Chapter 273: Chapter 272 Good People Deserve Good Rewards
Yang Yi pulled the car to the side of the road, and then all three men shrank down in their seats, while Xiao Ran tucked a handgun into the back of her waistband and stood at the roadside.
As the oncoming car drew near, Xiao Ran stuck out her thumb, signaling that she needed help, and the damage to the car’s front end added credibility to her request for assistance.
But nothing was more effective than a beautiful woman with flowing long hair standing by the roadside.
The car had originally driven past, but upon seeing that the person seeking help was a beauty, the vehicle stopped, reversed, and pulled up to the curb.
The car window rolled down, and a young man poked his head out, looking at the frantic Xiao Ran and saying, "Can I help you with something?"
Xiao Ran walked over with a look of urgency and said loudly, "Yes, my car just crashed. Could you... lend me your car?"
"Okay, okay!"
The man got out of the car and stood beside it with a look of resignation, saying, "Take it, just drive it away. It’s a new car I just bought for my first long trip. Drive it away."
Xiao Ran lowered the handgun she had pointed at the man and said coldly, "Get out."
Yang Yi and the others sat up straight, got out of the car, and upon seeing the three men, the young man turned his head away in grief and anger.
The car was a super common Ford F150 pickup in the United States. Yang Yi opened the door, noting how impeccably clean the interior was.
The driver, a man in his twenties, wore a look of nothing but annoyance on his face.
Zhang Yong said to Boer, "Hey, what are you waiting for? Help me load the water."
Boer and Zhang Yong moved the water onto the newly acquired vehicle. Xiao Ran shrugged apologetically at the young man, saying, "Sorry, you’re just unlucky."
Yang Yi also smiled and asked, "Your first car?"
"Yes, my first car."
Yang Yi scratched his head and said, "I really sympathize with you, and I understand your feelings, but... there’s no choice, you’re just unlucky. But don’t worry, maybe you’ll get a call from the police soon, and then find your car. We’re just borrowing it for a bit. If you’re lucky and we’re lucky, there won’t be many bullet holes in your car. I’ll try to ensure that."
The young man, seeing the rifles on Zhang Yong and Boer’s backs, wisely chose not to comment.
Yang Yi waved at the young man and said, "Give me your phone, quickly."
"You’ve taken my car, and now you want my phone too? Oh Lord."
Although he appeared aggrieved, the young man still took out his phone and handed it to Yang Yi, as Xiao Ran had raised her gun again. Once he had the phone, Yang Yi searched the young man from top to bottom.
Yang Yi climbed into the driver’s seat, and as he was buckling his seatbelt, he suddenly felt it was necessary to warn the young man.
"Let me tell you, you should know from our looks that we’re not ordinary people, right? That’s right, we’re being hunted by very dangerous individuals. Our car is still drivable, but I advise you not to try and drive the car we’ve left behind, because if you do, you might just get shot dead. Also, I took your phone so you can’t call the police. I said I will leave the phone in your car."
Yang Yi looked at Zhang Yong and asked, "Anything else to add?"
Zhang Yong shook his head and said, "If I were doing this kind of thing somewhere else, I’d kill him and then take the body away in the car."
Xiao Ran suddenly said, "He saw my face."
Yang Yi extended the handgun and said, "Then we might as well kill him."
The young man being hijacked was about to cry, and he said loudly, "Oh God, please don’t kill me, I won’t call the police, I won’t say anything..."
Xiao Ran said, "I suddenly feel guilty about killing someone trying to help me, but the best choice is to kill him, what should I do?"
After hesitating for a moment, Xiao Ran said, "How much did you pay for your car?"
"Thirty-five thousand US dollars..."
"I’ll give you five thousand US dollars, consider it a rental for the car, then you’ll find your car again, trust me, if you call the police and we get caught, I’ll say you’re our accomplice."
Yang Yi took out a driver’s license from the glove compartment and handed it to Xiao Ran, who looked at it and said solemnly, "Kelly, we don’t want to hurt you. If the police asks, just say the car was stolen, but better not describe what I look like. Take the money."
Xiao Ran took out a stack of cash, and that Kelly received it with trembling hands, then Xiao Ran smiled and said, "Five thousand US dollars for renting the car is quite a good deal, isn’t it? There’s water left for you in the car, wait here for some kind-hearted person to give you a lift, don’t hurry to call the police, goodbye."
Waving at the young man, Yang Yi turned the car and drove away with a cloud of dust.
Watching the previous car owner quickly disappear behind them, Zhang Yong said lightly, "You guys are too soft-hearted. In this situation, it’s best to kill someone to silence them. Even if you can’t bring yourself to do that, at least you could have taken him with us. This is too risky."
Xiao Ran said coldly, "He wanted to help me. Good people should be rewarded."
Zhang Yong turned and said, "The idea that good people get rewarded is too naive, too immature, too detached from reality. It’s easy to die, really."
Xiao Ran said firmly, "There’s no need for you to teach me that, I know that good people usually don’t get rewarded, but in my case, within my capabilities, I can make sure good people get rewarded. If God won’t help good people, I will."
Yang Yi laughed and said, "Usually, I replace ’God’ with ’the heavens,’ but I agree with you. We’re not good people, but at least we shouldn’t bully the good ones, right?"
Having switched to a new car that was easier to drive and more comfortable to ride in, Yang Yi’s mood was considerably brighter, and the mood of Zhang Yong and the others improved greatly as well.
The car headed south; since there was no way to find a detour to leave, the only option was to get to the busy freeway as quickly as possible.
After a while, Zhang Yong suddenly said, "I still feel like we shouldn’t have let that guy go. It’s an endless source of trouble, and I’m starting to regret it."
Yang Yi laughed and said, "Regret is too late now, and also, I think I am a good person too. I have a kind heart that enjoys helping others."
Xiao Ran said disdainfully, "You, the Throat-Slitting Maniac, have the nerve to say you’re a good person?"
"I kill people, but that doesn’t stop me from being a good person, does it? Is there a conflict? Actually, there’s no conflict. If someone tries to kill me, it’s only then that I..."
Zhang Yong suddenly said sharply, "Stop talking, look ahead!"
A convoy was coming their way, which stopped at the roadside, and there were at least a dozen people by the road.
Yang Yi slammed on the brakes, and Zhang Yong lifted Xiao Ran’s binoculars for a look, then said, "It’s a military convoy, turn around and flee, no, drive into the desert; if they follow us, then it confirms they’re definitely enemies."
Yang Yi immediately turned into the desert, and two vehicles from the ones parked by the roadside also immediately drove into the desert, heading straight for them.
