Snowstorm: I’m Super Rich in the Apocalypse -
Chapter 263: Guessing and Doubting
Chapter 263: Chapter 263: Guessing and Doubting
Gu Pan took the opportunity to reach the desk and pulled out a camera from the Space, took photos of all the documents on the table, flipped through several pages of the work diary, and made quite a haul.
The only issue was that all the drawers in the desk were locked, and she couldn’t open them just yet, so she went around and snapped photos of the drawers as well, to figure out how to unlock them later.
On the other side, Lu Ruisheng and Lun Wanli’s sorrow had mostly subsided, and they couldn’t keep hugging each other, so Lu Ruisheng cleared his throat softly, signaling Gu Pan.
Gu Pan quietly returned to her original seat and refilled their tea.
Lun Wanli, with eyes red from crying, stood up, walked to a spot in front of the desk, knelt down to pry open a floor tile, and took out a box from underneath, placing it on the desk to open.
Inside were large gold bars, jewelry, and paintings and calligraphy.
Gu Pan knew this must be the old master’s private stash, probably even unknown to the old lady—it was intended as compensation for Lu Ruisheng.
Sure enough, Lun Wanli said to Lu Ruisheng, "These might not be worth much now, but they are still grandfather’s nest egg, you should take them."
After he spoke, he pulled out a stack of contribution points from a drawer, from the main base, and handed them to Gu Pan: "Take these as well, buy whatever you want here, don’t be afraid to spend."
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng, of course, didn’t refuse; there was no need to. Besides, both of them had previously heard from Lu Jianguo that their grandmother’s dowry was substantial, and when they were younger, they had no way to claim it themselves. Later, it was all taken by the old lady. By the time Lu Jianguo and Lu Jianshe came of age and wanted to reclaim it, the old master always found excuses not to give it to them, so now, this was rightfully theirs.
The two of them accepted the offer and thanked Lun Wanli.
Lun Wanli was still very happy: "Good, good, it’s getting late, you all should rest early too, no need to wake up early tomorrow."
Gu Pan and Lu Ruisheng agreed, bid the old master good night, and went downstairs to their room.
Upon reaching the second floor, they saw Lu Ruiming coming out from washing up in the shared bathroom. Neither side spoke, and they went back to their own rooms.
After returning to their room, they checked the cameras to make sure that no one had been in, and then they could rest easy.
Then Gu Pan took out the camera and her laptop, and transferred the photos.
Afterward, the two started to study these pictures.
There were photos of base construction, base breeding programs, factories, and after a while, they discovered a photo of great value, one for countering future disasters.
It contained contingency plans for volcanic eruptions, sandstorms, hailstorms, polar nights, thick fog, pestilence, and rising sea levels—no particular order, each disaster was circled many times with a pen, indicating that the old master had done extensive research.
Gu Pan said, "It looks like these will be the disasters we’re about to face."
Lu Ruisheng nodded, "But we don’t know the sequence."
"True, these disasters may not seem like much at a glance, but having experienced the apocalypse, we know each one is not as simple as it appears."
"That’s right, if the hailstones are as big as fists, they could kill people instantly. It’s very dangerous for those living in top-floor apartments or in single-story houses."
"So, we must be even more cautious going forward, the unknown dangers are always the scariest."
"If we return to No.7 Base, we won’t be able to look after Second Uncle and Second Aunt," Lu Ruisheng sighed, "But then again, the conditions at the main base are better. Should we bring our people to the main base, or should we persuade Second Uncle to join us at No.7 Base?"
Gu Pan also fell silent, finding it a difficult decision to weigh. "Let’s wait and see how things turn out before we decide."
"Right, let’s wait and see." Ruisheng truly couldn’t make a decision at the moment.
After discussing this, it was indeed late, so they washed up and went to bed.
The next day, they still got up early, maintaining their exercise routine as a habit because even in the apocalypse, despite having "Space," one still needed to maintain good health.
Today, Lu Ruiming was also roused by Huang Suzhen to exercise early. After all, she couldn’t let her grandson fall too far behind.
As it turned out, Huang Suzhen soon regretted it. If she hadn’t let Ruiming come out, at most the patriarch would’ve thought Ruiming was lazy or wilful, but performing like a weakling and getting destroyed by Ruisheng and Gu Pan in the exercise was even more embarrassing.
Despite his age, Lun Wanli had always had a habit of morning exercises.
He watched Ruisheng and Gu Pan exercising systematically while Ruiming hung limply on the horizontal bars, like a dead dog, and he suddenly didn’t want to admit that this person was his grandson.
Wait, thinking of this, Lun Wanli suddenly had another thought. Why did this child not resemble a member of the Lu Family at all?
The men of the Lu Family had never been like this in recent years. Before, he had merely thought Ruiming was physically weak or had been spoiled to a lack of masculinity, but now, comparing him with his two grandsons, he suddenly sensed something was amiss. Was Ruiming truly a grandson of the Lu Family?
Seeing Lun Wanli in such a daze worried Huang Suzhen, and she hurriedly whispered to the patriarch, "Mingming has always been physically weak; he can’t compare to Shengsheng."
Upon hearing this, Lun Wanli felt even more unsure. "Physically weak, but why doesn’t he even look like us? Our family members are all tall, but does Mingming even reach one meter seventy?"
Huang Suzhen’s face turned pale. What did he mean by that? Was the old man so disappointed in her precious Mingming? On what grounds?
Her tears were almost falling. "What do you mean? They are both your grandsons. Are you saying just because the younger one isn’t as exceptional as the older one, you don’t want him anymore? Your eldest grandson came back, and now you can’t stand to look at Mingming? Even if he’s not as good, he’s still your grandson. How can you say such things? If the child hears this, wouldn’t he be heartbroken?"
Huang Suzhen didn’t see things the same way as Lun Wanli. Wearing the ’grandmother goggles’ meant that no matter how bad her own grandson was, in her eyes, he was good, and her deep-seated dislike for Ruisheng made her believe that her own grandson was not inferior to Ruisheng.
Lun Wanli frowned. Right, how could he have thought that way? Even if Ruiming didn’t quite resemble the family, he was still his grandson. His third son wasn’t as tall as his first or second son, and Ruiming’s uncle wasn’t tall either. Don’t they say boys take after their maternal uncles? Perhaps he was overthinking it.
He said to Huang Suzhen, "You’re overthinking it. I just meant that Mingming doesn’t seem to have certain traits of our family. However, the child is indeed too weak. He needs more exercise. We can’t protect him for his entire life, so he must have the ability to protect himself."
Hearing this made Huang Suzhen much more comfortable. "Yes, you’re right. Shengsheng and his wife are capable; we don’t need to worry about them. But Mingming is different. He’s been spoiled by his mother. We need to be more attentive in the future."
She didn’t mind pinning the blame on Ruiming’s mother.
Lun Wanli also felt angry when he heard this. "If Zhang Huishu had listened to our advice, would Mingming have turned out this way?"
Huang Suzhen nodded in agreement. "Exactly, if Jianshe had not died so young, Mingming wouldn’t have ended up like this..."
She couldn’t continue speaking as her son’s death genuinely pained her.
Lun Wanli thought of his deceased younger son and also sighed, "Ah, let’s not dwell on the past. Now that Mingming is with us, we need to discipline him properly."
