Chapter 69: First bite

Mo Chou went to university regularly after that day. There were no signs of Lu Jinhai whatsoever but he did send her texts occasionally asking if she had lunch, how her day had gone and of course the good night text every night.

Mo Chou didn’t think that she would be so used to Lu Jinhai’s presence that she would miss him every day but she did miss him a lot, at times she would even subconsciously turn to the seat next to her only to be reminded that Lu Jinhai wasn’t there.

Li Chen and Huang Chunhua had offered to accompany her to her classes even saying that they would take turns but Mo Chou rejected them, she felt that it just wasn’t the same.

On Friday, Li Chen and Huang Chunhua asked Mo Chou if they should cancel their plans for the weekend as Lu Jinhai was still busy.

Lu Jinhai was the one who was supposed to take them to the beach and organize the whole day but they thought as he seemed busy, they could perhaps reschedule it to some other day.

"Hmm, let me ask him first", Mo Chou felt a little disappointed as she had been looking forward to the weekend this whole time. She had even spent time looking up recipes in order to find something that everyone would like.

It would have been the first outing she ever had with her friends and she had even bought a floral dress and a beach hat just for the trip.

Li Chen and Huang Chunhua looked at each other, they could see that Mo Chou was sad. She had been looking a little lonely these days but refused their offer to accompany her every time which made them a little concerned.

"Hey, Li Chen and Huang Chunhua are asking whether we should reschedule the trip to the beach" Mo Chou sent a text to Lu Jinhai. She was about to put her phone down as she didn’t expect an immediate reply but her phone pinged immediately.

Lu Jinhai had sent a "no" and then added, "don’t worry about the trip, just follow the plan and come to my house at the set time, I have already prepared everything".

Mo Chou was pleasantly surprised with his reply.

He had already prepared everything even though he was busy, she would finally be able to see him tomorrow. She sent a thumbs up emoticon indicating that she agreed.

"What’s got you smiling like that huh?" Li Chen asked Mo Chou playfully all of a sudden.

"Huh? Was I smiling?" Mo Chou was a little confused, even though she herself didn’t know that she was smiling.

"Yup, you were texting Lu Jinhai right? What did he say?" asked Li Chen while Huang Chunhua listened quietly.

"Oh, he has already prepared everything and told us to just follow our initial plans. I guess he made some time just for the trip".

"Yay, that means weekend is on, by the way did you guys decide on what to cook? I’m so confused" asked Li Chen.

Huang Chunhua just gave them a mysterious smile and said that it was a secret.

"Mine too," Mo Chou said casually.

"Haah, I can’t wait, I’m going to be awake the whole night because of the excitement".

Everyone laughed hearing Li Chen’s words.

"So, we are going to meet up at Lu Jinhai’s house at eight in the morning right?" asked Huang Chunhua.

"Yeah, you guys already have the address, just use the maps application on your phones if you can’t find it" replied Mo Chou.

The bell indicating the end of break rang and Mo Chou headed to her next class after saying goodbye to her friends.

She was planning on baking a cake from scratch at night, so she wouldn’t have to wake up early the next day to cook. She would make two cakes and give one to her family to try at dinner time.

Mo Chou was busy thinking about the trip tomorrow and the baking, she felt her anticipation build up and thought, ’I hope I don’t end up staying awake the whole night just like Li Chen’.

After all her classes were over, Mo Chou said goodbye to her friends after confirming everything one last time.

Before heading home, she went to the grocery mart to buy some ingredients that she would need as she didn’t know if everything was already in their kitchen or not.

When she got home, the butler informed her that her mother and father had gone on a small lunch date and had yet to return, but they had asked her to wait for them for dinner even though it might be a little late.

Liu Dai was also at the company like usual. Mo Chou was actually a little happy that they were not home as that meant that she could surprise them with a cake later. After putting away her bag and freshening up, Mo Chou went to the kitchen.

She was going to make a chocolate cake, it was a relatively simple but tasty recipe she had found online.

The chef saw her enter the cooking area and was a little surprised, "young miss"?

"Ohh, I just wanted to bake a cake, don’t worry I won’t be interrupting your cooking" replied Mo Chou.

The chef heard Mo Chou’s polite words and was a little embarrassed, "I’m not afraid of you disturbing me young miss, should I help you"?

"No thanks, I want to make the whole thing myself, if I need help, I’ll ask you" . With that, Mo Chou started assembling all the ingredients.

The chef just looked at her for a moment before looking away, he was actually a little skeptical if Mo Chou would even succeed in baking a cake, she had never even entered the kitchen before and also he knew all about Mo Li’s ’incredible’ cooking.

He also offered Mo Li to help every time she was cooking something but Mo Li also refused every time claiming she wanted to do everything.

The chef remembered the first time he had tried Mo Li’s cooking. She had asked him to taste it after she was done, it was one of Liu Qiang’s favorite dishes. When the chef looked at the food, it looked really appetizing, so he took a big spoonful and immediately regretted it.

Still, he couldn’t say that it was bad, could he? The chef had no desire of getting on the wrong side of the wife loving Liu Qiang or Mo Li, so he had gritted his teeth and praised it to the heavens.

To his horror, Mo Li had been so happy with his praise that she had given him almost half of the dish and asked him to ’help himself’.

The chef had indigestion that day and even had to take medicine.

’Haaa, I hope the young miss doesn’t ask me to taste her cooking too’ The chef thought and started getting busy with his own cooking. He decided to put in extra effort today so that everyone would at least have the excuse that they were full, in case Mo Chou’s cooking was horrible too.

Mo Chou started making the cake. She followed all the instructions precisely, ’I guess nothing can go wrong as long as I follow the recipe exactly right? I just hope I didn’t inherit mom’s cooking skills’.

After putting the cake in the oven to cook, she started making the frosting and preparing the toppings.

Everyone in the family liked strawberries, so she had bought fresh ones from the mart. There was still a lot of time till the cake had to be taken out of the oven, so Mo Chou decided to make some simple chocolate chip cookies too. She could give some to all her friends, ’I’ll put them in small containers and wrap them’.

Mo Chou was busy in the kitchen but found that she didn’t dislike it, in fact the process of making food for everyone made her happy, maybe it was because she was making something for her closest friends and family but she felt content.

By the time the cakes were done, the cookies had also finished baking. Mo Chou looked at her creations and took some pictures. She packed one cake and the cookies and took the other cake to the dining room.

It was already dinner time and her parents were probably home too. When she entered the dining room, it was completely empty but the maids had already set the table which meant everyone was going to be there soon.

Mo Chou put the cake at the center of the table and took her seat. Soon, the maids came with the food one by one. Liu Dai also arrived and greeted Mo Chou but didn’t really notice the cake as he thought it was probably made by the chef.

Mo Chou decided to keep everyone in the dark till they ate it so that she would get their honest reactions as she knew how they acted with her mother’s cooking.

Mo Li and Liu Qiang also arrived soon after, everyone started eating while Mo Li excitedly talked about her lunch date with Liu Qiang.

Mo Chou ate very fast as she couldn’t wait for dessert time.

"Ohh,it seems like the chef made a chocolate cake today, it even has strawberries," Liu Qiang said and took a big slice. Everyone else also took some and Mo Chou sat in anticipation looking at everyone’s expressions.

Liu Qiang was the first one to take a bite, he exclaimed immediately after taking a bite and said, "It’s....."
