Chapter 210: Chapter 209 Temporarily Endure
The plan was set, all that remained was action.
Mike stood up, looked at his watch, and said, "Before we set off, I need to make sure of one thing, and that is whether Yang Yi has been exposed or not."
Brian thought carefully for a moment and shook his head, "According to my judgment, he has not been exposed."
Mike shook his head, "Your experience doesn’t count because you’re out of date. What I need to know is whether Yang Yi has been caught on camera or seen by our enemies."
Yang Yi frowned, "The likelihood of being caught on camera is high, but they definitely didn’t catch my face. I always wore a hat when I was with Brian and the others, most of the time I wore sunglasses, and sometimes I even covered my face with a headscarf. As for the people who saw me, they are all dead. I’ve been very careful to hide myself."
Mike breathed a sigh of relief and smiled, "Are you sure?"
Yang Yi nodded, "I’m sure."
Mike waved his hand, "That’s good, but still be careful."
Yang Yi said gravely, "What about you guys? Will there be any danger when you leave the United States?"
Mike shrugged, "I’ve been out of the intelligence circle for six years. That’s a long time. Although I’ve always kept an eye on intelligence matters, what used to be safe channels can’t be guaranteed anymore. So, there’s a very high possibility of interception. The key factor is that I’m not sufficiently prepared."
Yang Yi immediately said, "Then why don’t you wait until you’re ready before leaving?"
Mike smiled, and then, with a look of regret, "There’s no time. From the moment I received your call, the countdown for the enemy to come knocking started. They need time, but it won’t be much. Given Hawkeye’s abilities, I estimate they will find your tracks again within twenty-four hours at the latest, or fifteen hours at the soonest. If the CIA has already made a move, we’re already surrounded."
Yang Yi cautiously said, "Fifteen hours? Starting when?"
"Starting from when you broke away from the fight last night."
Yang Yi was shocked, "Then we don’t have much time left now!"
Mike spread his hands, "There’s not much time left, but we still have enough time to leave. I’ve allowed two hours for this conversation. I’ve already packed our stuff, and now we still have... one hour of safety time."
"And you still have the mood to chat with us for so long..."
Mike, with a carefree expression, "Of course. If I don’t have this conversation with you, how can I be sure that I’m on the same boat with you? I think the time wasted is worth it."
Brian, with a calm expression, "Since that’s the case, let’s not waste any more time. Let’s set off."
Mike pulled out two car keys, handed one to Yang Yi, and said, "The car you drove here cannot be used anymore. Use mine to leave. We will call you when we get to a safe place. You go first."
Yang Yi took the car keys, stood up, and said to Mike and the others, "Everyone, be careful. We’ll meet in Europe, good luck."
Brian nodded and said solemnly, "You’re the one who really needs to be careful. Call us if something’s not right."
Mike, however, smiled, "Remember, for safety’s sake, ditch the car after you leave here. We’ll need about three days to reach Mexico. Once we’re there, it will be easy. If we haven’t called you by the fourth day, it means something has happened to us. Forget the plan we made, and just do what you think is right."
Yang Yi paused for a moment, then said softly, "I understand. Everyone, take care. Goodbye."
Without any prolonged farewells, Yang Yi pulled up his outdoor headscarf around his neck, put on his sunglasses, and then a baseball cap, nodded at the four people, and left Mike’s dirty and broken home.
Exiting the house, Yang Yi pressed the remote key, and a dusty, dilapidated car in the yard flashed its lights; he walked over, opened the car door, and sat inside.
After starting the car and taking one last look at the quiet house, Yang Yi drove away from Mike’s home.
Separating in an unfavorable situation was a foolish choice, but it had its advantages—for one, it prevented everyone from being captured in one fell swoop. Moreover, if Yang Yi had not yet been exposed, then such a risk was very much worth taking.
Yang Yi drove quite a distance, reaching the freeway, and returned to the Los Angeles city area. Then, in a place without cameras, he stopped the car, left the door open with the key in the ignition, and walked away.
Without a doubt, the car would be stolen. In the past, Yang Yi would have been reluctant to part with it, even if it was someone else’s, but seeing how Paul, Charles, and Mike didn’t hesitate to abandon their homes and everything they had, Yang Yi understood that to save his own life, he couldn’t be too attached to material possessions—if something needed to be discarded, then it must be done without any hesitation.
Yang Yi took off his hat, removed the disguises from his person, took out a T-shirt from his backpack, changed his clothes, and soon flagged down a taxi, continuing toward the bustling district of Los Angeles.
He got out of the taxi, switched to a bus, then got off the bus to take the subway. After that, another taxi, another bus—after switching transportation methods several times over the course of four or five hours and making a large loop around the city of Los Angeles, Yang Yi finally checked into a hotel.
Switching means of transportation was to lose any potential tails. Although the chances of being followed were slim, Yang Yi had to do it because it was a basic quality of a spy.
After the past few days, Yang Yi was indeed exhausted, but his heart was excited. So, the first thing he did after checking into the hotel was to call Kate and let her know that the situation they were facing was finally about to take a turn.
Yang Yi called Kate, and she picked up quickly. Waiting for her to answer, Yang Yi softly said, "Hello, it’s me."
Kate asked with extreme concern, "How are you? You haven’t contacted me for a while. Has something happened there?"
Yang Yi, unable to suppress his joy, said with a shaking voice, "I’ve finally got enough help. We’re very lucky, Kate. All the suffering we’ve endured is worth it. I’ve found some powerful people to help us. Just wait for me. I’ll be back in at least a month, at most three, and when I return, it will be time to strike back."
Kate also said with a trembling voice, "Really? Is there anything I need to do?"
Yang Yi softly said, "Certainly. You’ll have to cooperate. Someone will contact you. We’ll find Bass from those who are watching you! Kate, just hang in there a bit longer. Our counterstrike is coming soon!"
