Chapter 1060: Chapter 123 : On the Run

*Lucas*

I opened my eyes and immediately closed my arms around Sasha. It was so good to have her back in my arms. I felt at peace. I felt complete.

Her breathing was soft and warm, even. She was still asleep. I had no desire to wake her, so I held her in my arms and closed my eyes again, pretending to stay asleep.

She sighed and wiggled against me.

“Are you pretending to sleep?” she asked.

I chuckled and nodded. “I’m enjoying the moment.”

“Me too. But we should probably get up and figure out what to do next.”

I hugged her and ran my nose through her hair. “Yeah... I guess so.”

Sasha got up and started getting dressed. I followed her with my eyes. I didn’t want to let her out of my sight ever again.

Reluctantly, I got up and got dressed as well. I looped my arm over her shoulders and walked with her to the kitchen.

“What do you want for breakfast? I’m thinking... we should have French toast.” Sasha giggled and headed to the refrigerator.

“French toast sounds lovely.”

Sasha cracked and whisked the eggs while I warmed up the pan on the stove. We moved around each other in perfect unison, like we were practicing a dance. We never bumped into each other or got in each other’s way.

It all felt so good and natural.

We sat next to each other at the table, eating French toast and drinking orange juice. Sasha pressed her foot against my leg, running it up and down my calf. I smiled and pushed back against her.

“So... we should talk about what we’re going to do with the other Sasha... how we’re going to handle this situation.”

Sasha sighed and nodded. “Okay. Well, I think she’ll understand if we tell her the truth. She must know that we can’t both be in this reality and that if she stays here, it will be detrimental for our reality and hers.”

“I’m not sure that’s enough to convince her.” I sliced up my French toast into bite sized pieces and stared at them. My appetite suddenly evaporated.

“She’s not unreasonable. I know what she wants and if we can offer it to her, I think she’ll return to her own reality after the baby is born.”

“I hope you’re right, Sasha. She already tried to take the baby once. We need to be careful with her. There’s no telling what she will do.” My heart clenched when I thought of the fear of losing my baby to the other Sasha.

Seeing her pack up to leave had been terrifying. I wasn’t going to risk that feeling ever again.

“There’s a way to settle this peacefully. We can come up with a compromise. When she comes down for breakfast, we’ll talk to her.”

I nodded and rubbed the back of my neck. “We need to do this smartly. I don’t want her to think that we’re ganging up on her.”

We finished our breakfast and cleaned up. The other Sasha still hadn’t come down to eat. It was unusual that she wasn’t up before me, especially since Sasha and I had slept in.

“Hmm... that’s strange. She’s usually up by now.” I listened hard but couldn’t hear any movement. “I’m going to go check on her.”

I headed upstairs and knocked on the guest room door. “Sasha, are you awake?”

The door popped open. I frowned when I saw the bed empty and made. This wasn’t good. I went straight to the bed and found a note.

There was one sentence on the note, signed by the other Sasha. She said she was leaving for good–no other explanation.

My heart raced and my palms grew cold and clammy. For a long, endless moment, I was paralyzed to the spot.

“Lucas, what’s going on up there?”

Sasha’s voice pulled me from my terror. I raced downstairs and handed Sasha the note.

“She’s gone!”

“What!?” Sasha ripped the note away from me and read it. She shook her head over and over again. “No... no....”

Panic swelled in my chest. How long had she been gone? I didn’t even hear her leave. She had to have left while we were still asleep.

She could have been anywhere by now....

“I can’t believe this. I finally came home to this nightmare. We have to find her and find our baby.”

“You’re right.” I touched Sasha’s shoulder. “We will find her.”

Sasha breathed heavily, hyperventilating. I put my arms around her and eased her onto the couch.

“Start calling around. Call your friends, family, the other Sasha’s job. I want you to ask anyone if they’ve seen her and to let you know if they do see her.”

“Right.” She nodded absently as I handed her the phone. “What... what are you going to do?”

Sasha looked up at me with wide, hopeful eyes.

“I’m going to get Brady and do some tracking. I’ll let you know when I find something.”

I met up with Brady close to the college campus.

“What’s this emergency about?”

“The other Sasha ran off with my baby. I need you to track her scent so I can catch up with her.”

“Man, you should put a tracking device on her if she’s going to run off every time she gets spooked.”

“Not now, Brady. It’s not the time for jokes.”

Brady sighed and nodded. “I’ll find her.” He held a hand up and started honing in on Sasha’s scent.

