Chapter 1081: Chapter 144 : The Perfect Time

*Lucas*

I jerked awake and looked around the dark room. What time was it? How long had I been asleep? I reached for the clock next to the bed. It was late.

Dammit–I’d missed Sasha’s special party event. Xander had told me to be there. I was just so exhausted when I got back from the airport. I just wanted to rest my eyes for a few minutes.

Silently I cursed myself.

I heard a sniffle, and I froze.

Slowly, I turned on the bed and saw Sasha curled up next to me. She had her back to me and the covers trembled slightly.

“Sasha?” I reached for her.

She gasped and pulled away. “Oh, you’re awake.”

She didn’t sound all that happy. I flipped the bedside lamp on and took in her bleary eyes and tear-streaked face.

“What’s wrong?” I asked. I reached for her again.

Sasha pulled away from me and brushed my hand aside with a flick of her wrist. She propped herself up on the pillows and pulled the blanket tightly around her.

“Haven’t you listened to anything I’ve said over the past few weeks in the brief moments we have to talk to each other?”

I frowned. It wasn’t lost on me that Sasha was upset about how much time the new job took up. I knew we’d get through it though, because it was only temporary.

Looking at how upset she was now; I could see it was more than what I expected.

“Is this because I missed the party? I really wanted to be there. I was getting ready and thought I’d just rest my eyes for a few minutes.”

“But you weren’t there! It doesn’t matter what you wanted or what you meant to do, Lucas, because you weren’t there!”

She sighed heavily and shook her head.

“I know. I’m sorry, I’m going to make it up to you.”

Sasha scoffed. “When? In the two minutes I see you before you rush off to work, or the thirty seconds I get when you come home?”

“I–”

“Lucas, we are living completely separate lives right now. If that’s what life is going to be like from here on out, what’s the point of getting married? We barely have a relationship anymore.”

The air rushed from my lungs and I felt like someone had kicked me in the gut. Sasha was seriously considering calling off our engagement? How had things gotten this bad? Where was I?

Oh right, I was traveling back and forth between the Light Realm. How had I not noticed that Sasha was completely falling apart?

“Sasha, I think you’re overreacting....”

“Really?” she snapped. “You think I’m overreacting? When was the last time we had a real conversation? Better yet, when was the last time we spent any one-on-one time together or family time that wasn’t a rushed meal while you’re on your way out the door?”

I pursed my lips and looked down. She was right. Since I had gotten the job, we hadn’t done any of those things.

“The job is really demanding.”

“And being a single parent isn’t!?”

“You’re not a single parent!” I glared at her.

“Oh, really? When was the last time you changed Hunter’s diaper, gave him a bath, or put him to sleep? You’re not here to walk him in the gardens or talk to the nanny about what he did all day while she watched him. I’m basically a single parent with a job.”

“You took that job because you wanted something to do. If you want to be around for Hunter more–”

“That’s not the point!” Sasha threw the covers off and stood up. “You’re missing your son’s life and I’m the one who has to pick up the slack. It all falls on me!”

“My job is providing the primary finances for our family. With it, we’ll have the future we always talked about.”

“I can’t imagine what that future is like anymore because I barely feel like we’re in a relationship anymore.”

My heart sank. I couldn’t believe all the things Sasha was saying. It wasn’t like she was wrong, but I thought she supported the job and the future we wanted.

“Lucas, all I wanted was for you to show up for me today. I wanted you to be proud of what I’ve been working on and just... be there. If you can’t do that for me, how do I know you’ll be able to do that for Hunter? Will you miss his first day of school because of a client meeting? Will you be there when he gets sick or off on a private jet?”

“I can’t control what the job requires of me, Sasha. But I do know that everything I’m doing is providing for my family.”

“You’ve changed.” She shook her head and paced around the room. She looped her arms around her stomach. “Ever since you got this promotion and started this project, you’ve changed. You’re not the man I wanted to share my life with.”

I scoffed and stared at her. What was I supposed to say to that? I still couldn’t believe half the things that were coming out of her mouth.

“It is just this one project Sasha. After that, it won’t be like this.”

“How do you know? An airport brings a lot of new opportunity to this realm. As a Royal Engineer, you’re going to be first in line for those projects and opportunities.”

“And I’ll always be able to provide for our family because of that,” I pointed out.

“We’re not going to be a family if we’re living separate lives. And now I know you won’t be there for me....”

She looked down at her stomach and frowned.

“It was just one event.”

