Chapter 1028: Chapter 91 : You’re in Control
*Sasha*
I couldn’t tear my eyes away from the battle. Xander got knocked down again and again by The Immortal. I knew how strong The Immortal was. Xander would start to lose his strength if he kept getting attacked like that.
Lucas tore through some of the church officials and focused on keeping everyone in the throne room. I hoped that wouldn’t cause problems.
If we needed to run, would we get out fast enough?
Lena shifted and stood before me. She snarled and snapped at any of the church officials who got close.
Her entire body radiated with the power of the Moon Goddess, and I noticed that the church officials were giving her a wide berth.
They might be willing to stop Lycaon’s prophecy, but they weren’t willing to oppose the Moon Goddess.
That worked in our favor.
I didn’t have my powers but I could still shift if I needed to. My wolf prowled in my head, eager to sink her teeth into the church officials. I didn’t want to hurt anyone, though. I wanted to get my powers back and stop the fighting.
This was the kind of battle I wanted to avoid when I first felt the tension rising. I hated the idea of everyone fighting over me and my power.
Even if I shifted, I knew I was no match for The Immortal. I was no match for Morianne, either... not until I got my powers back.
That was the only thing I knew of that could put The Immortal down.
Sighing, I leaned against the nearest wall and looped my arms around myself. There was nothing I could do. I felt so... useless.
A flicker of light caught my eye, and I looked at Morianne. She raised her stick into the air, and the gemstone on top flickered and glowed.
My skin prickled and the hairs on my arms and neck stood on end.
A wave of energy erupted from the stone. My whole body buzzed, even though the magic didn’t touch me.
It felt so strong and familiar.
That was my magic, my power... Morianne was using it.
That witch....
The wave knocked everyone against a wall.
There were cries and whines of pain. Royal Guard soldiers, Xander, clergymen, and The Immortal all crumpled to the floor.
I held my breath, wondering how hurt they were. They were all so still for a moment. Had she done more than just knock them over?
After a long moment, Xander growled and shook off the guards piled on top of him.
He rose to his feet and pounced on the vulnerable immortal being, biting into him. I noticed that he barely caused any damage or harm to him.
My stomach sank. There really was no way to get to him without my power.
I knew now that Morianne had it. I had to get my hands on that stick and that gemstone.
Quickly, I glanced around.
There were too many clergymen and Royal Guard soldiers between me and Morianne. I couldn’t get to her and Lena wouldn’t let me slip away.
My eyes landed on Lucas. He was still guarding the door and fighting off anyone who tried to escape. Clearly, he and Xander wanted to end all of this right here, right now.
‘Lucas.’
I called to him through the mind-link. It was the first time. My mind extended to him and I could feel him through our shared bond. I wanted to enjoy that moment, but we were under attack.
I quickly filled him in on getting my powers back to go after The Immortal.
He started stalking toward Morianne. I needed to wait for my opening. If I ran off, it would distract Lena and put her in danger.
Lena growled and lunged forward, pushing The Immortal back.
I gasped. I hadn’t even seen him get closer to me.
Lena and Xander became a wall of fur and muscle as they faced off with The Immortal.
That was my chance....
I edged along the wall toward Morianne, trying not to draw attention to myself.
Lucas stalked toward her from the other side. His hackles and fur raised. He got close to Morianna and froze. Lucas’s eyes flicked to me.
I just had to get a little bit closer. Then Lucas could attack.
I inched along the wall a few more steps and nodded to Lucas.
“Go, Lucas, go!”
He snarled and jumped at Morianne.
“No! You filthy beast!” she flew across the room, the stick falling from her hands.
Lucas went after her, chasing her into a corner. I didn’t stop to see what became of Morianne.
The walking stick clattered to the floor. I jumped on it before any clergyman could grab it.
My fingers curled around the stick, and a sudden burst of energy surged through me.
The gemstone glowed bright blue and my hands burned white hot. All the power from the stone exploded into me so forcefully that it flung me back against the wall.
I groaned, my head swirling dizzily. The power pulsed around me and inside of me. My head ached and I felt like my brain would explode.
‘Sasha!’
Lucas’s voice sounded so far away even though it was right in my head.
My fingers were hot and numb at the same time. The stick vibrated in my hands so violently, sending tremors up my arms. I thought I felt my bones cracking from the tremors.
I couldn’t tell where my hands ended and the stick began. It was fusing to my skin.
I cried out and whipped around. A huge surge exploded from the gemstone and shot directly at Lucas and Morianne.
