Chapter 1370: Chapter 1375: Not Enough
Yang Yi remained silent for a long time, contemplating Thomas’s words.
Thomas made a valid point, which is that the Grey-cloaked People might be deceiving Yang Yi. By making the lies absurdly unrealistic, no one questions them, so extremely outrageous claims tend to be more believable, which is a possibility.
The Grey-cloaked People are all racists, believing in white supremacy, which is likely, but they’re no good, just like the Cleaners aren’t.
After thinking for a long time, Yang Yi nodded, smiled at Thomas, and said, "What you said makes a lot of sense, I’ve been overthinking. Hmm, unless the Grey-cloaked People really show me that so-called Ark, I won’t believe any more of their nonsense."
Thomas chuckled and said, "That’s right."
Yang Yi waved his hand, saying in a deep voice, "So what should I do next? I’ve now established initial contact with the Grey-cloaked People, I can find them, but what should I do? To be honest, since Elvin... died, I haven’t received any mission instructions, so I don’t know what to do."
Thomas sighed and said, "You don’t need to rush to do anything. The most important thing is to reach the core leadership of the Grey-cloaked People, the more the better. Any detail, any person’s information, is what we need. Now, tell me everything you know, it’s all useful."
After pondering for a moment, Yang Yi nodded and said, "Of course, but this can’t be explained in just a few words. Could it be documented on paper, and then I can hand the paper materials to you? If you think that takes too long, hmm, finding a recorder to jot down what I say will also work."
Thomas nodded, and just as he was about to speak, a waiter who had just served a cup of coffee to the next table approached, bending over with a smile, saying, "Hello, Yang Yi, can we move to a quieter place inside to talk?"
Yang Yi looked at the waiter, a man in his forties, smiling professionally, and after saying those words, the Thomas sitting opposite him looked bewildered.
Yang Yi spread his hands at Thomas and said, "Is it necessary?"
Thomas said nothing, he just pulled out a bill and placed it on the table, then stood up, moved aside, took his hat from the coat rack, and left without looking back, without saying a word to Yang Yi.
Yang Yi shrugged, saying to the waiter who was still standing beside him, "Alright, it seems necessary."
"This way, please."
Yang Yi followed the waiter through the lobby, into a small compartment. After being seated at a dining table, the waiter did not leave but pulled out the chair opposite Yang Yi and sat down.
Yang Yi genuinely thought the waiter was just a messenger and that someone else was coming to meet him.
"I am Thomas, the real Thomas. It’s nice to meet you."
The waiter did not shake hands with Yang Yi. After the introduction, he smiled politely at Yang Yi.
Yang Yi spread his hands and said, "Uh, to be honest, this kind of meeting can really be unsettling."
Thomas, or rather the real Thomas, nodded, "Yes, I apologize for that, but I had to meet with you in this way because I was genuinely worried that you might have been convinced by the Grey-cloaked People. Hmm, you can understand that, right?"
"Of course, I understand."
Thomas nodded and then sighed lightly, saying, "I originally didn’t want to reveal myself, but today I wanted to see what you would say and observe your attitude, to analyze whether you’ve really turned to the Grey-cloaked People. If that were the case, our loss would be severe without any gain."
"Why did you change your mind then?"
"Because of the way you conducted the conversation, it was too straightforward. Hmm, the fake Thomas didn’t know many things and couldn’t handle it. In fact, I think he did well enough, whether in controlling expressions or changing topics, but this wasn’t about his skill. He just didn’t know many things, so he couldn’t handle your too-direct inquiries."
"Yes, he didn’t know, so he couldn’t answer my questions, admitting or denying was difficult."
Yang Yi chuckled, and Thomas chuckled as well, then Yang Yi suddenly said, "So why did you reveal yourself then?"
Thomas sighed first and then helplessly smiled, saying, "Because you forced me. First, I knew you didn’t believe the fake Thomas’s words, you weren’t doubting him; you were convinced he was lying to you. Then, you decided to break away, and I think once you break away, you won’t be able to contact the Cleaners again, so I had no choice but to appear."
Yang Yi put away his smile and said, "You figured it out."
"Yes, I figured it out. The fake one didn’t see it, he was still talking to you following the given plan, but I knew I had to come out to stop you from leaving. If I really let you leave, it would be foolish, and our sacrifice and efforts would become a joke."
Yang Yi waved his hand and said, "I’m not qualified to say this, but I must say your approach is very risky."
"No, I had to do this. Hmm, in fact, it was only after I fully believed you hadn’t betrayed that I was willing to reveal myself to speak with you personally."
"Why did you believe me then?"
"Because of your forceful way of talking, if you had turned to the Grey-cloaked People, you wouldn’t have directly shown your doubts. You want the truth now and haven’t decided to fully commit to either side, so I had no choice but to appear."
Yang Yi chuckled and said, "Alright, can we start the real conversation now?"
"Wait a minute, why did you think the person pretending to be me just now was untrustworthy? Just out of curiosity, can you tell me?"
Yang Yi was silent for a moment, then he said in a low voice, "Because of faith, Elvin’s faith, when he knew it was hard to die, yet decided to appear in front of the Grey-cloaked People, I knew he had faith. And the person pretending to be you earlier, everything he said was not enough to be faith, at least not enough for Elvin to sacrifice himself for. Rebuilding the new world order is a grand goal, but it’s not enough."
Thomas frowned and asked, "Just that?"
"Isn’t that enough? Alright, let me tell you, during the Huaxia Anti-Japanese War, a Huaxia person pretending to defect to the Japanese army infiltrated their ranks as an undercover agent. He sent out a lot of crucial intelligence. Later, he was suspected, and the Japanese army captured him and tortured him for eighteen days. He didn’t say a word until the Japanese captured another person, thought him innocent, and released him, trusting him more and allowing him to obtain more intelligence. What I am saying, does it remind you of anything?"
Thomas nodded slightly, and Yang Yi said in a deep voice, "Yes, that Huaxia person had faith, so he endured the torture and refused to yield. Then I thought of Elvin, although I don’t know what Elvin believed in, something as vague as rebuilding the new world order is clearly not enough, so I either think Elvin was a fool, or the fake Thomas was lying, and I choose the latter."
