Chapter 366: Chapter 354: Living Legend
The Criminal Records Bureau under the UK Home Office was responsible for counter-terrorism, and though it wasn’t as forceful an entity as the police or intelligence departments, the Home Office did indeed have records on terrorist suspects.
The confidential documents Schultz downloaded contained very detailed personal profiles, including names, gender, age, nationality, residence, and so on. Any information that had been identified was listed there.
As Yang Yi flipped through several photos, he discovered that the list, which extended to over four hundred individuals, truly encompassed every race; the most numerous were dangerous suspects among the new immigrants, especially those of Middle Eastern origin.
The type of photos in such records were not the typical identification portraits. Some were close-ups, others were taken from a distance, and some profiles either had just a name without a photo or just a photo without a name, with only a codename beside it.
Looking at these confidential documents, one could understand the importance of operating under a mere codename. If one could avoid leaving behind even a photo, that would naturally be even better, or rather, more formidable.
Yang Yi continued to check one profile after another until he came across one with a special label, then he turned to Mike and said, "If I’m not mistaken, IRA stands for the Irish Republican Army."
Mike nodded and said, "That’s right, the Irish Republican Army."
Yang Yi smiled and said, "The British are still most worried about the Irish Republican Army, it seems. Look at this; there’s a document specifically for members of the Irish Republican Army. This one, called Sean Higgins, extremely dangerous, carried out six bomb attacks, and now... now he’s already dead."
After finishing, Yang Yi, in confusion, said, "Why would a person who is already dead still be marked as extremely dangerous and remain on this list of dangerous individuals?"
Mike shrugged and said, "Some people are dead, but their influence continues. If all the data on them were gone once they died, wouldn’t it be very inconvenient when referencing the files?"
Yang Yi shrugged, then continued, "This one’s intense, even having two ’extreme danger’ tags, wow, also dead..."
Mike, in a grave tone, said, "That means ’extreme danger’ is not sufficient to describe the level of threat this person posed. The highest danger level at the Home Office is ’extreme danger.’ If they think someone is even more dangerous than that, what can they do but add several ’extreme danger’ tags?"
Yang Yi laughed and said, "Now this guy is really something. McDonald Quinn, with four ’extreme danger’ tags, actually four of them. Geez, a bomb expert, responsible for numerous bombings. Fuck, it was him who carried out the bombing that killed Lord Mountbatten!"
Yang Yi was very surprised, while Mike immediately stood up from his chair, and then he blurted out loudly, "What did you say?"
Seeing how shocked Mike appeared, Yang Yi became somewhat nervous.
"What’s wrong? What did I say? Oh, this person was behind the bombing that killed Admiral of the Fleet Lord Mountbatten."
Mike’s breathing started to quicken, and he urgently said, "His name! McDonald Quinn?"
Yang Yi turned his head to carefully check the name again, then nodded and said, "Yes, McDonald Quinn. What about him?"
Mike was extremely excited as he exclaimed, "The Godfather of Bombs! He is the Godfather of Bombs! A veteran of the Irish Republican Army, at least half of the bomb-making methods popular in the world now were invented by him... he... he is the Godfather of Bombs!"
Yang Yi took another look at McDonald Quinn’s file and said, "It’s no wonder he is tagged as highly dangerous. Hmm, do you know him?"
Mike took a deep breath and said, "I’ve heard of him, just heard of him, but who doesn’t know McDonald Quinn? He is a big shot! I told you, he is a father figure in bomb-making. CIA often uses six types of bombs that were designed by him, KGB adopted his design plans too, and who knows how many MI6 agents have died from bombs he made, just one man who defeated MI6, alone!"
As he spoke, Mike moved to the computer and eagerly said, "Let me see his file; this is a legendary figure."
McDonald Quinn’s file contained over ninety photos, from his young appearance in his thirties to the most recent photo marked as taken in 2013, and the current McDonald Quinn had turned into an old man with a white beard.
McDonald Quinn, with his neatly trimmed white beard, wearing a plaid tweed suit, sitting on a bench in the park feeding pigeons, and looking at his genuine smile brimming with a gentlemanly air, Yang Yi simply couldn’t associate this man with a terrorist.
Yang Yi had a very deep impression of the Irish Republican Army because he spent his childhood in London, and no British person or resident in the United Kingdom could be unfamiliar with the IRA.
The IRA indeed was a terrifying memory for a generation of Britons.
"Since the Ministry of the Interior has all the information on McDonald Quinn, even taking his photo every year, then why don’t they arrest him?"
Yang Yi was indeed confused, but Mike, sitting in front of the computer looking at McDonald Quinn’s file, said in a deep voice, "According to the peace agreements, the British government must issue pardons to many leaders of the IRA, which is one of the main conditions for achieving the peace agreement in Northern Ireland. Therefore, the British would never arrest McDonald Quinn. Moreover, it’s the existence of someone like McDonald Quinn that forced the British government to compromise."
"A formidable person."
"Of course, he is a formidable person. MI6 is strong, but even MI6 has no way to deal with McDonald Quinn. You have no idea how powerful this man is! Just think, he killed Lord Mountbatten and is still alive and well."
Mike turned around, tapping the computer screen with his finger as he said somberly, "What is a legend? This man is a legend, a living legend. The British government would kill him a hundred times over if they could, but they dare not let him die, because they cannot afford the consequences of his death."
After saying this, Mike let out a sigh and continued, "I always thought he was in Ireland; never expected he would go to Italy. It’s strange, how could the Italian government dare to let this man enter and settle there?"
Yang Yi laughed and replied, "You must have not looked closely. It says here that he’s changed his name to Aegir Nissen. I bet it was the Irish and British governments working together to send him abroad to avoid the trouble he could stir up if he stayed in Ireland and got unhappy one day."
Mike whistled and laughed, "Cunning Brits, you’re right, it’s very possible that it’s a fake identity provided by the British. If they could send him far away, of course, they would want nothing more."
Yang Yi thought for a while, then curiously said to Mike, "You’re very interested in this man, hmm, does he have anything to do with us?"
Mike was taken aback for a moment, then he chuckled and shook his head, "He’s old now, and I’m old as well. He’s from my era. I’m just a bit excited to see a legend from my time."
