Chapter 1029: Chapter 92 : Did What We Set Out to Do

*Lucas*

I saw Sasha hit the floor and immediately shifted back. I grabbed the nearest pair of pants and threw them on. Sasha was rigid and pale. I scooped her into my arms and shook her gently.

“Sasha, wake up, baby.”

Her face was streaked with tears and she felt so light and empty.

Lena came up beside me and put a hand on Sasha’s forehead. She closed her eyes and let out a long, slow breath.

“She’s fine, Lucas, just drained and exhausted. She fainted from lack of energy. Once she rests and eats, she’ll be fine,” she assured, touching my back.

“Should a healer see her?”

Lena shook her head. “That magic forced itself back into her in a rush and then exploded back out of her. She’s just exhausted. She isn’t injured.”

I nodded and clutched Sasha’s light, unconscious form closer to my bare chest. Her skin was cold and clammy. I wanted to warm her up.

“Guard, please escort Lucas and Sasha to their room,” Lena called to the nearest guard.

“Wait, you guys need help here with the injured.”

Lena gave me a look and then glanced at Sasha in my arms. “Are you going to put her down to help?”

Instinctively, I held her even closer.

“I didn’t think so,” she continued. “Watch over her while she rests. Xander and I can handle the injured. We’ll make sure no one escapes.”

I nodded and followed the guard back to our rooms. I wasn’t sure why Lena wanted us to have an escort. Maybe she was worried there were more clergymen somewhere in the palace.

The guard remained outside the room. I let the door close and carried Sasha to the bed. When I laid her down, she whimpered and reached for me again, a shiver running through her.

I grabbed a blanket and pulled it around her.

“You’re okay, my love. I’m looking after you.”

I brushed the hair from her face and kissed her forehead.

She was so still and pale. I grabbed a washcloth and bowl of water from the bathroom. Sitting on the edge of the bed, I wrung out the cloth and wiped down Sasha’s face and arms. She seemed to relax at the contact.

Her eyelids fluttered and I set the bowl aside.

“Sasha?” I asked. I took her hand in mine. “Come on baby. Wake up.”

She blinked rapidly and opened her beautiful eyes, locking them onto mine.

“Lucas!” she sat up and threw her arms around my neck. She sobbed lightly and tightened her arms.

I put my hands on her waist and kissed her neck. “I’m here. It’s okay. I’ve got you.”

She sighed and pulled back. “I... I don’t even know what happened. How did I get here?” Her eyes darted around the room.

“You fainted in the throne room.”

Sasha frowned and a deep crease formed between her eyes.

“The throne room?”

Uh-oh. Did she not remember what happened? I looked into her eyes. She was thinking hard.

Suddenly, she gasped and covered her mouth with her hands.

“Oh, my Goddess! What did I do?”

Her face paled and she wavered slightly.

I grabbed Sasha’s shoulders and shook her. “Don’t faint again, please. You had me really worried.”

“Lucas... I hurt so many people. Morianne and The Immortal were right about me all along.”

“Shh, take a deep breath,” I instructed.

Sasha nodded and followed my instructions. She closed her eyes and sagged slightly.

I put my arm around her shoulders and held her close to me, sitting with her on the bed.

“Sasha, this isn’t your fault. You can’t blame yourself for this.”

“It is my fault. I was the one wielding the power. I was the one who lashed out and hurt everyone.”

“No,” I cooed. I ran my fingers through her hair and kissed her temple. “You were acting in self-defense and overwhelmed by the power.”

“That’s not an excuse, Lucas. I still hurt and killed–”

“You saved a lot of people, too. You took out The Immortal and you know he would have destroyed you, the rest of us, and a lot of other people.”

Sasha sighed and leaned her body against mine. I cradled her in my arms and rocked her slightly.

“But I–”

“Stop, right now. I’m not going to let you blame yourself for this. The magic in the staff wasn’t properly contained, even after all Morianne’s insistence. Besides, we have no idea what she could have done, how she tampered with the power.”

“You think she did something?” Sasha asked. She looked up at me with wide, hopeful eyes.

“All I know is that you’ve used the power in self-defense before and you’ve never lost control. It wasn’t you, okay?”

She sighed and nodded.

I didn’t think she believed me fully, but I’d keep convincing her until she accepted it. It had been terrifying, watching her lose control like that. The power had singed the air in the throne room. It felt like I was constricted in a heavy, wet blanket getting shocked with electricity.

It was not a fun experience.

I didn’t blame Sasha, though. She was just trying to get back what was hers. If Morianne hadn’t taken her power, if The Immortal hadn’t been trying to kill her, none of this would have happened.

There were a lot of other people to blame before pointing the finger at her.

