Chapter 1231: Chapter 1236: Just Crazy

Revelation. Yang Yi heard this word once again, and now he was particularly sensitive to it.

Some things were already quite clear by now. First, Elvin had said the word "Revelation" right before his death, and that word had drawn Aaron’s extreme attention.

A word significant enough for Elvin to mention, and one that could command Aaron’s intense focus, was undoubtedly of great import to the Grey-cloaked People as well.

Of course, the "Revelation" Annastasia spoke of might not hold much deeper meaning. She could have just blurted it out, something about how someone had made what looked like a mark somewhere. A mark that, when seen by others, would reveal its significance. If that mark were treated as a secret code, or a symbol to initiate some event, then interpreting Yarebin’s drawings as a "Revelation" would indeed seem reasonable.

"What did I just say? Were you talking about the word ’Revelation’?"

Yang Yi nodded, clapped his hands, and said, "If Yarebin isn’t just some idle old man, then what do the two symbols he painted on the Statue of Liberty mean? Let’s think it through. The sickle-and-hammer symbol, combined with the nuclear bomb emblem—this is a clear statement, isn’t it? It signifies the Soviet Union’s nuclear assault. What do you think?"

Anton nodded and said, "The Soviet Union did indeed develop nuclear suitcases, with yields of around twenty kilotons. If used in a city, we all know what kind of consequences that would cause. So, who would use these nuclear suitcases? It’s obvious. The number one choice would be the Black Devil."

"Alright. If Yarebin can deploy a suitcase nuke and has the capability to bring it here, then he..."

Yang Yi trailed off, waved his hand, and said, "This is all pointless talk. What I’m really saying is Yarebin, after getting old, suddenly becoming frivolous and showing off his skills to the Americans. Hmm, let’s get back on track. Yarebin wouldn’t do meaningless things. So, what’s the significance of spray-painting graffiti on the Statue of Liberty?"

What’s the significance?

It doesn’t seem to have any, no matter how you look at it. If it’s a secret code, it could’ve been drawn in some inconspicuous place quietly. Why go to such a challenging location? Why choose a place bound to garner heightened attention? Why paint in a location destined to provoke varied and over-the-top interpretations?

It doesn’t make sense. However you look at it, it feels like showing off, like mocking the Americans.

Everyone turned to look at Anton. Anton’s expression wasn’t good. He averted his gaze, avoiding eye contact with Yang Yi and the others, and murmured, "I’m ultimately not a true Black Devil. I mean, I didn’t join Black Devil at the proper time. Maybe Black Devil has some agreement, and I just don’t know about it..."

Yang Yi coughed twice and said, "Alright, let’s interpret it this way. Black Devil must have some internal agreement, something like: if a particular symbol appears at a particular time and place, it signifies that Black Devil has to act. Looking at it that way, certain things suddenly make sense—like why they had to do this in a place bound to cause a sensation."

Being able to provoke a worldwide sensation means garnering global attention. With attention naturally comes media coverage. Once the media reports it, the message can spread around the globe. And for a group of individuals who didn’t leave any contact information when parting ways, this method does seem like an effective way to gather everyone together.

With this line of thinking, the question turns to what Yarebin wanted to do. But the problem is, if we’re just guessing blindly, the truth will remain elusive.

The behavioral patterns of ordinary people might be relatively easy to deduce. Their motivations can be predicted with some effort. But Black Devil and Yarebin? If someone could truly guess their intentions, it would be nothing short of miraculous.

Unfortunately, Anton’s method of joining Black Devil wasn’t orthodox. It’s like how, in ancient times, someone might be posthumously awarded a noble title or official position after their death—something akin to being posthumously decorated or declared a hero.

Does posthumous recognition matter? Saying it doesn’t is fair; it holds no meaning for the deceased personally, as they didn’t enjoy it while alive. But saying it matters is also reasonable; it can serve to inspire future followers who revere heroes or motivate the families and descendants of the deceased.

But Anton’s posthumous "Black Devil" title is significant yet ineffective, as Anton still lacked a true understanding of Black Devil.

Annastasia cautiously proposed, "Gather all the Black Devil operatives to pull off a major operation together?"

Annastasia’s suggestion was reasonable but lacked meaningful insight.

Yang Yi said in frustration, "I can’t figure it out. Unless we could ask those Black Devil operatives directly. Anton, do you still have contact with them?"

Anton said quietly, "We’re in contact. After Yarebin personally announced my admission into Black Devil, they’ve kept in touch with me—but only the bare minimum of communication. Now that Yarebin is dead, someone will notify me because as a Black Devil, you’re required to know. Beyond that, I don’t know much else."

"So, who contacts you? Can we ask them?"

Anton shook his head and replied, "If I’m supposed to know, they’ll tell me on their own. If they don’t want me to know, asking won’t help."

Alright then. If blind guesses don’t work and questions yield no answers, the only hope left is that Black Devil might reveal more to Anton.

Yang Yi said with a troubled expression, "How about reasoning backward from Aaron’s behavior? Don’t forget, Aaron was once a KGB mole, so he would know the true significance of certain symbols. If he saw these symbols, he would naturally focus on them."

Annastasia shook her head and said, "That’s too far-fetched. Even if Aaron was a mole, it doesn’t mean he’d understand Black Devil’s symbols. Nobody except Black Devil knows what they mean."

Yang Yi turned to Anton again and smiled bitterly. "Explain yourself. Even if you don’t know, your guesses are still closer to the truth than ours, right?"

Anton let out a breath and spoke in a low voice, "The Black Devil... is proud. We rarely use things like covert symbols to convey messages. If a sign appears where everyone can see it, its greatest meaning lies in what it explicitly states. For example, if a nuclear bomb symbol is displayed, it means they’re really going to detonate a nuclear bomb. I’m telling you, and there’s nothing you can do about it."

Yang Yi exhaled deeply and said, "That’s not pride. That’s arro..."

"Yes, it’s arrogance. Is that a problem?"

"No, it’s not."

Yang Yi took a deep breath and said, "Does this mean we need to shift our thinking again? If this isn’t a Revelation but an ultimate ultimatum, does that mean the Black Devil plans to use a nuclear bomb in the United States? Is that... possible?"
