Chapter 408: Chapter 396 Robot
Twenty days had passed.
Everyone except Yang Yi and Brian was complaining bitterly, because training in the polar climate was really tough and painful.
But Yang Yi was suffering even more. He would rather go out and join the others in training than spend all day alone in the room, assembling and disassembling, endlessly fiddling with those few guns.
Yang Yi could now get out of bed and walk around, at least he didn’t have to rely on a wheelchair all the time. Though he still couldn’t engage in intense activities, at last he didn’t need someone to support him to dare to go to the dining room, nor did he need Kate to look after him after her own exhausting training. To him, this was a big step forward.
At nine o’clock in the morning, Yang Yi dressed himself and walked into the dining room.
To say it was nine in the morning was just out of habit, because here at nine o’clock it was still night, sunrise was at ten fifty, and sunset was at two, and even then, sunlight was only visible when the weather was good.
As soon as Yang Yi entered the dining room, everyone quickly gathered.
After breakfast, it was time for Pasanin to take the group out for training, and Yang Yi was supposed to go back to disassemble his gun.
But today, finally, there was a change. After breakfast, Brian suddenly said, "Today we can shoot."
Yang Yi was stunned for a moment, then he asked in surprise, "We can shoot now?"
"Yes, we can."
Yang Yi was so excited he almost jumped up.
Yang Yi was desperate to improve his shooting skills. Good marksmanship was developed through shooting bullets, but being able to touch his gun without being able to shoot it was driving him nearly insane, and Brian had said it clearly, he wanted to torment him, wanted to make him touch the gun but not shoot.
"That’s great!"
Yang Yi stood up, excitedly said, "I’ll go get my gun!"
"Hold on."
Pasanin looked at Yang Yi and said, "Finally, you can shoot, great. So can they, because of you we all couldn’t even shoot, so today we’ll change our training plans and go to the shooting range as a group."
Pasanin stood up and then with a smile said, "Everyone, go get your guns and assemble here, we’re headed to the shooting range."
The shooting range was located in the same place where Yang Yi and the others were staying, just in another row of cabins.
The winter here was too cold, so the shooting place was also set up inside a cabin. The cabin faced a small hillside and had a long row of windows. Opening the windows enabled shooting, and the hillside was filled with targets, mainly elevated steel targets, because if the steel targets were placed too low, they would be buried by the snow.
The closest target was a little over twenty meters away, but the furthest was a full thousand meters. Having a large area was an advantage, at least the shooting range could be set up to be very large.
Yang Yi carried a sniper rifle, while others helped carry the rest of his guns.
Inside the shooting cabin, a fire was started, windows were opened one by one, and boxes of bullets were brought out. The shooting preparation was quickly completed.
"Let’s start with pistol shooting."
Everyone was looking forward to seeing how Yang Yi would perform after his long training, even though he hadn’t fired a single bullet during it.
Yang Yi took out a P226 from the gun case, but just at that moment, Kate yelled, "Wait."
Yang Yi turned to look at Kate. Kate pulled a handgun from her waist, reversed the muzzle, and handed the grip to Yang Yi.
"Your gun, I’m giving it back to you,"
The grip was warm with Kate’s body temperature, not cold, very warm.
When Yang Yi took the gun, he was overwhelmed by a flood of emotions. It was this gun—if he had been able to accurately hit the enemy then, perhaps Mike wouldn’t have died.
Yang Yi was momentarily lost in thought, and Kate opened her arms and embraced him.
"Forget the past, shoot well."
Kate let go of Yang Yi and nodded at him.
Yang Yi took a deep breath, then he pulled out the magazine and filled it with bullets. Next, he raised the pistol and fired at a steel target twenty meters away.
With each shot came a crisp sound, the sound of bullets striking the steel target.
Actually, Yang Yi had practiced shooting before, under Xiao Ran’s guidance, and his marksmanship was actually decent, provided he was shooting at fixed targets in a shooting range.
Yang Yi emptied the magazine. Every shot hit its target, but this was still in a shooting range, which couldn’t prove how well he would perform in actual combat.
Yang Yi put down the pistol, and just then, Xiao Ran came over to his side and pulled out a knife.