I knock came at the door.

“Can I come in?” Lena asked.

“Yes, please, it is unlocked,” I called back.

Lena entered with a maid who brought us two trays of food. Sasha grabbed hers and started ravenously devouring the meal.

I chuckled. “Glad to see you have an appetite.”

“I feel like I haven’t eaten in days,” she gasped through a full mouth.

“That’s understandable. The power you used sucked a lot out of you. It drained your energy. Now, you need to build it back up with plenty of food and plenty of rest,” Lena said.

“Thanks.” Sasha sighed and took another bite.

“How’s it going with the surviving clergymen?” I asked.

Sasha stiffened beside me. I put a comforting hand on her knee.

“They’ve been treated and are all being detained for now. We will interrogate them and get what we can out of them.”

I cleared my throat. “Do you think the Church will retaliate?”

“No.” Lena shook her head. “They attacked the king and queen in our own throne room. I’m certain the rest of the church would rather denounce them than show any kind of support.”

“That’s a good point. They’ll probably claim that they had no knowledge of the actions of those particular officials. Unfortunately, it doesn’t help weed out any other threats in the Church.”

Lena shrugged. “I’m not worried about it, especially since it is mostly high-ranking officials we have in custody. It will take the Church time to promote people into their positions of authority.”

I smirked and nodded. “Right, and by the time the vacuums in leadership are filled, the need to retaliate will have cooled.”

“Yes. And the Church will have put plenty of distance between themselves and the attack. There will be no need to dredge it all up again.”

I chuckled. “Well, aren’t you the political mastermind?”

“I didn’t get the role of White Queen for nothing.”

“Will they be charged with anything?” Sasha asked in a small voice beside me.

“They will. There will be charges of treason against the Crown, among some smaller charges about trespassing and whatnot.”

“What will the penalty be?” Sasha’s voice was still somber and quiet.

“Well, those who are convicted will be stripped of rank, title, and power. Some might face life imprisonment; others might face banishment. Sentencing won’t be the same depending on their testimony, and how forthcoming they are in interrogations.”

“I feel awful that all of this happened because of me,” Sasha muttered.

Lena reached out and took Sasha’s hand. “This isn’t because of you. This is because there are entities out there that will stop at nothing to get more power and control.”

Sasha smiled weakly.

“Trust me, Sasha, there’s nothing evil about you or your power. But there are always evil people that will want to use it against you or for their own advantage.”

“That’s what I keep telling her.” I slung my arm over her shoulders and gave her a side hug.

“What about Morianne? I hurt her pretty badly. D-did she make it?”

“Unfortunately, she survived,” Lena said.

“Unfortunately!?” Sasha gasped.

“Are you surprised I feel that way? Sasha, she stole your powers when you were a baby. She defied direct orders from her king and queen, and she was exercising power and control beyond her station. I doubt her brush with death will lessen her rebelliousness or ambition.”

“She’s still a person.”

“Some people are too dangerous to be kept alive,” I muttered.

“Morianne was badly injured. I didn’t think she would make it, honestly,” Lena explained.

I wasn’t sure why Sasha was so upset about killing The Immortal and hurting Morianne, though I knew she didn’t like fighting or violence, and I knew she didn’t want to be the cause of other people getting hurt.

She was such a good, pure person.

I also knew that she didn’t want to feel like her power was a curse, a burden, or evil. If people kept dying around her because of her power, that was how she’d feel, whether they had ill intentions or not.

“What happened to her?” Sasha asked.

“We moved her to the palace infirmary. She’s in intensive care but expected to make a full recovery,” Lena told us.

“Then what? She’s not going to return to the head of the Church, is she?”

Lena scoffed. “No, definitely not. She has her own charges to face–treason, disobeying orders, crimes against children, among others.”

“Are you sure the charges will stick? She does have a very loyal following,” I pointed out.

“She’s not going anywhere for a long time. It will take weeks for her to get out of intensive care. The Church will be forced to replace her long before she stands trial.”

“That’s a small comfort,” I grumbled.

“Is it? I had no control over what I did to her.” Sasha sighed and leaned more heavily against me.

“It is. It means that Morianne’s social power is gone. She’ll have no following, no support. She will face her charges and be sentenced. Someone as dangerous as Morianne will be imprisoned for a very, very long time,” Lena assured.

“You should be proud Sasha. In this reality, you got your powers back in that cane, you defeated The Immortal, and you got rid of Morianne as a threat. We can return to our own timeline now, knowing this one will be safe.”

Sasha licked her lips and looked up at me. For the first time since she woke up, she had a smile on her lips.

“You’re right. We did what we set out to do here.”
