Chapter 1213: Chapter 1218: Actor or Spectator
Refusing to speak, Elvin wasn’t dead, but he just wouldn’t open his mouth.
He wouldn’t even let out a single scream.
During interrogations, regardless of how skilled the interrogator or how brutal the methods, the last thing anyone wants to encounter is someone like this—someone who refuses to speak.
Elvin wasn’t an interrogation subject that required civilized handling. The Grey-cloaked People’s strategy was to get him to talk as quickly as possible. No matter what Elvin said, as long as he opened his mouth, he’d soon spill everything he knew.
They weren’t afraid of Elvin spewing nonsense, weren’t afraid he’d make up stories, weren’t afraid he’d prepare a series of lies to outsmart the torture methods. As long as he talked, the Grey-cloaked People had plenty of ways to verify the truth and extract the real facts.
But the issue was that Elvin wasn’t talking, even though only five minutes had passed.
You had to understand, the pain Elvin endured in those five minutes was something no normal person could bear—five minutes of torment completely intolerable both physically and mentally.
The interrogation had to be paused; otherwise, Elvin would die. But the problem was, Elvin had just spoken to Yang Yi.
Elvin spoke to Yang Yi, and that meant he wanted to talk. It also meant Yang Yi had already managed to pry open a tiny crack in his psychological defenses. That’s why the interrogation immediately resumed after Yang Yi left.
But now it was clear—the Grey-cloaked People’s strategy had failed. It had failed completely.
The current situation was far from what had been envisioned.
Aaron angrily turned off the monitoring screen. Sitting in his swivel chair, he slowly spun around to face Yang Yi, speaking in a low voice: "It’s impossible to make him talk quickly now."
Yang Yi hesitated for a moment, deciding he should exchange some words with Aaron. So he nodded and said, "Yes, we’ll have to try another approach."
"Yeah, looks like this is going to take some time. I’m leaving now—this is on you."
Aaron got up, and Yang Yi asked in surprise, "On me?"
"That’s right, it’s on you. While I’m not here, you’re in charge. If there’s any progress in the interrogation, they’ll report directly to you. If there’s no progress—and there probably won’t be any progress in the short term—you can keep an eye on the process and tell them what to do."
Yang Yi shook his head slightly and said, "No, I don’t understand why you’re putting this on me."
Aaron chuckled and replied, "No particular reason. I simply believe you’ll do a better job than the others. Maybe I’ll come by again tomorrow if I have time. If not, I’ll just wait for your report. Alright then, goodbye."
Aaron walked to the door, then turned back suddenly and said, "Oh, one more thing. You’re safe here, but we can’t rule out the possibility of someone risking everything to rescue Elvin or even trying to kill you. I’ve stationed a lot of personnel here, but if things really spiral out of control, someone will be assigned to get you out in time."
Yang Yi said in a serious tone, "Shouldn’t we relocate?"
Aaron shook his head slightly and said softly, "Sorry, that’s not possible for now. We need to observe the cleaners’ subsequent reactions. At the moment, we can’t find a place more secure than here. We have to admit a hard truth: in the United States, the cleaners are indeed stronger than us."
Yang Yi sighed and said, "Wait a minute, don’t leave in such a hurry. I have a lot of matters to handle right now. How am I supposed to contact the outside world? At least give me a phone. Also, if my identity is exposed, I’ll face the cleaners’ frenzied vengeance. How am I supposed to operate under that threat? And don’t forget, I have a fiancée waiting for me in New York—am I supposed to disappear forever and never see her again?"
Aaron shrugged and said, "These issues will be resolved soon. Next time I come back, I’ll handle them for you. For now, just focus on overseeing Elvin’s interrogation. Can you do that?"
What else could Yang Yi say? It seemed he’d suddenly been entrusted by Aaron or, perhaps, earned the Grey-cloaked People’s trust. But upon closer inspection, what exactly did "oversee" even mean?
Regardless, Aaron was displaying goodwill, and the Grey-cloaked People were expressing their trust in him. Naturally, Yang Yi accepted the goodwill and agreed to shoulder the trust.
Aaron left, and now only Yang Yi and Bonnie remained in the room.
Bonnie looked at Yang Yi, and Yang Yi looked at Bonnie. The two stared at each other for a long time before Bonnie finally said softly, "You should rest. There’s no need for you to keep monitoring this place all the time."
Yang Yi let out a small sigh and said quietly to Bonnie, "What do you think?"
Bonnie shook her head and said, "I don’t know. What do you think?"
Yang Yi forced a bitter smile and said, "What do I think? I don’t know. It feels like my life has just been rewritten. I mean, I thought I understood my own life, but it’s been rewritten—how much of my memories are real? How much are just things others designed for me to see? I used to believe in seeing is believing, but now... now..."
Seeing is believing, my ass. These days, does seeing really mean believing?
It’s just like watching a movie—it looks real, but in reality? In reality, it’s just actors performing in front of a green screen.
Yang Yi truly didn’t know whether he was the actor in front of the green screen or the spectator sitting in the theater. The information Aaron had just revealed was overwhelming, far too impactful.
The most infuriating part was that Aaron only spoke in half-truths. He had shared the shocking news but wouldn’t provide the whole truth.
Yang Yi sighed again and said to Bonnie, "I can’t think too much about it right now. I need to go back and sleep for a while. Could you please push me back to my room? I need to rest—I need time to think things through..."
Bonnie pushed Yang Yi back to the infirmary and helped him lie down on the bed. This clearly wasn’t the time to talk too much, so once Bonnie had settled Yang Yi down, she went to take a shower and then lay on the bed beside him to rest.
Yang Yi didn’t dare to reflect on anything right now. He just wanted to sleep—a good, deep sleep.
Eventually, Yang Yi did fall asleep. It was a difficult process, but he couldn’t allow himself to sink into a state of despair. He couldn’t let himself dwell on Elvin being tortured, his mother or father, or anything else. At this moment, he was too fragile. Thinking too much might drive him insane.
Yang Yi slept for a long time, until the next day when knocking at the door woke him up.
Bonnie stood beside Yang Yi, and after regaining his clarity for a moment, Yang Yi nodded and said, "Go open the door."
Bonnie opened the door, and a middle-aged man whom Yang Yi had never seen before walked in. He approached Yang Yi’s bed, nodded softly at him, and then said in a low voice, "I’m in charge of Elvin’s interrogation. The interrogation has already lasted twelve hours, and he still hasn’t spoken. We’re considering the use of Truth Serum now, but we’ll need your approval to proceed."