“No, Lucas, it was more than that! By not showing up, you told me that my life and my career are not important to you. You showed me that I’m not a priority to you.”

“Sasha....”

My heart was breaking, but I wanted her to understand that everything I did was for her and for our future. Why couldn’t she see that?

Her face was set and determined. I knew that if I didn’t say the right things in this conversation, she’d walk out of here and we were done.

I couldn’t let that happen.

“This airport project has been a lot. I’m going back and forth between the Light Realm and I’ve got a lot of people answering to me.”

Sasha sighed and I saw her shoulders tremble. “I understand why it is so important and why there is so much pressure on you. But I need to know that you’ll be here for me and our family, regardless of what your job demands are.”

“Are you asking me to resign this position, for the sake of our relationship?”

Slowly, Sasha came to the bed. Her eyes were still puffy but her tears were dry. She placed her hand over mine and when I felt the warmth of her skin, I realized just how long it had been since we were able to just hold each other.

“I don’t want you to resign if you don’t want to. I know how much this means to you. But if you keep the job, you need to find a way to balance work and home life better, even if that means bringing on more people to oversee work so you don’t have to be as hands-on.”

I grimaced at the thought. I loved being hands-on with my work and I liked being the one my crew could turn to, no matter what. But Sasha was right, I needed better balance, or she was ready to walk out the door.

“I can’t spend our marriage feeling alone all the time. I just can’t!”

“I know. And I’m sorry you’ve been feeling this way, more so that I haven’t been around for you to share your thoughts and feelings with.”

Sasha nodded slowly and I could feel my heart breaking all over again. I should have been here for her.

“No matter what, I’m not going to lose you, not after everything we’ve been through,” I insisted.

I closed my fingers around her hand and pulled her closer.

Sasha gasped and landed against my chest. I ran my fingers through her hair and kissed her forehead.

She let out a soft whimper and wrapped her arms around me tightly. I heard her sniffle again and she trembled in my grasp.

“Lucas,” she whispered.

I shook my head and took her chin in my fingers. I tipped her head back and stared into her eyes. “Shh, just let me hold you again.”

She nodded and I closed the space between us, kissing her warm, plump lips. She let out a soft moan and turned toward me, straddling my lap with her legs. She wrapped her arms around my neck, her thighs clenching around my legs.

I groaned, the sound muffled in her mouth, my cock stiffening against my boxers. I ran my hands down her sides, feeling her curves under her silk night dress. It felt like I was touching her fir the first time.

Sasha moaned and trembled. I smirked against her lips and slipped my hands under her night dress. I ran my fingers up her legs, over the round curves of her hips, and along her sides, caressing her warm, soft skin.

She trembled in my grasp, her breaths shallow and shuttering.

The heat between my legs intensified, aching for release.

Growling, I looped my arm around Sasha’s waist and flipped her over, laying her gently on the pillows. She kept her arms around me tightly and pulled me down to her. I thrust my hips against her, rubbing my bound erection between us. She moaned and threw her head back on the pillows.

I could tell how much she’d longed for this.

I placed a warm kiss on her neck and sucked gently as I threw my boxers aside. I pushed her silky night dress up her sides, breaking my kiss just long enough to pull it over her head.

Sasha writhed on the bed, begging me with her body. I ran my hands down her sides and grabbed her legs. Gently, I coaxed them apart and pressed my engorged, firm tip against her soaked entrance. She whimpered and bucked her hips against me.

Slowly, I pushed my way inside. Her inner walls closed around me snuggly, enveloping my cock in the warmest, softest embrace.

Gasping, I covered Sasha with my body. She wrapped her legs around my hips and pulled me closer. I thrust into her slowly, sensually. She shook and trembled, moaning and panting with each thrust. She rolled her hips, meeting my thrusts and bringing us closer together.

I found her lips again and kissed her sweetly, swallowing each moan as her cries of ecstasy became louder and needier. Her whole body tensed, and I felt her insides cinch tight around me. She moaned loudly and shook against me. I couldn’t take it anymore.

Groaning, I released inside of her, clinging to her and burying my head in the crook of her neck.

She held me close, cradling my head.

After a long moment, I felt her tense again. I lifted my head to look into her eyes.

“What’s wrong?”

“Lucas... today, I found out that I’m pregnant again.”

I blinked a few times. “Really?” A smile tugged at my lips, and I knew I looked like a complete fool.

She nodded and bit her lower lip.

“Well, I’d say it is the perfect time for a wedding, then.”
