Chapter 263: Chapter 262: A Single Remark Wakes the Dreamer

Yang Yi felt that going out in this state was like sending Zhang Yong to his death, even though it was possible he might not encounter the assassin, what if he did.

But Zhang Yong didn’t appreciate Yang Yi’s concern. He grabbed Yang Yi’s arm and said with dissatisfaction, "What’s this, looking down on me? You think I’ve had too much to drink? I’ll tell you!"

Zhang Yong pointed at his nose and shouted, "Even if I hadn’t had a drop, it wouldn’t affect anything!"

His words were all muddled, yet he still claimed he was alright. Yang Yi sighed and said in a low voice, "Brother Yong, you’ve told me before, people who live by the knife shouldn’t drink, especially not to the point of drunkenness. I know you’re upset, but the way you are now...forget it, can you go back to your room for now and get your things together?"

Zhang Yong slapped away the hand Yang Yi was using to support him and said, "What things to get together? I have nothing to gather. What upset? I’m not upset, I’m fine, look, just look."

Zhang Yong threw two punches at the air and then pointed to himself, "See that? Can you even take these punches? Can you?"

Yang Yi was very anxious, so he didn’t want to waste any more words with Zhang Yong. He needed to hurry and make arrangements for Zhang Yong and then find Xiao Ran and Boer.

After a moment of thought, Yang Yi said in a low voice, "Fine, I know you’re okay. Now take me to your room, I need to talk to you about something."

"Go to what room? Didn’t you say someone wants to kill you? Come on, take me there, I’ll sort them out!"

At first, Yang Yi thought Zhang Yong had only had a little to drink, but not too much. Now he fully realized that though he seemed alright at first glance, it was apparent from his speech that he had indeed drunk too much.

Looking at Zhang Yong, Yang Yi pondered for a moment and then spoke in a hushed voice, "Enemy contact!"

Zhang Yong shivered instantly, and his gaze changed entirely.

Scanning the surroundings warily, Zhang Yong spoke in a lowered voice, "Where?"

This tactic was really effective, extremely so. As long as Zhang Yong wasn’t completely drunk, just a single phrase was enough to evoke his mercenary instincts for danger.

Fortunately, Zhang Yong was drunk but not utterly so.

Yang Yi lowered his voice and said, "We encountered eight men, I killed five, but these were only part of them. We’ve been attacked several times in the past few days. The enemy used machine guns and rocket launchers against us on the street, it’s very dangerous, and now we can almost confirm that they are mercenaries."

Zhang Yong jolted again. When Yang Yi talked about combat, Zhang Yong’s focused eyes became alert once more.

"Right here, in Las Vegas?"

"Yes."

Zhang Yong took a deep breath and said quietly, "Trouble. Who did you provoke?"

"It’s not me, it’s... it’s a long story. Right now, I’m protecting someone who is willing to pay a billion. Brother Yong, are you sobering up now?"

Zhang Yong, full of concern, asked, "Did you take a deposit?"

"No, circumstances don’t allow it. I can’t receive the money for now, but it shouldn’t be a problem."

Zhang Yong sighed again, speaking softly, "Little Egg, it’s not just about earning this money; you need to stay alive to spend it. I don’t know what’s happening with you, but mercenaries who dare to use rocket launchers and machine guns on the streets of Las Vegas aren’t scary; what’s terrifying is the employer who allows them to act like that. You need to understand, this is the United States, not Iraq."

Having spoken hurriedly, Zhang Yong looked around, then he briskly walked to a table set up with complimentary bottled water, grabbed a bottle, unscrewed it, and poured it over his head.’

He shook his head, running his fingers through his wet hair, and said to Yang Yi, "Let’s get out of here first. This isn’t a place to talk."

Yang Yi responded in astonishment, "You’re sober already? No way, that’s too fast."

Zhang Yong said irritably, "We’re dealing with life-or-death matters here; I’d be dead if I didn’t sober up!"

Zhang Yong was still unsteady on his feet, but his mind was much clearer. Once they quickly exited the hotel entrance, he urgently asked, "Now, tell me exactly what’s going on."

Yang Yi spoke quietly, "It’s not something that can be explained in a few words, but it’s really dangerous right now. I have a partner, that woman, Xiao Ran, whom I’ve mentioned to you before, she’s protecting that guy."

Zhang Yong said in surprise, "Hold on, Xiao Ran? That woman, what’s she doing there? Are you out of your mind?"

Yang Yi pressed, "It’s not what you think. The situation is complicated. Just know that Xiao Ran is no ordinary person. Right now, just the two of us are protecting a man named Boer, with assassins still chasing us. I had them hide before coming to find you. Can we find them first and then talk about this in detail?"

Zhang Yong spoke in a grave tone, "Are we talking about assassins, or mercenaries? Clarify this for me."

"There are both assassins and mercenaries, but from the last two encounters, I think they’re mercenaries, definitely mercenaries. Assassins don’t operate like that."

Zhang Yong exhaled, "This is a real mess. If we received half the down payment, we could go on with the job, but it’s not worth it if we haven’t received a penny. Let me put it this way, mercenaries and assassins are different. Employing mercenaries means they’re going after you with real guns and weapons, you get that?"

Yang Yi spoke softly, "I understand."

Zhang Yong shook his head, "Mercenaries are for assaulting fortified positions. Using mercenaries means it’s the last resort, a fight to the death. No Mercenary Group would dare to cause trouble in the United States unless they never want to work again, or they can get a huge bounty, big enough to retire on after this one job, or unless they aren’t really mercenaries, but a private military force maintained by a super powerful entity in the United States, one that wouldn’t even fear if they tore a hole in the sky. If it were up to me, I wouldn’t take the job for all the money in the world. You either end up silenced or eliminated by the U.S. government. Either way, it doesn’t end well."

Yang Yi replied helplessly, "Now’s not the time to talk about this, is it?"

"No, it’s necessary. Tell me about these mercenaries. Are they after the money, or are they private military forces? If it’s just for the money, that’s still manageable; any big or powerful Mercenary Group wouldn’t take a job that’s basically suicide. If they’re a private force, though... What’s your relationship with Boer? Are you bound to protect him with your life?"

Yang Yi understood the subtext of Zhang Yong’s question and said quietly, "Actually, we’re not that closely connected. If we can’t cover for him, we can withdraw."

Zhang Yong breathed a sigh of relief, looking relieved, "That’s easier to handle then. If we haven’t received a down payment, we’re not officially on the job, that’s good. Let’s hurry to find them now. No more talking, we’ll leave the United States as soon as we can."

Yang Yi said quietly, "Of course we need to leave. I’m just worried about how to get out. The enemy’s on us tight."

Zhang Yong gave a faint smile, "Snakes have their paths, rats have their routes. Don’t worry, I’m good at escaping with my life."
