Chapter 141: Chapter 140: Showdown
Yang Yi considered himself someone who had experienced grand scenes, yet he felt he was still a rookie no matter what.
However, Yang Yi now truly realized something: experience couldn’t be learned but had to be accumulated through one ordeal after another.
Compared to beasts like Wayne, who had clawed their way out of mountains of corpses and seas of blood, Yang Yi discovered his own naivety. He thought he had concealed himself well, but in the eyes of the discerning, he felt utterly exposed.
At dinner time, Yang Yi went to the dining hall, and then he sat directly across from Zhang Yong.
"What’s up?"
Zhang Yong looked up at Yang Yi and then continued to eat his dinner slowly and methodically.
"Why aren’t you with your boys? What brings you here, something on your mind?"
Yang Yi kept staring at Zhang Yong, neither speaking nor moving.
"What’s the matter?"
Yang Yi finally let out a sigh, then said in a low voice to Zhang Yong, "I regard you as my master."
"Huh? Nah, don’t, you don’t have to do that. What’s really going on?"
Yang Yi gazed into Zhang Yong’s eyes and said gravely, "I regard you as my master. You tell me not to, but I truly do view you as one. You’ve taught me so much, not just martial arts, but many other things as well."
Zhang Yong was startled and said, "Why are you saying all this out of the blue? Are you in some kind of trouble?"
Yang Yi took another long breath and then spoke softly, "Even if I don’t call you master or consider you as one, to me, you’re like a good brother, a good friend. I have a lot of respect for you."
Zhang Yong started to take things seriously. This time, he looked at Yang Yi but did not ask any further questions.
Yang Yi said solemnly, "I entered the special detention area to kill Wayne, and then, I met him today."
Zhang Yong’s expression grew somber, and he began to frown at Yang Yi, remaining silent.
"I planned to kill Wayne when the opportunity came, but today’s encounter with him was unexpected. Then, Wayne recognized me—not me, but my martial arts as being taught by you."
The plastic spoon in Zhang Yong’s hand snapped, but without changing his expression, he said, "Continue."
Yang Yi continued gravely, "I didn’t intend to kill him today; I’m still looking for the right moment. But when I saw Wayne, he tried to intimidate me. He just wanted to give me a scare, yet in my nervousness, I performed the Seven Star Flower-Stepping Move, and then Wayne said I was sent by you to kill him. I was shocked."
Zhang Yong said indifferently, "Start from the beginning. What did you say, what did you do? Tell me everything from the start."
Yang Yi began to recount everything in detail from the beginning up until the moment Wayne recognized his step technique.
Zhang Yong finally nodded and said impassively, "Makes sense he recognized it because I taught him Xingyi Fist; of course he’d recognize the Seven Star Flower-Stepping Move."
Yang Yi whispered, "He asked me to deliver a message to you. He said he’s running out of patience. If you want to kill him, you’d better go do it yourself."
Zhang Yong’s face was as still as water, and he said indifferently, "Is that all?"
"Wayne says he’s about to commit suicide. He’s waited for you for six years. If you don’t show up soon, he’ll kill himself. But he wants to kill you with his own hands, and you want to kill him with your own hands, so it’s best that you go see him."
Zhang Yong fell silent. His face showed no emotion, and his eyes were lifeless.
Yang Yi whispered, "I’m sorry. I really do want to kill Wayne, but I didn’t want to confront him now, nor did I want to expose you. But now I think it’s better to tell you all this."
Zhang Yong looked exhausted. He sighed, put down the broken spoon, leaned against the back of his chair, and then said quietly, "What’s meant to come will come."
Yang Yi said in a grave voice, "Wayne is in shackles. I think even if I made my move, I could kill him. If you want to kill him, I can help you."
Zhang Yong shook his head and said, "No, I’ll do it myself."
After murmuring this, Zhang Yong exhaled and said, "This is my feud with him – I’ll handle it myself. Actually, I should have expected he might commit suicide. Haha, if he commits suicide, then naturally he’ll be dead. But I can’t let him commit suicide. It’s ridiculous that he’s using suicide to coerce me into a fight to the death with him."
With a self-mocking laugh, Zhang Yong picked up a plastic fork and continued eating.
Yang Yi whispered, "I’m sorry. I didn’t expect things to end up like this."
Zhang Yong said expressionlessly, "No need to apologize. I hate your meddling, but this isn’t what you meant to do. You just lack experience. You don’t understand how dangerous the beast Wayne is. Now, this matter is mine to deal with – you don’t need to interfere any further."
"At least let me help you, Brother Yong. I don’t want to say we should face difficulties together, but I can’t stand by and do nothing if you’re in trouble."
Yang Yi spoke sincerely, and Zhang Yong looked up at him, then threw down his fork in annoyance and said, "What bothers me is people like you who have good intentions but end up causing harm. Seriously, I’m very annoyed by it. Do you think you’re helping me? Have you ever considered that I might not need your help at all?"
Zhang Yong finally began to show anger, and Yang Yi also started to feel a sense of relief in his heart. He wasn’t afraid of Zhang Yong’s outbursts; it was his indifferent facade that he found unsettling.
"Brother Yong, I now roughly understand what has happened. I get where you’re coming from, and I understand why you’d want to make Wayne’s fate even worse. But I still think it’s not worth sacrificing your own freedom just to punish the beast Wayne," Yang Yi said, his tone becoming serious.
"As your student, I don’t want to make any decisions for you. But as your friend, Brother Yong, I must do something, because I know you don’t like being in prison. Revenge is justified, but shouldn’t revenge mean making the enemy pay a steeper price?"
Zhang Yong was still visibly angry, staring straight into Yang Yi’s eyes. But this time, Yang Yi didn’t look away. They held each other’s gaze as Yang Yi whispered, "The fact that I interfered this time was right – Wayne really is going to commit suicide! If he dies, if he takes his own life silently in his cell, Brother Yong, what will you do? Do you want to kill him, or do you want him to commit suicide?"
Suddenly, Zhang Yong stood up, and in an uncontrollable rage, he swept the dishes on the table to the side. Then he said in a deep voice, "Tell the beast Wayne that I will come for him!"
Yang Yi exhaled, whispering, "But it needs to be in three months. I promised Owen. And Brother Yong, how will you get into the special ward?"
Zhang Yong said confidently, "I can get in if I want to. Tell Wayne to wait for me. I’ll break his neck with my own hands."
After saying this, Zhang Yong strode away. His steps were steady, but his upper body shook slightly.
