Chapter 203: Chapter 202: Genuine Contempt

Yang Yi hung up the phone and then said to Brian, "Mike wants us to go over. He’s waiting for us."

"Actually, I didn’t want to get in touch with Mike so quickly because I didn’t know what his attitude would be, but I didn’t expect you to just spill the beans about us like that."

Brian explained with a bitter smile and then Yang Yi said in surprise, "Ah, sorry, I thought you two were good friends, so you’d want to see him as soon as possible. I didn’t think too much at the moment."

Brian waved his hand and said, "You’re young, so there are some things you don’t understand. Just because someone was a friend in the past doesn’t mean they still are now, and being an enemy in the past doesn’t mean they still are either."

Charles said in a low voice, "Let’s see him, sooner or later we have to meet."

Brian stood up and said, "Yes, sooner or later we must meet and clear things up. Yang Yi pushing me into the spotlight is good too. We don’t have to keep testing the waters. Let’s meet now."

Charles said, "Mike hates you, but once he knows the truth, he won’t hate you anymore. I think he’ll help us."

Brian sighed and said, "We’ll know the answer soon enough. I hope it turns out as you say."

Charles pointed toward the bathroom and said, "What about the guy in there?"

Brian replied indifferently, "He’s of no use anymore. Kill him, dispose of the body, and then we’ll set off."

Yang Yi didn’t know what Charles and Brian had done, nor did he know how the mercenary broker was finally dealt with, because he had left by himself in a car earlier.

What Brian meant was that if Yang Yi had not been exposed, it was best to act alone, so that even if he were discovered, it wouldn’t implicate Yang Yi.

After waiting outside for half an hour, Brian and the other two drove to the place where Yang Yi was waiting, and then the two cars set off together toward the location Mike had mentioned.

Mike lived in the suburbs of Los Angeles.

Nearly two hours of driving later, they arrived at the address Mike had given.

Yang Yi had thought Mike’s place would be a big house like Charles’s, one of those luxurious suburban mansions, but when they got there, he realized that while the place was indeed large, it had nothing to do with luxury.

Next to a narrow road, there was a decrepit large house with a car that had been abandoned for a long time parked in the yard, which was overgrown with weeds and cluttered with various debris. There were no neighbors nearby, and if Yang Yi hadn’t repeatedly confirmed that they were at the right place, he would have thought he had arrived at a junkyard.

After parking in the yard, which had no fence at all, Yang Yi got out of the car, and an old man came out of the house.

The old man gave Yang Yi a glance and said lazily, "You must be Yang Yi?"

His beard was grizzled, his hair long, wearing a T-shirt with holes, jeans that were both old and dirty, and the long hair made him look truly like a vagabond.

"Are you Mr. Smith?"

The vagabond old man nodded, then yelled towards the cars behind Yang Yi, "Come on down, I’ve seen you already. Do you really want me to invite you down?"

Brian and Charles got out of the car, and then Paul Charles slowly got out too.

Standing by the side of the car, Brian said to Mike Smith, "I never thought we’d see each other again."

Mike Smith said with an indifferent look, "Knowing that a massive prison break happened at Pelican Bay Prison, I guessed you would come, but I didn’t expect it to be so soon. Alright, come in."

There was no angry rebuke, no warm welcome; Mike Smith turned and entered his house, with Yang Yi and Brian following close behind.

Inside the house was as messy as the outside. Mike Smith sat on a sofa that was both broken and dirty, not bothering to invite Brian and the others to sit, but as soon as Brian entered, he asked, "Who’s going to speak first?"

Yang Yi glanced at Brian, then Charles said loudly, "I’ll go first, Mike. Our boss has been framed; he’s been set up. He didn’t betray anyone."

Mike looked toward Brian and said, "Really? But the testimony I saw was quite unfavorable to you. You admitted to treasonous activities, and now you’re denying it? Are you saying you have no connection with the KGB?"

Brian shook his head, then he spoke solemnly, "I didn’t betray any of you."

Mike Smith said, "What do you mean? So you did commit treason, just that you didn’t sell out our intelligence folks, is that it?"

Brian nodded.

Mike said with disdain, "Then you have committed treason."

Charles said urgently, "It’s not the same! Brian didn’t betray us, he didn’t sell out anyone. He was just framed by the KGB and the real mole working together."

Mike raised his hand and said, "I believe that the mole really exists because the CIA’s traitors aren’t limited to just you. I also believe you took the fall for the real mole, but what does that prove? You still are a traitor."

Mike spoke bluntly, making Charles anxious. Brian raised his hand to stop Charles, who was about to speak, and said with gravity, "Yes, I can’t deny that point."

"Then why are you here looking for me? Do you think I would be magnanimous enough to forgive a traitor? Brian, we used to be good friends, but that was based on something very important—that we were the same kind of people, and then you chose to betray your country."

After speaking lightly, Mike Smith said with a look of regret, "I’m not killing you because I can’t, I agreed to see you not because I’ve forgiven you, but because since you managed to find my phone number, it means my current identity is no longer usable, and I can’t stay here any longer. So, I decided to meet you before I leave. I believe you haven’t sold out the people from the intelligence agency who died, so we no longer have an irreconcilable vendetta. But you’re still a betrayer, and I still despise you, from the depths of my soul—I despise you, traitor!"

Brian sighed deeply and said, "I have nothing to say."

Mike gestured dismissively and said, "Tell me who the real mole is, and we’ll call it quits on our past grievances."

Brian shook his head and said, "I don’t know; I still don’t know to this point."

"Ha."

After shrugging his shoulders and letting out a scornful laugh, Mike Smith turned to Yang Yi and asked, "So, what are you here for?"

Yang Yi hesitated for a moment, then said, "I don’t know, actually. I came without any specific purpose... "

Mike Smith spread his hands in resignation and said, "You don’t know? Alright, that answer is not helpful, but at least it’s honest. So, tell me, how did your father actually die?"

Yang Yi thought for a moment and decided to answer truthfully, so he spoke softly, "The Grey-cloaked People."

Mike Smith took a long breath and said, "The Grey-cloaked People, of course, it was them."
