Chapter 271 - 270: Gas Station

Chapter 271: Chapter 270: Gas Station

The car kept moving, so the helicopter and fighter jet soon vanished from sight.

Yang Yi, excited, raised his right hand and high-fived Zhang Yong forcefully, both bursting into exhilarated laughter.

"Shall we head into the desert?"

"No, not into the desert. Just keep driving on the road, take every turn we see, but we can’t go into the desert. Following wheel tracks, we’d never be able to run away."

"But there’s quite a distance to the next turn if we continue on this road."

"No choice, it’s up to fate now."

Zhang Yong seemed calm, but his words lacked confidence.

However, they were now at the mercy of luck. Good luck would mean finding a turn before the enemies arrived; bad luck would mean a direct confrontation. In any case, they could not enter the desert since, without fuel, they wouldn’t be able to leave, and Yang Yi and the others would have to walk out on foot.

Luck was on their side—they weren’t blocked mid-way. Upon reaching a place called Kelso, they finally arrived at a crossroads with a gas station.

Seeing the road sign ahead, Yang Yi said to Zhang Yong beside him, "We have to refuel."

Zhang Yong nodded and replied in a low voice, "If someone is coming by car to intercept us, they probably won’t arrive so soon. But if they are using planes, it’s hard to predict. This road is definitely the best spot for an ambush."

From the back, Xiao Ran added, "We’re currently halfway between Las Vegas and Los Angeles. If the enemy started searching for us last night, then they can’t be too far from here. They might even have been searching nearby all along, so they could get here quickly, possibly even before us."

The trouble was that the enemy hadn’t just set out; they had begun their pursuit last night, just like Yang Yi’s group, so whether they would encounter the enemy here was uncertain.

With the car running low on fuel, they had to enter the town, refuel, and then leave, so they really had no choice in the matter.

From a distance, they saw the gas station. Yang Yi stopped the car, Zhang Yong took a handgun and concealed it on his person, then grabbed a walkie-talkie and said solemnly, "I’ll scout ahead by myself. If I tell you to run, don’t worry about me, just go somewhere else, understand?"

"Understood."

Zhang Yong opened the door and walked towards the gas station alone.

Yang Yi waited by the roadside for quite some time before Zhang Yong’s voice finally came through the walkie-talkie.

"All clear, come over!"

Yang Yi immediately drove the car towards the gas station.

After parking the car in front of the fuel pump, Xiao Ran started refueling while Zhang Yong had already bought lots of water and food from the convenience store. Yang Yi got out and started loading the supplies into the car with Zhang Yong, waiting for Xiao Ran to finish filling up the tank.

They worked quickly and efficiently, attending to their tasks in the shortest time possible. Just as they were all set to leave, what they feared arrived nonetheless.

Three vehicles burst into the gas station with ferocious speed.

Two pickup trucks and a large SUV entered from the opposite entrance and came to a halt at the fuel pumps.

The first person got out of the SUV and shouted, "Hurry up!"

Xiao Ran grabbed Boer by the hair and yanked his head down, forcing him to bend sideways and shoved him into the gap between the car seats.

Yang Yi had already reached for the pistol stored in the car door’s compartment when Zhang Yong whispered, "Don’t move, wait."

Yang Yi started the car, but before he could shift gears, the person who had just gotten out of the off-road vehicle looked towards their car and took two steps back after a moment.

People had gotten out of all three vehicles, and Zhang Yong whispered, "This doesn’t look good..."

"It’s them!"

The first person to get out suddenly shouted excitedly, and then he reached for the gun at his lower back.

Zhang Yong didn’t hesitate any longer, raised his hand, and with a snap, shot the shouting man in the head.

Those cars hadn’t noticed Yang Yi and his group entering the gas station; they had the same intention as Yang Yi—to refuel—so the people who came out of the cars weren’t carrying weapons.

Yang Yi, who wasn’t a good shot, was still able to be effective this time. He fired three shots in succession, all hitting the same person in the chest, but the man he shot fell to the ground while still managing to pull out his pistol.

Zhang Yong leaned to the side, fired a shot from beside Yang Yi, and after blowing the head off the man who had been shot but was seemingly unharmed, he yelled, "Bulletproof vests, let’s go!"

Yang Yi shifted into gear with his right hand, then zoomed out at once.

Just then, a pickup truck that hadn’t turned off its engine also sped out and rammed heavily into the front of Yang Yi’s car.

Zhang Yong began firing from inside the car, shooting at the enemies who were only separated from him by two layers of windshield glass.

Bullets change direction when they pass through glass. Using armor-piercing rounds with slightly less stopping power but good penetration, the bullets could still hit their target after passing through one layer of glass, but after two layers, whether the bullets would hit their target became a matter of luck.

Neither Zhang Yong nor his opponent managed to hit each other. Then Zhang Yong was a step faster; he had a rifle beside him, ready to shoot as soon as he disengaged the safety.

He took up the rifle and through the windshield, Zhang Yong fired off all thirty bullets in one go.

Yang Yi put the car in reverse, backing up.

Xiao Ran also opened her car door, holding her automatic rifle and madly shooting at another car from the side. Even Boer, who had sat up, was screaming as he wildly fired his own rifle at a car in the back.

Yang Yi and his group had their guns at hand, while the enemy was a split second slower in drawing theirs, firmly suppressing them with no chance to exchange fire with Zhang Yong and the others.

Yang Yi reversed close to a fuel pump before stopping. Then, with a sharp turn of the wheel, accompanied by a screeching noise, he drove out of the gas station.

"Stop the car!"

Zhang Yong suddenly yelled, and then fiercely said, "We can’t run! We must take out all the enemies before we leave!"

Yang Yi was surprised that Zhang Yong chose to eliminate all the enemies before leaving, but he understood because their fear was being followed by the enemy.

Yang Yi stopped the car, and the enemies, seemingly not expecting Yang Yi to stop, were just getting down from their cars with guns ready to shoot. But Zhang Yong and Xiao Ran beat them to it, knocking them to the ground.

In a close-range encounter, the one who shoots first has the advantage, and suppressing the enemy provides even greater advantage. However, the idea of rushing forward to ensure the enemies’ deaths with close-range shots was very dangerous.

Zhang Yong pushed the door open and got out of the car; Xiao Ran also picked up her rifle and got out.

Some of the enemies wore bulletproof vests, and although this round of gunfighting was fierce, there was no chance to shoot the enemies’ vital parts. Therefore, although all three enemy cars were riddled with bullet holes, the extent of the damage done to the people inside was unclear, making the upcoming battle very dangerous.
