Chapter 142: Chapter 141 Declare Your Purpose
Yang Yi encountered a bit of an obstacle while learning how to pick locks: he had no real locks to practice on.
Knowing the theory behind many skills is not enough; ample practice is also needed. Lockpicking clearly falls into this category. Yang Yi wanted to become as good as Hank, but without real locks to practice on, relying solely on the principles he remembered in his mind, he could forget about ever achieving that.
Therefore, Yang Yi soon realized that continuing to share a cell with Hank didn’t make much sense, given that he knew all the principles but had no real locks to practice on.
Yang Yi had a tough week. He was subjected to George’s targeted taunting and humiliation in the special housing unit, and he could only swallow his anger. Returning to the cell and not learning any more useful lockpicking skills from Hank was frustrating.
Owen finally left too. He resigned and was transferred to another prison. The protection Yang Yi had paid for was no longer there.
It wasn’t just Owen who left, the warden would soon be transferred as well, though Owen’s departure was a promotion while the warden’s was retirement.
Yang Yi didn’t know how he would get out after killing the beast Wayne. He hadn’t thought about escaping the prison because he had too much to do inside, so the idea of breaking out never came to mind.
But after killing the beast Wayne, he definitely would have to leave the prison. It was different from when he killed someone in the minimum-security area, and different from the daily fights in the maximum-security area.
So Yang Yi still needed to consider how to break out because it was time to think about leaving.
Yang Yi asked Zhang Yong, but Zhang Yong didn’t tell him.
In fact, Zhang Yong wasn’t still angry with Yang Yi; he simply didn’t seem to know how to leave either. He never thought about leaving when he entered the prison.
In the end, it all came down to relying on oneself.
So Yang Yi felt worried, and although it didn’t show on the surface, his mood was quite low these past few days.
Finally, it was time to change shifts, and Yang Yi didn’t have to face George, the very unpleasant person. Even though Clint had two more weeks before he would be on the day shift, not having George around might make it a bit easier.
Following the guard to the entrance of the special housing unit, one of them looked at Yang Yi and said, "Are you Benjamin? I’ve heard Clint mention you."
Had he finally met a kind guard? Yang Yi felt somewhat reassured, and he smiled at the guard who had taken the initiative to greet him. "Hello, officer, it’s a pleasure to meet you."
The guard looked pleased and, smiling at Yang Yi, said, "I’m Kyle, Kyle Betman. Clint told me to look after you, so don’t worry, buddy."
He even reached out to pat Yang Yi on the shoulder, and after crossing the iron gate of the special housing unit with Yang Yi, Kyle smiled and said, "I heard you wanted to chat with Brian?"
"Uh, yes, officer, I find him very interesting. I’m thinking maybe after I get out, I could turn his story into a movie. Of course, that’s just a thought."
Kyle patted Yang Yi’s shoulder again and, laughing, said, "You’ll get to meet him today, buddy. See you later."
Clint was really good to him; he promised to help Yang Yi and, though he wasn’t yet on the day shift, had arranged for someone else to take care of matters.
Yang Yi suddenly felt very grateful to Clint. He thought maybe Clint truly considered him a friend, which was rare between guards and inmates.
After cleaning up, when it was time for Yang Yi to scrub the chimneys again, he saw Brian.
Brian looked even worse than the last time Yang Yi saw him. He was shuffling along, his eyes lifeless, looking as if he had aged several years.
As he entered the chimney, Brian saw Yang Yi and paused for a moment. He looked at Yang Yi and instinctively squeezed out a smile, then was about to enter the chimney.
At that moment, Kyle, who was escorting Brian, suddenly laughed and said, "Brian, would you like to have a chat with this young man? You’ve been doing well recently, so I can grant you this privilege."
Brian hesitated for a moment, then finally replied in a low voice, "Okay, thank you."
Kyle gestured to Yang Yi with a nod, speaking softly, "Go in, don’t bring anything, just stay out of the camera’s blind spot."
Yang Yi gave Kyle a grateful smile, then went to support Brian’s arm.
It was a reflexive action, but Brian’s face changed dramatically. He shook off the arm that Yang Yi was holding and snapped angrily, "I can walk by myself!"
Yang Yi immediately removed his hand, whispering, "Sorry."
Brian, a little huffy, quickened his pace and shuffled into the chimney, Yang Yi following closely behind, then the iron door closed behind them.
This special place for prisoners to take a walk really did resemble a chimney. You wouldn’t notice much with the door open, but as soon as it closed, seeing the wire mesh above and the tall walls all around, Yang Yi immediately felt very oppressed.
Brian slowly moved under the camera before leaning against the wall and sitting down. He looked up at the sky, covered by the wire mesh, and began to space out.
Yang Yi sat down next to Brian, pondering how to start a conversation with him.
"Your girlfriend is named Kate too, isn’t she?"
Brian, who had been looking up at the sky, suddenly spoke. Yang Yi was taken aback for a moment before replying, "She’s not my girlfriend, she’s my friend, uh, our relationship is very special."
"Then, does she have a boyfriend?"
"No."
"Do you have a girlfriend?"
"Neither do I."
"Is she pretty?"
"Very pretty, especially her figure, because she really likes sports."
"Then she’ll become your girlfriend, but be careful. Women, especially pretty women, are very deceitful."
Brian seemed distracted as he spoke. Yang Yi scratched his head and sighed, "I’m not really suited to have a girlfriend, but as for Kate, her situation seems... I don’t know, I really don’t know, I haven’t thought that much about it."
"Is it because you are in prison?"
"No, oh, yes, it is."
Brian withdrew his gaze from the sky, lowered his head, and turned to look at Yang Yi. He said in a deep voice, "It seems that you really do know a woman named Kate."
"Of course, why would I lie to you? She’s just called Kate, it’s a very common name in the United Kingdom."
Brian didn’t pick up on Yang Yi’s remark. He said seriously, "So what is your purpose in approaching me? I don’t want to waste time, so let’s get straight to the point."
Yang Yi was taken aback, then replied quietly, "No particular purpose. I’m just very curious about you and would like to hear your story, of course, only if you’re willing to tell it."
Brian smiled and said, "Nobody wants to hear stories from someone like me, especially in a place like this. I can tell you have some kind of purpose in approaching me, so before you listen to my story, why don’t you state your own purpose first, okay?"
