Chapter 1143: Chapter 1148: Greetings Not From the Sky

Larry Bell is a workaholic and a highly routine person.

He wakes up at ten o’clock every morning, doesn’t eat breakfast, works until noon for a sumptuous lunch, rests until one o’clock, and then works straight through until five in the afternoon.

He starts dinner at six in the evening, but the timing of dinner is not very fixed because he often needs to attend various banquets. However, by ten o’clock at night, it’s basically Larry Bell’s evening work hours.

He works from ten until two in the morning, has a light snack—always the healthy kind—before he goes to bed.

Generally speaking, Larry Bell’s resting time is around three in the morning.

Even though it’s a critical period for Bell Securities, for Larry Bell, who has spent his life battling through countless storms, the minor turbulence he faces now hardly counts as a significant issue. Although it’s indeed somewhat threatening, he could easily suppress it with a move of his hand, and it’s certainly not worth changing his routine over.

Moreover, it’s already two or three in the morning, and even if Larry Bell could still work, he would have to consider other people, like the TV stations and newspapers. They are certainly not interested in staying up late with him to weather a mediocre crisis.

So Larry Bell will definitely rest on time because he’s a well-known workaholic, and famously regular in his lifestyle.

Assassins love targets with regular routines.

Yang Yi and Anton are not professional killers, but their fondness for highly routine targets is second to none.

Yang Yi and Anton take off at half past three in the morning, with a thirty-minute flight to the Bell Securities office building, a time when almost everyone is asleep, which is relatively the safest moment.

The helicopter flies forward along the planned route, with Yang Yi and Anton sitting in the back row, and after sitting quietly for a while, Anton suddenly begins to hum a song.

At first, it was just humming, but then Anton began to sing out loud. Although he wasn’t wearing a helmet and thus had no communication headset, the pilot still heard his singing and curiously turned to look at him.

Anton was wearing a mask that only exposed his eyes, so his voice sounded a bit muffled when he sang. Yang Yi thought the muffled voice was the reason why the pilot turned around.

As a CIA special operations pilot, he had seen all sorts of people and things; just singing would not arouse his curiosity. It was the person who still wore the mask on the plane and refused to take it off, singing in Russian, who could slightly pique his interest.

Yang Yi took off his helmet and said in a low voice to Anton, "What are you singing?"

Anton stopped singing and then replied to Yang Yi, "The Soviet Airborne Troops’ song. My initial parachute jumps were learned with the airborne troops. Whenever a new recruit is about to make their first jump, they would sing this song. It’s a standard number."

"Not the ’Greeting from the Sky’?"

Yang Yi knew it wasn’t; he just couldn’t help but mention it.

’Greeting from the Sky’ is the Russian Airborne Troops’ song, not the Soviet Airborne Troops’ song, and although Yang Yi knew the tune, he just couldn’t help but ask.

"No."

Anton paused for a moment, then he said in a deep voice, "I know that song, it sounds good, and I can sing it."

"Oh, you can sing it?"

"But I don’t sing it."

"Hmm, I was just asking."

Anton took a breath and then looked at Yang Yi, speaking in a muffled tone, "Do you know what song we usually sing? Hmm, I mean the kind where we know it’s a one-way trip, when you know you’ll never return, do you know what we sing then?"

"What?"

Anton smiled and said, "We don’t sing, we’re accustomed to silence."

We’re referring to the Black Devil, Yang Yi knew, so he tactfully kept his mouth shut.

Anton continued: "So, who sings then?"

"Who?"

"The soldiers."

"Ugh."

"When they start singing, they forget many things, such as the fact that they are about to die. When many people sing together, they can forget their fear to some extent, or perhaps they’ll stop feeling afraid as they sing."

Yang Yi was curious why he was discussing with Anton what songs to sing at this moment.

Anton looked down and said, "Those soldiers, they’ll sing their own military songs, the first one definitely. So what will the paratroopers sing? Of course, it’s the Paratrooper’s Song, not the Russian one, but the Soviet Union Paratrooper’s Song."

"Uh..."

Anton looked at Yang Yi again and then slowly said, "I took part in the Chernobyl nuclear plant rescue. The accident was covered up, so I was the closest one... a trainee. Before the infantry headed to Chernobyl, I had already arrived there with an investigation team. They started singing on the plane, starting with the Paratrooper’s Song."

Anton turned his head to the side, looking out the window, then he said in a deep voice: "Because of the paratroopers’ quick response, they were the first to depart. One of the paratrooper lieutenants started the song, and then everyone began to sing. Do you know what they all sang?"

"What?"

"The Paratrooper’s Song, ’If War Comes Tomorrow’, and finally, a ’Holy War’. It sounded terrible because some were crying. Only I didn’t sing, because I’m used to silence..."

Yang Yi spread his hands, and Anton continued to look out the window: "But later, much later, when I thought it very likely that jumping would turn me into a splatter of flesh, I also started to sing, because I thought it was indeed a good coping method."

"What happened to those people afterward?"

Anton looked at Yang Yi and in a muffled tone, said: "The paratroopers all died, half the expert group died as well, but there were only four of them to begin with. They knew what to do, but time didn’t allow it, so beyond what you’ve been told, actually, many more people died. I was fine, because I was too valuable."

"And then?"

"There was no ’then’. I just went to take a look. From afar, I confirmed which experts really tried their best. Other people arrived later, and I could withdraw."

Anton hummed a song again, but after a few notes, he stopped and said: "I don’t know why, this time I can’t help but remember that young lieutenant."

"Uh, don’t, that’s a bad feeling."

Just then, the pilot suddenly said: "We’ve reached the target area above."

Upon hearing the pilot’s words, Anton put on a night vision goggles and then turned on the radio. After doing all this, he pushed open the cabin door and looked down.

After confirming the location, Anton once again looked at Yang Yi in a muffled tone: "Do you know what we’re going to do?"

Anton stood up, grabbed the cabin door with both hands, then he bellowed: "Ura!"

With a loud shout, Anton leaped out, so swiftly that Yang Yi didn’t even have the chance to remind him to be careful.

After Anton jumped out, the pilot said indifferently through the headset: "Buddy, why’s there a Russian guy?"

Yang Yi smiled and said, "Not a Russian, a Soviet."