"Here’s your knife. I’ve kept it for you for a while, and now that you can move, I’m giving it back to you."
The knife was a gift from Charles to Yang Yi, which Yang Yi had given to Xiao Ran when he thought he was a goner.
Yang Yi had thought the knife would be a keepsake for Xiao Ran, but now he was alive, and the knife had returned to him.
A knife, a gun—they both held special significance for Yang Yi.
Yang Yi drew the knife out to inspect it, then sheathed it and placed it in the most convenient position.
Yang Yi glanced at the others and then smiled, "Everyone, I’m back."
"All right, enough of that! We’re all waiting to see you shoot, come on, shoot the rifle."
Yang Yi picked up a rifle, but just then, Xiao Ran anxiously said, "Shoot the sniper rifle instead! It’s better with a sniper rifle, you can undermine his confidence a bit, prevent him from being so cocky."
Paul said in a stern voice, "No, let him shoot the rifle."
Yang Yi scratched his head and said, "Actually, I’d like to shoot the sniper rifle too, go from hard to easy, how about that?"
Paul thought for a moment, then smiled, "Fine, I’ve wanted to kick your ass for a long time. If you shoot terribly, you’ll be punished. Let’s start now, begin with zeroing the scope."
Yang Yi picked an AWM and loaded the bullets into the magazine. After shooting a few test rounds to find the bullet’s point of impact, he slowly adjusted the scope until the crosshair at the center aligned with the hit point at a distance of two hundred meters.
"The scope is zeroed. May I start now?"
Paul looked at his watch and said, "It took you ten minutes, which is really slow."
Looking up at the sun, Paul chuckled, "The sun’s out, and the weather’s great today. If you can’t hit the target, you can’t use insufficient light as an excuse. Good, start then. Hit a target at six hundred meters."
Suddenly Pasanin said, "He has never used a sniper rifle before, isn’t six hundred meters too far?"
Paul’s smile was cruel. He replied with a smile, "No, start at six hundred meters."
Yang Yi rubbed his hands together, then placed the sniper rifle on a sandbag, but he didn’t rush to aim. Instead, he checked the wind speed first.
"No wind, good. Humidity is 55%, elevation is 420 meters, temperature is minus 27 degrees Celsius, distance..."
Yang Yi checked the laser rangefinder, then said in a deep voice, "The distance is 608 meters. With the .338 Lapua Magnum bullets, the trajectory should be... let me do the math."
Yang Yi mumbled to himself methodically, performing each of the pre-shooting preparations. When he finally started calculating the ballistic parameters, another five minutes had passed.
Paul’s forehead veins bulged, and eventually, he said fiercely, "Can you hurry up? If the target could move, it would have reached the other side of the Earth by now!"
"Don’t rush, don’t rush, there, it’s ready."
The calculations were quick. Yang Yi adjusted his breathing, positioned his eye behind the scope, lifted the muzzle slightly, and carefully, diligently aimed the right scope reticle at the steel target.
With a bang of a shot and a brief moment later, the snow atop the distant steel target shook off, followed by a crisp sound after another moment.
"I hit it, right?"
Paul put down his binoculars, and the way he looked at Yang Yi was as if he was seeing a monster.
Yang Yi nodded and said, "I hit it!"
Suddenly Xiao Ran said, "No, this is unreasonable!"
In a low voice, Pasanin exclaimed, "What kind of joke is this? Is this some kind of joke? The first time? Really the first time?"
Suddenly Paul said, "Come on, shoot at a thousand meters. If you have the guts, shoot at a thousand meters and let’s see!"
No one spoke. Yang Yi positioned his eye behind the scope again, and he began to measure the wind speed, the distance, the temperature—everything he could measure.
Unable to contain himself, Paul roared, "Is it necessary to measure again? And do you have to say it out loud? Can’t you be faster?"
This time Yang Yi was a bit quicker, though he took a long time to aim, mainly because calculating the trajectory took a while. Just when Paul was about to urge him again, Yang Yi finally took the shot.
A distant ding signified the bullet hitting the steel target.
Paul was silent and speechless.
"Robot!"
It was Pasanin who suddenly shouted, startling Yang Yi, who then looked at Pasanin. Pasanin pointed at him and shouted again, "This guy is a robot!"
