Chapter 1000: Chapter 105 Difficult Choices

After Yang Yi had become very familiar with flying the small aircraft, the T-6A, he began to realize its true purpose.

What does that mean? The T-6A is a trainer aircraft, a military trainer to be precise, which exists not to teach people who can’t fly to learn to fly, but to simulate learning to fly other types of aircraft for those who already know how to fly.

The T-6A is a propeller aircraft, and is also a primary trainer, but one thing to be clear about is that the T-6A is not outdated. Although its slower speed is a downside, as a trainer aircraft, the only downside is that slower speed.

In the United States, there are two kinds of trainer aircraft: the primary trainer T-6A and the advanced trainer T-38. However, the T-6A, except for not being able to simulate the speed of a jet fighter, is largely used as an all-purpose trainer.

That is to say, even with the T-6A, it is possible to simulate fighters like the F-15. Although there is a substantial difference in speed, what is important is the avionics systems of the trainer. If Yang Yi wishes to do so, he could learn to fly a transport aircraft on a T-6A.

Air Force fighter pilots must progress to advanced trainers, but for pilots of transport planes, bombers, including refueling planes, as long as it’s not a fighter, all system learning can be done on the T-6A. After graduating from the T-6A, they can proceed to real aircraft training.

In the CIA’s training camp, there are several variants of the T-6A, two of which even have complete Fire Control Systems.

Of course, the Fire Control Systems on trainers cannot be used to actually mount missiles or anything of that sort, but if the trainer simulates an F-15, then after graduating from this trainer, the pilot would at least know where the fire control switch is and how to operate it on the actual F-15.

After saying all that, the point is that Yang Yi suddenly realized after nearly twenty flight hours that there was something more in his trainer. Only then did he discover that this aircraft was used to train CIA spies on how to fly an F16.

Yang Yi, who had never flown a jet before, might be overwhelmed by the vast difference in speed if he were to pilot a real F16. However, he now had access to something a civilian pilot would never touch in their lifetime.

After landing and disembarking from the plane, Yang Yi’s first move was to head straight for Hegelhaus’s office.

Seeing Yang Yi, Hegelhaus’s face did not look good. He frowned and did not hide his distaste, saying, "What are you doing here?"

"Instructor, I want to learn to fly the F16!"

Hegelhaus laughed and said, "You’ve just started with a primary trainer, and now you want to learn to fly a fighter jet?"

Yang Yi hurriedly explained, "Sorry, Instructor, I didn’t make myself clear. The trainer I flew today has the F16 Fire Control System. I think since we can learn how to fly fighter jets here, then I... can I also learn? Just to get familiar, Instructor."

Hegelhaus laughed again and said, "You’ve only had twenty-one flight hours, and you want to learn to fly a jet? Should I say you’re arrogant, or should I say you’re an idiot?"

Yang Yi spoke earnestly: "Instructor, in my lifetime I might never get the chance to touch a real fighter jet or any other advanced models. But I am a spy, please understand that. I’m not an Air Force pilot; I am a spy. When I’m on a mission, if I have to pilot a fighter jet, even if I have never flown a jet before, I hope to at least know how to operate one. So, my request is not excessive, Instructor."

Hegelhaus was silent. Yang Yi hesitated, then continued, "Instructor, since the conditions are here, why not let me have a try? Even just a lecture would be fine, and if you don’t want to waste your time, you can arrange another instructor to teach me."

Finally, Hegelhaus spoke slowly: "That’s just the F16 Fire Control System. Our agents already have an advanced flying foundation, so they just need to get familiar with the fire control. The simulator and the real aircraft ultimately feel different. If you want to learn more complex models, you also need to start with a simulator. Additionally, if you want to know what’s it like to fly a jet, you need to get on a real one at least once."

Hegelhaus stood up, then picked up his sunglasses and said, "We don’t have jets at this airport because the noise is too loud. I can arrange for you to fly a T-38 advanced trainer; I’ll make the application, but I have one condition."

Yang Yi was excited and immediately asked, "What condition?"

Hegelhaus smiled and said, "You’re a genius, right?"

"Uh, you could say that."

"You learn anything quickly, right?"

"Yes."

Hegelhaus smiled and said, "Then let’s make a bet. We can simulate many types of aircraft here. You want to learn to fly a fighter jet? No problem. You want to learn to fly a transport plane? Also fine. But I’m giving you only twenty-four hours. I’ll now take you to get the flight manuals. I’ll provide you with anything we have here, but you have only twenty-four hours. After that time, I’ll take you to the simulator. If you pass the initial test on the simulator, I’ll take you to the real plane, and if you also pass the test on the real aircraft..."

He paused for a moment, took a deep breath, and continued, "Then congratulations, I’ll personally take you to an advanced trainer, regardless of which model you decide to fly. I’ll definitely take you to the real aircraft."

Yang Yi thought for a while and asked, "Do you mean twenty-four hours to learn one type of aircraft, or a total of only twenty-four hours?"

Hegelhaus smiled and said, "Only twenty-four hours. You can use these twenty-four hours to learn how to pilot an F16 fighter jet, or how to pilot a C130 transport plane, or you can learn to pilot a B52 bomber. You could even learn all three types simultaneously if you want, no problem. But I’m only giving you twenty-four hours."

Yang Yi took a deep breath and said, "Deal! It’s settled then!"

Hegelhaus smiled and said, "Considering the special nature of the CIA, you’re in luck. Follow me, I’ll give you what you need."

They came to a room, and Hegelhaus personally opened the door, saying solemnly, "Considering your clearance, you can fly any model the United States has for sale, but you cannot fly models that are not for export. So, take a look and see what you want to choose."

The flight manuals for various aircraft types were categorized and on display. But Yang Yi knew that within the range of aircraft he was allowed to choose, the C130 was a must.

The C130 is the most abundant and most commonly used transport aircraft in the United States, and many special-purpose aircraft are modified based on the C130. So without considering other transport aircraft, it had to be the C130. As for strategic transport aircraft like the C5 and C17, he didn’t even need to think about those.

As for bombers, refueling aircraft, early warning aircraft, and others, not to mention whether they can be learned here, even if they could, it would be useless to him.

So that leaves transport and fighter aircraft.

But when it comes to fighter aircraft, how to choose between the F16 and the F15?
