Chapter 344: Chapter 332: Instant-Boiled Mutton

What did Yang Yi want to do?

Yang Yi wanted to eat Shuan Yang Rou.

Shuan Yang Rou is different from hotpot; each has its own characteristics and its own followers. As for which one Yang Yi preferred, he couldn’t really say—he loved them both.

But the base broth for Shuan Yang Rou was easy to make; Yang Yi couldn’t handle the spicy hotpot base at all, so Shuan Yang Rou was the only option.

In a small supermarket run by Chinese, Yang Yi found sesame paste and also got some lamb, which was fresh rather than sliced. But as long as his knife skills were up to par, fresh lamb was even better than frozen slices.

Next were various vegetables. As for common hotpot ingredients like fish balls, duck intestines, or tripes, they were nowhere to be found. Not that Yang Yi didn’t want to buy them; he simply couldn’t find them.

Shopping for these ingredients took over an hour, and by the time Yang Yi got home, Mike and the others couldn’t wait any longer.

"You said you would bring back dinner, not ingredients; there’s a difference,"

Brian said very seriously because he was hungry. After sleeping all day, he was now extremely hungry, so his tone was not very friendly upon seeing what Yang Yi brought back.

"This will be quick, trust me, you won’t be disappointed,"

Yang Yi couldn’t find a suitable pot—the pots in the Western-style kitchen were too tall and not appropriate for Shuan Yang Rou. But this was an easy fix; a stainless steel mixing bowl could perfectly substitute as a pot for the meat.

"Kate, wash all the vegetables clean. Tang Guo! Tang Guo!"

Yang Yi shouted a few times. Tang Guo lifted her head from the computer and said, "What’s up?"

"Stop what you’re doing; it’s time to eat. Clear the table, and by the way, help me mix the sesame paste,"

Tang Guo paused, then said, "Are we having Shuan Yang Rou?"

"That’s right."

"But how do I mix the sesame paste?"

Yang Yi gave Tang Guo a surprised look then realized she was genuinely clueless about how to mix the sesame paste.

"Never mind, I’ll do it. Charles, give me a hand, slice this meat."

Yang Yi took out the fresh meat he had bought and said to Charles, "If you want to eat soon, help me cut this meat into thin slices, the thinner the better. Let’s see your knife skills."

Charles pulled out a small knife from his waist, not quite like Yang Yi’s knife, but they shared the qualities of being thin and sharp.

Charles washed the knife under the faucet and was about to start slicing the lamb when Yang Yi urgently said, "Wait a second, that’s a knife for killing people."

"I don’t mind using it to cut meat."

"But I do mind..."

Yang Yi looked around at the others, "Don’t you mind? Charles is about to use his knife for killing to slice the lamb we’re going to eat."

Brian frowned and said, "What’s the big deal? Let him use whatever he’s comfortable with."

Paul shook his head, "I don’t mind."

Mike laughed too, "I don’t mind either."

Kate looked at Yang Yi, hesitated for a moment, then nodded and said, "Actually, I’m slightly bothered by it, but it’s not a big deal, okay, I’m fine."

Charles had already started. He sliced off an extremely thin slice of meat and asked Yang Yi, "Like this?"

"No, it’s still too thick. I’m telling you it’s all about your knife skills. You have to slice it until it’s translucent, the thinner the better."

Yang Yi set up an induction cooker and placed a stainless steel pot on top, only adding some ginger slices and two segments of scallion to the water. Hot pot for lamb didn’t need complex seasonings, as the taste was all about freshness. Besides, Yang Yi didn’t know how to make any other broth base.

Brian couldn’t stand it anymore. He frowned and said, "You’re going to cook our dinner with just this plain water? I think it’s better to call for a takeaway. Does anyone want pizza?"

Yang Yi said urgently, "Don’t rush, trust me, you’ll regret eating pizza."

While speaking, Yang Yi drew his own knife.

In fact, Yang Yi was reluctant to use his "Moonlight" to cut meat, but this knife was the most comfortable one he’d ever used, and it was really sharp.

Yang Yi also washed the knife, then cut a slice of meat. He held up the meat slice and compared it to the one Charles had cut, then said with great joy, "Charles, mine is thinner than yours, really, look!"

As if insulted, Charles gave Yang Yi a glance and said sternly, "Are you provoking me? Yes, you are provoking me. You think your knife skills are great? Okay, then I’ll show you."

Charles had been rather casual when slicing meat, but now he picked up the pace, slicing the meat incredibly, incredibly thin and evenly. What was most impressive was that he was also extraordinarily fast.

Yang Yi picked up his pace too. He’d never used a knife to cut lamb before, but he truly had a gift for using knives.

Brian watched for a while, then suddenly drew a knife as well, a tactical knife, and said in a deep voice, "Let me show you what a real master looks like!"

Paul sighed and said, "Actually, I didn’t want to, but I need to show you my strength."

Mike quietly drew a dagger, a small, double-edged one.

The five of them lined up along the countertop, slicing lamb in unison. Soon, Yang Yi became even more surprised because none of these people were good at cooking, yet they handled their knives with impressive skill.

Even Mike was cutting with lightning speed, leaving Yang Yi stunned. He thought that even if he couldn’t match Charles, he should still be better than the rest, yet these four old-timers were each more fiercely skilled than the last.

Charles glanced at Yang Yi again and, with a dismissive chuckle, suddenly said, "Watch closely!"

Suddenly, Charles placed his left hand on the cutting board, fingers spread wide, and started stabbing rapidly with the knife in his right hand between his fingers.

Yang Yi’s eyes widened as he watched, and Brian, with a slight smile, also placed his hand on the countertop.

The four men, including Mike, stopped slicing meat and began to show off their knife skills.

"Stop showing off. Don’t you want to eat?"

Yang Yi didn’t dare to imitate them because he had never played with knives like that, and he had too many other things to practice without time for such tricks.

Charles suddenly withdrew his hand and continued slicing the lamb. However, he managed to perform some flourishes in the intervals of cutting the meat. Even so, the dozens of pounds of meat were quickly sliced into thin pieces.

Finally, with the food preparation completed, Brian, somewhat reluctantly, put away his knife and addressed Yang Yi, "I want to see how you make dinner out of a pot of plain water."

The water had boiled. Yang Yi distributed the sesame paste bowls and said confidently, "Just wait and see. Although it’s very simple, you won’t be disappointed."

With everything ready, Yang Yi sat at the dining table, put the mushrooms in the pot, and after waiting for the water to boil again, took a deep breath and said, "Our equipment is basic, but I’ll treat you to authentic copper pot lamb hotpot when I get the chance. For now, just watch how I eat."