I stepped back and gave him space. I stuck my hands in my pocket and paced back and forth.

“I’ve got something, Lucas. Let’s go!”

Brady took off down the sidewalk, pushing past a few pedestrians. I raced after him to keep up.

We followed Sasha’s scent all the way to a café downtown.

“The scent is strongest here.” Brady went to one of the tables on the terrace.

I went into the café and pulled a picture of Sasha out of my pocket. “Have you seen this woman?” I asked the barista.

She creased her brow and squinted at the photo. “Oh, yeah, you just missed her. Why are you looking for her?”

“She’s pregnant with my child.”

The barista scoffed and shook her head. “Well... when she left, she wasn’t alone, if you get my meaning. I thought he was the father.”

“Who was she with!?” I demanded.

The barista shrugged and popped her bubble gum. “No idea.”

Groaning, I headed out to touch base with Brady. While I had interrogated the barista, he’d called my Sasha, and Ian was just dropping her off when I joined them.

“I’m sorry, but it looks like it’s a dead end.” I sighed and hugged Sasha. “She left with someone. The barista doesn’t know who.”

Sasha frowned and pointed to the café. I followed her finger and saw the security camera.

“Maybe the camera caught it.”

The barista didn’t want us to see the video footage, but after some persuasion and a few threats, she finally gave in.

Sasha, Brady, and I huddled around the small screen in the back office.

The other Sasha showed up and sat there drinking juice for a long time. She looked confused and upset. I wondered if she heard the thing my Sasha and I had talked about the night before.

We weren’t exactly quiet during our reunion.

I smiled to myself and put a hand on Sasha’s back. The fond memories of the night before momentarily eased the panic in my chest.

“Oh my Goddess!” Sasha gasped and pointed to the screen. “Is that Stone Hamline?”

“Stone!?” I growled.

“They talk for a while and then she leaves with him. He must have spun a really sweet story for her,” Brady said.

Sasha looked up at me, her eyes wide with fear. “In the other reality, where the other Sasha came from, she was engaged to Stone!”

“You think she trusts him here?” I quirked an eyebrow.

“I think he’s a very smooth talker who could convince her of anything, especially if she was trying to get away from us.”

“This isn’t good,” I grumbled. “The other Sasha has her Dream Dancer powers, and the last we knew of the future orb, it was still with Stone. There’s a good bet he has it. Otherwise, why would he approach Sasha?”

“You mean, this is about her power?” Sasha asked, her brow creasing.

I nodded slowly. “Stone and Donavan were working together to try to take your powers. There’s a good chance that’s what he’s after now.”

“Lucas,” Sasha gasped. She grabbed my shirt in her fist, her eyes widening in horror. “If Stone has the future orb, he could take the other Sasha anywhere. He could hide her in any reality. There’s no way we’ll find them!”

I heard the desperation in her voice and it broke my heart. I took her in my arms and cradled her against my chest.

“Shh... this isn’t over yet. You have the power of a goddess, remember? We can use that to track them into any reality. You’re more powerful than all the other Sashas combined. That has to work in our favor.”

She sniffled and nodded against me. “But... the baby. What use will Stone have for the baby?”

I kissed her forehead. “Trust me, the other Sasha won’t let anything happen to our baby.”

“Really?”

“Really. I know it sounds strange, but she has devoted a lot to the health and safety of our child. I think part of her has bonded with him.”

“I don’t know... I don’t trust Stone and I don’t trust her.”

“Neither do I. But I trust her maternal instincts. When I told her how dangerous it was to travel to the Light Realm while pregnant, she immediately reconsidered.”

“You’re right. Whenever I connected with her, I could feel how much she cared about our son. I think that’s why part of her wanted to stay here and keep my life. She didn’t want to give him up.”

Brady chimed in. “We’ve still got a lot of work to do, you two. I’m afraid that if Stone is planning on leaving this reality, my tracking skills will only get us so far. Besides, a guy like Stone is bound to know how to cover his tracks from a vampire.”

I nodded and clapped Brady on the shoulder. “Thanks for helping out this much. At least we have a starting point now.”

The three of us left the coffee shop. Brady headed back to the campus, and Sasha and I got in the car. Ian dutifully drove us back to the mansion.

“I thought Xander and Lena were dealing with the Stone issue,” Sasha muttered.

“They can only do so much. Stone is working with Morianne, after all. He’s got resources.”

“I know the other Sasha will take care of the baby and I know Stone is our bigger problem but... I can’t help but feel like she’ll still choose to save herself and take what she wants rather than protect our son.”
