Chapter 260: Chapter 259: In a Difficult Situation

Xiao Ran’s words stunned Yang Yi momentarily; he realized that whenever he dealt a fatal blow, it almost always involved slitting throats or cutting necks, without exception.

Why cut the neck? Because the neck is indeed a handy target.

The knife Yang Yi was currently using was short, just over twenty centimeters, and taking away the length of the handle, only about ten centimeters remained. To instantly kill someone with this length, one must hit a vital spot.

If a knife pierces the lung or liver or another vital organ, without prompt rescue, it can indeed be fatal. But a person who is stabbed would still have the time and strength to pull a trigger, even if death were certain. In battles where life and death are decided in an instant, these spots can’t really be considered vulnerabilities.

The few spots where a knife can instantly kill are the heart, cervical spine or the back of the head, and the neck. Moreover, for the neck, it’s not enough to just attack the throat; one must sever the carotid artery.

People have the instinct to protect themselves; as long as their hands are free, they naturally shield their vital organs without needing to be taught. Trying to stab the heart with a knife is actually quite difficult.

But the neck is different – it’s actually harder to protect than the heart. Though severing the carotid artery doesn’t guarantee instant death like damaging the back of the head or cervical spine, the sudden rupture and the resulting spurt of blood mean that even if the stabbed person lives for several more seconds, they definitely won’t have the strength to fight back.

So, intentionally or not, Yang Yi’s attacks were aimed at the neck.

However, the biggest drawback of slashing the neck is that the blood doesn’t just flow out; it spurts out. To Yang Yi, this wasn’t a problem – at most, he just needed to be careful not to get sprayed with blood.

But for Xiao Ran, who had a phobia of blood, watching it spurt out like a fountain right before his eyes was just too much to bear.

It was already good that Xiao Ran didn’t faint, but Yang Yi couldn’t come to terms with the fact that Xiao Ran actually had a phobia of blood.

"It doesn’t matter whether I’m the Throat-Slitting Maniac or not, but you’ve been trained since you were young. How can you have a phobia of blood?"

Xiao Ran replied irritably, "If I didn’t have a phobia, how would I have become a Sharpshooter?"

After taking a breath, Xiao Ran shook off the hand with which Yang Yi was supporting her and said in a low voice, "Actually, a blood phobia can be overcome. You just need to see more blood, but..."

"But what?"

"After my foster mother passed away, there was no one to help me overcome this issue. I didn’t have the courage to force myself to get past my phobia of blood, and so here we are."

The three of them walked quickly; they were about to reach the first floor. After that, they could turn into an internal corridor and leave through the same small door they had entered.

They couldn’t talk anymore at this point. Xiao Ran gestured, signaling Yang Yi to go ahead while she raised her handgun.

Glancing down, they saw that there was no one guarding the stairwell on the first floor. Yang Yi walked briskly over, and then the three of them immediately turned into the internal corridor leading to the small door.

Yang Yi hoped they could leave smoothly. Judging by the current situation, it was very possible that the enemies who came this time weren’t numerous enough; after having taken down eight people already, they had good chances of leaving.

They were almost at the small door; all was calm along the way. Yang Yi once again created some distance from the other two. If someone was guarding outside the small door, he hoped to take them out with his knife to avoid making noise.

Yang Yi was almost at the door when he heard the clamor coming from behind.

Yang Yi’s face turned pale, and he glanced back abruptly, only to see two people almost simultaneously rushing out from behind them.

Within two meters, Yang Yi feared no one, but he was powerless against those chasing from behind.

His reach was too short.

Just then, Xiao Ran’s gun sounded twice, followed by another two shots.

Xiao Ran’s gun was equipped with a silencer, which could only reduce the noise, not completely eliminate it, making the near-silent effect featured in movies utterly impossible.

The silencer on Xiao Ran’s gun was large and very effective, to the extent that the sound of the gun’s action could be heard, but the noise was still too loud, at least enough for the nearby enemies to hear it clearly.

After firing two shots at each person, Xiao Ran successfully hit her targets, but they also returned fire, though Xiao Ran’s shots prevented them from hitting her.

Xiao Ran fired two more shots, this time to finish off the two enemies who had been hit in the head.

Someone rushed out from behind, Xiao Ran shot him in the chest, but another enemy, upon seeing all his comrades shot and downed, didn’t rush out but instead extended an Uzi submachine gun around the corner and sprayed without even looking.

Trapped in a hallway with walls on both sides and nowhere to dodge, avoiding a bullet was difficult. But the spraying enemy aimed too high, and the bullets flew just over the heads of Boer and Xiao Ran.

Yang Yi couldn’t manage the situation behind him, so he continued towards the small door, pushed it open, and leaped outside. Realizing no one was guarding this exit, he steadied the door, watching as Boer, crouched low with a big package, surged out.

Xiao Ran didn’t just turn and run. After the bullets whizzed past her head, she raised her hand and shot the enemy’s gun-holding hand, temporarily resolving the danger before she aimed her gun at the enemy’s position and retreated step by step.

Once at the door, Xiao Ran turned and ran out, while Yang Yi shut the door and continued to sprint.

Outside the door was the parking lot. Yang Yi glanced around and saw an SUV starting up, ready to leave the parking spot, albeit about seventy or eighty meters away from them.

Carjacking was preferable to stealing if there was no time for the latter, and who knows how many assassins might be in pursuit behind.

Yang Yi looked at it and said urgently, "We must get that car!"

Yang Yi sprinted, heading straight for the parking lot’s exit, hoping to stop the car there.

Running faster than ever in his life, when he was nearly in front of the car as it was about to drive away, Yang Yi finally blocked it.

The car braked suddenly but still hit Yang Yi. However, the SUV had already been slowing down and wasn’t moving fast. Yang Yi did a forward roll right before the impact and landed on the windshield. Despite the loud bang, he wasn’t hurt.

Rolling off the hood, Yang Yi hadn’t even spoken when he saw Xiao Ran sprint to the driver’s side, point her gun at the driver, and bark harshly, "Get out! Or I’ll kill you!"
