Lachie, known as one of Jethro’s confidants.
Lachie and his four men did not spread out but stood off to the side, while Yang Yi and his group quickly dispersed. Everyone except Yang Yi lay down far apart on the ground. Furthermore, as soon as Paul lay down, he immediately placed the sniper rifle on the ground and swiftly aimed it at Jethro’s location.
Lachie exclaimed urgently, "Hey, hey! Don’t be nervous! Put the guns away, this is a negotiation, not a fight. Your actions can cause misunderstandings, stow your weapons, come over here, don’t be so hostile, guys. It’s just a negotiation, there’s no need to be too tense."
Jethro was there to negotiate, so he couldn’t afford to exhibit too strong of hostility, for fear of breaking down the talks. Therefore, all Brian could do was set his face in a stern expression and say in a deep voice, "Turn the guns away, but don’t keep your distance."
In the end, the people from Trident didn’t cluster together like Lachie and his group. They maintained a distance of more than ten meters, ready to fire at any moment, and each was responsible for watching their own direction to observe the surroundings, only now no one was pointing their guns towards the direction where Jethro was anymore.
The man named Lachie took out a pack of cigarettes, put one in his mouth and then shook another towards Yang Yi, calling out, "Buddy, want a smoke?"
Yang Yi shouldn’t have smoked. His lungs had only just recovered from an injury, but there was no need to refuse a gesture of goodwill from someone who was essentially a colleague.
Yang Yi took a few steps forward and accepted the cigarette, saying, "Thanks."
Lachie took a cigarette for someone beside him, then pulled out a lighter. After lighting Yang Yi’s cigarette first, he smiled, "Don’t mention it."
The others were too far away to be offered a cigarette. After lighting his own and the one for the person next to him, Lachie said with a relaxed face, "No need to be tense. We’ve negotiated several times already. We’re just here to do the job and then head home. There won’t be any trouble."
Lachie and his men weren’t mercenaries; they were the people Jethro always kept by his side. They weren’t bodyguards, but they were definitely trusted lieutenants.
"Your gear is very impressive. Looks like you’ve earned quite a bit. Not everyone can afford this kind of equipment. The other two Mercenary Groups are far behind, and as for us, as you have seen, we can only use Russian gear."
Shaking his head, seemingly dissatisfied with his own equipment, Lachie quickly followed with a smile, "But in Ukraine, it’s better to use Russian gear. It’s less conspicuous."
Yang Yi said with a smile, "Yeah, we’ve just gotten used to this stuff and don’t want to switch. Buddy, have you been here before?"
Lachie nodded and said, "Once before, the previous times weren’t here. Don’t worry, relax a bit. The negotiations are nearly done."
Yang Yi turned his head and looked at Jethro. He was talking to three people waiting down below the building and hadn’t entered the abandoned building.
"I thought the boss and the others would go inside for the negotiation."
"No, there’s already been contact before, but still, no one trusts each other. But this time, we are delivering money, so there should be no problem. The last time we negotiated in a military camp, now that was tense."
Lachie glanced over at Jethro and said with a smile, "Now there’s no problem. The path has been laid, the most tense moment has passed."
Yang Yi looked again at Jethro, while Brian lifted his binoculars, scanning the building back and forth through the lenses.
Yang Yi pointed to the six-story building and asked, "Are there people inside?"
Lachie nodded and said, "Definitely. The other side has stationed people inside the building so that they have the terrain advantage. They are very cautious, but there’s no problem. It was the same last time."
Lachie’s face remained relaxed, but suddenly, Brian called out sternly, "Attention! There’s someone on the fifth floor, making dangerous movements! Dangerous movements!"
