Chapter 1368: Chapter 1373: The New World Order
If the Cleaners don’t contact me, then I should take the initiative to contact them.
After watching Anton leave, Yang Yi took out his phone and dialed a number.
With many lice, you stop worrying about bites; with many debts, you stop worrying about them. Now Yang Yi is not too concerned about being eavesdropped on, whether it’s by the Grey-cloaked People or the Cleaners.
Of course, not being worried depends on who he’s speaking with. Conversations with own people should still be cautious, but Yang Yi isn’t afraid of the Cleaners eavesdropping on him being overheard by the Grey-cloaked People, and vice versa.
Yang Yi called Elvin, but as soon as he dialed the number, he immediately hung up.
Elvin is already dead. He exposed himself willingly, delivered to the Grey-cloaked People and died after being tortured. Such a significant event, Yang Yi certainly wouldn’t forget.
It’s just the power of routine—every time Yang Yi would reach out to the Cleaners, he would call Elvin. So he merely acted out of habit.
Thinking of Elvin’s permanent absence is indeed something that makes Yang Yi quite sorrowful.
Not only sorrowful for Elvin’s death and his encounter, but Yang Yi is saddened by the fact that many people he knows seem to have really died, and doesn’t know when it will be his turn.
Complex thoughts briefly flashed through his mind, Yang Yi dialed another number, and this time, someone picked up quickly, only it was a completely unfamiliar number.
After mentioning the meeting place, Yang Yi stood up and settled the bill, then started heading to the location designated by the Cleaners.
Yang Yi made up his mind, and behind what seemed like a mundane action is his determination to clear things up with the Cleaners.
Without consulting anyone, Yang Yi felt he needed to have a serious talk with the Cleaners’ people. At the very least, today he needed to find out what the Cleaners were up to.
On a small scale, it’s about understanding the Cleaners’ goals. On a larger scale, it’s about knowing what the Cleaners’ beliefs are.
Much of what the Cleaners do can only be explained by steadfast belief, like Elvin’s voluntary death. To understand one thing: it’s relatively easy for someone to willingly die. The difficulty is in knowing the desire for death might be unfulfilled but still daring to step forward.
Not having walked too far, Yang Yi met the person he had agreed to see in a very ordinary café in New York.
An elderly man who looked to be in his sixties or seventies.
"Hello, I’m Thomas. I will be your contact from now on, your only contact. Please have a seat."
Just like meeting ordinary friends, without those mysterious password exchange routines. Yang Yi stretched out his hand to shake Thomas’s and then sat down opposite him.
"You’ve reached out to us. Is there some progress or difficulty?"
Yang Yi thought for a moment, then said, "There has been some progress, and simultaneously, I’ve encountered difficulties."
"Please tell me."
"I met Bruno. Based on my observations, Bruno is a significant figure within the Grey-cloaked People. I talked a lot with him, which can be considered quite a harvest. He trusts me."
"Oh, that’s very good progress."
Thomas smiled but didn’t seem particularly pleased, so Yang Yi knew Thomas wasn’t surprised by his current progress.
Yang Yi thought for a moment, then said, "Aren’t you interested in knowing where we met?"
Thomas shrugged and said, "Regardless of where you met Bruno, in fact, this is the first time I’ve heard his name, but it’s already meaningless. After meeting you, Bruno will have left there forever. What I care more about is what you two talked about."
Yang Yi and Thomas locked eyes briefly, and then he said softly, "How about I first talk about the difficulties I’ve encountered?"
"Very good, please go ahead."
Yang Yi had thought about how to be indirect but now realized all tactics actually aren’t very meaningful. If one wishes to touch core topics, one should be straightforward. Indirect approaches will never reach core issues.
"The biggest difficulty is my confidence is starting to shake. After talking with Bruno, I learned a lot about the history between the Grey-cloaked People and the Cleaners, so now I need to clarify one thing: what exactly do the Cleaners want to do? Can you tell me?"
Thomas exhaled and said, "It’s rare for anyone to infiltrate the Grey-cloaked People’s upper echelons, even making contact with their high-level is difficult. And whoever does reach this step ultimately joins the Grey-cloaked People. We can’t figure out where the problem lies."
Yang Yi remained silent, while Thomas smiled and said, "I’m glad you bring up this confusion today, because it means you haven’t been completely brainwashed by the Grey-cloaked People. This is what we want. Okay, now tell me what you want to know."
"I already said, I want to know the Cleaners’ goals."
"Our goals? That question is too broad. Can you be more specific?"
Yang Yi hesitated for a moment, then said, "Alright, I now know about the Ark, about revelations, and about aliens and Armageddon. I want to know what the Cleaners want to do."
Yang Yi felt he had already stated all the keywords, but Thomas’s face changed dramatically listening, then waved his hands repeatedly, saying: "Wait a minute, what are you talking about? Aliens? And the Ark and revelations? What exactly are you saying, can you explain in detail?"
If Thomas is playing dumb, he would be insulting Yang Yi’s intelligence, but the issue is if what Yang Yi said is true, then Thomas feigning ignorance is incorrect. So either it’s not true at all, or Thomas’s level is too low to know about these things.
Yang Yi struggled to understand. He chose to be straightforward, forcing Thomas to directly answer his questions, but Thomas’s answer was completely different from what Yang Yi anticipated.
With a deep sigh, Yang Yi said helplessly, "Okay, I request someone of a higher rank to talk with me. This matter is very important. Sorry, I don’t mean anything else, but I really need someone who knows what I’m talking about to speak with me."
Thomas shrugged again, then said seriously, "Well, I’m afraid you won’t find anyone higher ranking than me because I am one of the Elders’ Council members of the Cleaners, meaning the Cleaners have no secrets from me. If I don’t know, then no one else does either."
Yang Yi was taken aback again. Thomas smiled and said, "Is it unbelievable? It’s quite normal. Given how crucial your role is, we certainly need an Elders’ Council member to personally communicate with you."
Yang Yi lightly tapped his head a few times, then shook his head and said, "Wait a minute, my mind is a bit scattered. Can you tell me, is there really such a thing as the revelation?"
"I honestly don’t know what you’re talking about!"
Yang Yi took a deep breath and then changed his question, saying: "Okay, then tell me, have the Cleaners prepared nuclear bombs, intending to start a nuclear war, do they?"
Thomas looked serious, placed his hands on the table, then stared into Yang Yi’s eyes and said, "We have nuclear bombs, but they’re not to start a nuclear war; they’re for rebuilding the world order!"
