Chapter 1083: Chapter 1088: Traps and Counter-Traps
Yang Yi’s gaze was calm, yet it betrayed a thick aura of murderous intent.
Bonnie’s eyes constricted slightly before she let out a sigh and said, "Are you an assassin?"
Yang Yi closed his eyes, then shook his head and said, "I’m not an assassin, but I possess an assassin’s heart. Even if I don’t have an assassin’s heart, I have an assassin’s instincts. And if I don’t have the instincts, at the very least, I closely resemble an assassin called Cupid."
Opening his eyes, the killing intent in Yang Yi’s eyes had vanished, and he spoke very calmly, "What am I afraid of? I’m afraid of another me, someone highly similar to myself. When I realize he might think and solve problems the same way I do, I instinctively feel fear."
Bonnie took a breath and said, "My God, you’re such a proud person."
"Proud?"
"You’re not afraid of anything, only of someone like yourself. Heh, such an intense fear of your own shadow means you must think you’re omnipotent. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be afraid of another you. If you thought you were useless and couldn’t do anything, of course, you wouldn’t fear another you."
Yang Yi laughed and said, "Perhaps you’re right; deep down, I am quite a proud person. But right now, I’m concerned about whether that Cupid is already near me."
Bonnie spread her hands and said, "Please, all this is just your speculation."
Yang Yi spoke very gravely, "It’s not speculation, but inference. There’s an essential difference between guessing and inferring. Guessing is based on subjective imagination, while inferring is deducing what might happen based on clues or logic. So do you think what I’m saying is just an unattainable fantasy, or is it possible to achieve?"
Bonnie didn’t take long to think before nodding, "I admit, your inference can be realized, but do you really think someone can achieve everything you’ve said?"
Yang Yi replied calmly, "It can be done because when I think about it seriously, I feel I could do it. And since I could, Cupid could too."
After speaking, Yang Yi pointed at Bonnie and said, "You came with me, and we went from the airport directly to the safe house. Moreover, I haven’t been extra careful in hiding my tracks because I wanted the CIA to see me with you. Hence, the likelihood of Cupid finding the safe house is quite high. Every member of the Organization of Water disguises themselves when they come and go from here, only the two of us didn’t, so if Cupid has targeted you, I wouldn’t find it strange."
Bonnie smiled and said, "Did you just figure all this out?"
Yang Yi nodded and said, "Yes, I used to think that since Cupid was as seriously injured as I am, he couldn’t move. But just now, after Aaron said it wasn’t the CIA tracking me, I had to consider who else it could be besides Cupid. I had to face reality, and then I realized I had overlooked the most likely possibility."
Despite no clear signs of being followed, Yang Yi felt increasingly uneasy. It had nothing to do with stress resilience or some sixth sense, but rather it was Yang Yi’s inner belief that if he were Cupid, he could accomplish the task of taking himself out.
Then, Yang Yi finally came to realize that this Cupid truly could do it.
What’s the worst part? The worst is that last time, the assassin called Cupid poisoned his food.
Yang Yi almost always dined out, and he didn’t have dozens of bodyguards surrounding him to check everything he was about to eat. That was just one aspect; if the plan was to settle matters with a gunshot, there were no issues at all, as Yang Yi didn’t have dozens of bodyguards to form a human wall around him.
Danger has always been present, but exactly what kind of danger remains unpredictable. After realizing there were a multitude of ways he could be eliminated, it would be strange if Yang Yi didn’t feel frightened.
Perhaps subconsciously he had already sensed the crisis, but for various reasons, he ignored it—maybe due to carelessness or perhaps avoidance. And these possibilities truly exist; anyone could encounter the same situation.
Now, having finally grasped the nature of the problem, Yang Yi, while breaking out in a cold sweat, of course needs to think about how to solve the issue.
To deal with enemies lurking in the shadows, since he can’t take the offensive, he can only set traps to lure them out.
Continuing to put himself in their shoes, Yang Yi found it too difficult, because if he were Cupid, he would certainly not repeat the same mistake after being tricked once.
Especially upon seeing that the target is only accompanied by two beautiful women, with no one else for protection, Yang Yi believed he would be vigilant rather than considering it an opportunity to strike.
The reason is simple—it’s just too abnormal.
When a target knows they are being watched, instead of arranging for a large number of protectors, they dismiss everyone and only keep two beautiful women by their side; such behavior must be treated as a trap, even if it isn’t one.
Thinking this, Yang Yi let out a long sigh and said, "We’ve got it wrong, we’ve really got it wrong!"
Bonnie whispered, "Yes, if you want to lure the assassin out, the easier it looks to succeed, the more vigilant the assassin will become."
Yang Yi smiled and said, "Right, to draw the killer out, I must have a lot of bodyguards around me, and then leave a flaw that is hard for the assassin to find. Only then might he really make a move. The more confident people are, the less they will trust an opportunity that seems too easy; only opportunities they have created themselves are exploitable."
Bonnie asked in a serious tone, "What’s your plan? Where will you find people to protect you?"
Yang Yi pondered for a moment and replied, "It’s urgent over at Justin’s side, and I don’t want to use people from the Organization of Water. CIA’s resources are easy to obtain, and they have significant influence. Although using CIA resources might have some repercussions, Cupid should be aware of my competition with Nicholas, and also know about my relationship with the CIA. If they protect me, he would probably believe it."
After some thought, Bonnie said, "Just protection? How about creating a false trap? Show the killer that the lack of protection around you beforehand was just an illusion, let him discover your real security measures, and make him believe that you did this to lure him out."
Yang Yi burst into laughter and said in Chinese, "Great minds think alike."
Bonnie shook her head and said, "I can’t understand, I haven’t studied Chinese specifically."
Yang Yi laughed heartily and said, "Stop pretending, you understand Chinese. We both know what the other is trying to do, but we can certainly relax a bit when it’s just the two of us. Wouldn’t it be nicer to take it easy?"
Bonnie’s face turned slightly unnatural as she spoke seriously, "How did you find out? Did I do something wrong?"
Yang Yi continued smiling and replied in Chinese, "No, your reactions and movements are very natural, with no giveaways. I just don’t believe the janitors would place someone by my side who doesn’t understand Chinese, that’s all."
