Chapter 1014: Chapter 1119 Conditions
Yang Yi put himself in a disadvantaged position, but he dared to look Aaron in the eye and directly refuse him.
"You want me to join the Operations Section, saying you need an Asian, anyone with sense would understand you plan to send me to the East, right?"
Without waiting for Aaron to reply, Yang Yi continued: "Actually, I’m not American, I have no interest in ideological matters, frankly speaking, I lack patriotic sentiment. Now that I almost have everything, you want me to abandon it all and go to East Asia as a spy, how could I possibly agree."
After saying this, Yang Yi sighed softly and said in a low voice: "Now that we’ve come this far, we can be more honest with each other. Yes, I’m in Management Section, where I can continue to have everything I have now without taking any risks. If I join the Operations Section, I’ll have to take risks. Why should I?"
This time Aaron didn’t say anything. His expression was calm, but after two minutes of silence, he finally said gravely, "Do you think it’s time to just enjoy life?"
Yang Yi also became silent, lowering his head and, after a long silence, finally whispered: "You’ve seen right through me."
Aaron just smiled faintly without replying, and Yang Yi fell silent again.
If it were an ordinary person, no, anyone with insufficient experience and outlook, they would have been convinced by Yang Yi’s words just now.
When Aaron mentioned needing an Asian, it was inevitable that Yang Yi would be sent to East Asia, and most likely to Huaxia. This was apparent without analysis; any sensible person would understand at once.
Yang Yi said he had money, and he didn’t want to go to East Asia to be a spy. To ordinary people, this excuse seemed perfectly flawless, but Aaron didn’t buy it at all. With just one retort, he revealed Yang Yi’s true nature.
For someone who has established a certain position in the underworld, accumulated a huge fortune, and now joined the CIA as a secret agent, how could such a person settle down to enjoy life peacefully and avoid danger in favor of a wealthy existence.
It’s not about not wanting, but not being able to. Aaron knew that if Yang Yi lost his current power and influence, no amount of money could safeguard him.
Others might not know, those unfamiliar with the underworld might not understand, but Aaron understood how the underworld worked; hence, Yang Yi couldn’t deceive him.
Finally, after a long silence, Yang Yi said gravely, "I have nothing left to say. To continue lying to you would be an insult to your intelligence. I must admit, you are much more formidable than I imagined, but sir, I... really cannot join the Operations Section."
Aaron’s expression softened a bit as he asked softly, "Can you tell me why?"
Without hesitation, Yang Yi replied: "The Management Section can offer me something you can’t, first is the degree of freedom. The Management Section lacks overseas operational authority; they also lack manpower, but I have people. I have a certain position in the intelligence world across Europe and the world. As an intelligence broker, I have seized Deyo Mather’s legacy; I’m also taking over his arms business. With all this, I’m indispensable to the Management Section and I can rely on it for CIA’s support. That’s my goal."
Aaron smiled and said, "Continue."
"But in the Operations Section, I lose all my advantages and also become a newcomer competing within the Operations Section. Sir, competing for interests between the Management and Operations Sections is one thing, but competing with other veterans in the Operations Section is another."
Aaron sighed and pointed to his head, looking helpless, and said, "Still classic underworld thinking. Don’t you understand yet, the CIA is the CIA, not an underworld interest consortium. Here, orders are more important than interests. To be precise, do you know what the biggest interest of a CIA agent is?"
Yang Yi paused, then said: "Not money... I understand now!"
Yang Yi then had a look of realization and laughed, saying, "You mean power, right? But sir, I believe in the face of money, everything else takes a back seat."
Aaron spoke indifferently, "It seems money is what you value most."
Yang Yi shook his head and laughed, "You’re mistaken there, what I value isn’t really the money, but I understand that without money, everything else is gone."
Aaron gestured dismissively and said, "Let’s sidestep this topic for now. Sea God, if I promise you Nicholas’s position, handing you Deyo’s arms market to manage, and give you the greatest degree of freedom, would you be willing to join the Operations Section?"
Without hesitation, Yang Yi replied, "Don’t just talk benefits. What are the demands? What do I need to do? Tell me these first."
Aaron smiled, but his expression quickly became serious, saying sternly, "I won’t send you to East Asia, I don’t need an undercover agent. I want you to continue doing what you’re good at, the work you were doing before, of course, you’ll need to complete my assignments. I don’t care how you do it, just get it done."
Yang Yi asked in surprise, "No matter how I do it?"
"Yes, I’m giving you the greatest freedom, but remember, it’s within the rules. I’ll give you a task, tell you what you can’t touch, and then you do your utmost to complete it. Simple, right?"
Yang Yi, incredulous, asked: "Why are the conditions so favorable?"
Aaron pursed his lips, thought for a moment, then leaned in close to Yang Yi’s ear and whispered, "Why I need you is because there are certain things inappropriate for CIA personnel to handle directly, but you have your own people. Understand my meaning?"
Yang Yi let out a breath and smiled, "I’m suited for the dirty work, I understand."
Aaron smiled and continued, "But the main thing is I value your ability; your personal capability is the best I’ve seen since I joined the CIA. You really are a genius. You must have heard this often, but geniuses are rare. I feel you’re wasted in the Management Section, so, I value your capabilities; that’s the main reason."
Yang Yi smiled, "Thank you for the compliment, you’re not wrong."
Aaron spread his hands and asked, "So you agree?"
Yang Yi spoke softly: "It’s an honor and I’m deeply grateful that you actively recruited me and are willing to pay such a high price, but I still have some questions."
"Go ahead."
"In the Management Section, uh, I was allowed to form my own team."
"Of course, you can also do that in the Operations Section. I won’t rush to give you any specific duties, but you’ll be a team leader, which is the treatment you deserve. No need to speak further, anyone you regard highly I can accommodate for you."
Yang Yi nodded and murmured, "I’m not greedy, but I want to know, since you can freely replace Nicholas, then what do you plan to do?"