Lucas growled and dodged out of the way. The wave hit Morianne.
“Ahhh!” she screamed and crumpled to the ground, motionless.
What was happening? Why couldn’t I let go of the stick? The tremors got even more violent, shaking my entire body from head to toe. My vision blurred and I could barely see.
‘Sasha, let go of the staff!’ Lucas mind-linked.
“I can’t!” I shouted. I couldn’t even tell where my hands were or if my fingers were holding it.
“Stop this! Don’t let her get her power back!”
The Immortal’s voice came through my clouded vision strong and clear.
Clergymen ran at me. The Royal Guards tried to intercept, but my magic exploded again and the guards and clergymen were sent flying.
“Stop, stop it!” I gasped, trying to release the staff.
I saw that the guards and clergymen were all bent out of shape. They had broken bones, and I knew some of them were dead.
“This isn’t what I want,” I wailed.
“She’s going to kill us all!” The Immortal shouted.
“No. No!” I didn’t want that. I didn’t want The Immortal to send more people after me.
They’d just get hurt like the others. I couldn’t control the magic. It kept lashing out on its own.
Another bolt of magic crackled out of the staff. It surrounded The Immortal and lifted him into the air.
“Stop this, Sasha. This is madness,” he shouted, and he struggled against the power.
His voice trailed off and he made a horrible gurgling sound. His back contorted impossibly.
The Immortal stopped struggling, and no more sound came from him. He was completely immobilized, his power useless.
That should have been a good thing but I still couldn’t let go of the staff. I shook my arms, trying to get it away from me, but it didn’t work.
More magic flooded from me and pulsed around me.
I saw Xander and Lena through the crackles, getting closer.
“Stay back! I can’t control it!” I shouted.
The two of them slowly backed away and Xander issued an order to his guards. They all retreated to the farthest wall in the room.
I didn’t know if that was far enough.
‘Sasha, listen to me. Focus. Focus on controlling the power and putting the staff down.’
Lucas’s voice in my head steadied me.
I nodded, tears streaking down my cheeks. I tried to ignore the insane crackling and rush of power.
“Focus, focus,” I muttered to myself. I had to reel this in....
Crack!
The crunching, cracking sound sickened me to the core. I glanced at The Immortal, still suspended in the air.
His bones stuck out at all the wrong angles. I could see his limbs stretching and then, his body spun around and around until it tore itself apart. His pieces scattered around the throne room, hitting different walls and falling to the floor, squelching.
My stomach turned.
‘Sasha, listen to me.’ Lucas called.
I nodded and focused on his voice.
‘It’s okay, Sasha. Let go of the staff. You’re in control. You can do this. Focus!’
I nodded again and felt for my fingers. It took a moment, but finally, I separated my fingers from the staph. I pried them off the wood.
Almost immediately, the magic stopped crackling around me. the staff clattered to the floor.
I gasped and panted, clutching my chest. Fresh tears ran down my cheeks. My entire body trembled. I leaned against the wall as my knees wobbled dangerously.
The throne room filled with moans and groans of pain. The doors burst open and several more guards rushed in.
They brought medics with them. Soldiers and clergymen all over the throne room were seriously injured.
I took a quick look around. Some of them were twisted and bent in horrible positions. My eyes widened. I didn’t think all of them would survive.
My heart hammered in my chest and I hyperventilated. I clamped my eyes shut.
This had to be a dream. This was some horrible nightmare. It wasn’t real.
I didn’t do this....
When I opened my eyes, the carnage was all around me.
The Immortal’s blood was splattered on the throne room walls and floor. After a moment, I realized that there was some on my face too. Disgusted, I wiped my hands down my face trying to get it all off.
I breathed heavier and faster. My heart felt like it was going to break out of my chest, and my lungs threatened to burst like balloons.
So much damage, so much pain and death. It was all caused by me, just like The Immortal had said.
I clutched at the wall, wishing I could unsee everything I was seeing. I wished I could undo everything I’d done.
“Sasha.”
I heard Lena’s soft voice but I couldn’t see her. Tears welled in my eyes again. My mind spun and stars appeared in the corners of my eyes.
Everything around me tipped sideways. I thudded heavily to the stone floor, the bright, glowing gemstone of the staff right in front of my face.
Whimpering, I tried to push away but I couldn’t. My body was paralyzed and my vision kept blurring. I couldn’t think. I couldn’t see.
Everything around me went black.
