Chapter 53: Slumber Once More

For the majority of Derek’s life a lot of things had changed. He had gone from being a baby, to being a child, and then to an adult. He had gone from having two living parents to just one, from talking face to face with his father to visiting his grave once a year. Those were changes that he could deal with. Changes that occurred in everyone’s life. But there was one thing that had never changed for him throughout the years.

And that one constant in his life, was that Derek gave the orders, and people followed them. And by people he was not including his mother, the day that woman followed an order coming from Derek. They would be digging his grave that very day and burying him without question.

No one gave her orders. And apart from her, no one gave him orders. Which was why Derek was absolutely shocked to have his PA ordering him around, and not only that, for him to be obeying her without putting up a fight.

But, if he dared refuse, there was a crazy look in her eyes that promised unimaginable pain if he refused to do her bidding. There was no way he was putting himself at risk like that. He had already heard her shriek like a banshee, then he had seen her use super speed. He did not want to test whether or not she had super strength to. He consoled himself as he dragged the bags to the car.

It was completely undignified and did not match his look at all. From head to toe, he looked like a million bucks, people who looked like a million bucks should not be lugging about so many bags.

Why had he felt the need to pack so much anyways? Why had he not reigned himself in when he had been giving his butler instructions on what to pack? But even as he thought that, Derek had no idea what he could have possibly left behind. It was perfectly sound logic to pack enough clothes for a week or two when going away for a single night.

Who knew what might happen? He could deal with a lot of things, but fashion disasters were something that he would avoid for as long as he could.

Having finally made it to the car, Derek threw the luggage in the trunk. Closing the trunk with more force than was necessary, he went to join Emily in the back seat and the car pulled off. With the nightmare motel firmly out of sight, Derek turned to Emily.

They had to address this issue. He would never again be seen dragging bags around, while she strutted up ahead. He would be the one doing the strutting.

"Emily, we have a issue that we need to discuss," He told her. His voice was soft yet firm. A tactic that he often used to command attention.

"Of course, Derek, what would you like to talk about?" She smiled at him as she said it. But there was just something about her tone, about the look in her eyes. It felt like if Derek dared to say one wrong thing, she would throw him out of the car, not even caring that the car was moving.

He had seen the look in her eyes once before, and that time, it had been from his mother. It was jarring seeing it in someone else, and so when Derek, who really wanted to live until he was an old man, saw it. He decided to change his story.

Carrying a few extra pounds was nothing compared to risking his life. So he quickly changed what he was about to say.

"Please, start preparing for a meeting right after the three o’clock one that we are headed to. I want to do a briefing on all the things that we managed to do here," He would also be using the meeting as a way to reassert his power, but that went without saying. And seeing the way her eyes lit up, Emily knew that there would be some vengeance going on when they got back to the office.

With her look of inescapable doom now focused on something else, Derek felt like he could breathe a bit easier. Even so he kept giving her wary looks every now and then. Making sure that in her quest to get things done, she would not roll right over him.

Luckily, the brief trip passed without Derek being attacked, and he counted that as a win. When they finally reached the airport, he went to retrieve the bags without complaint. Not even minding the wide eyed looks that the driver was giving him.

He was a man too, Derek had no doubt in his mind that the man had a few women in his life whose ire he did not want to risk enduring. He had no right to look so surprised.

Making his way into the airport. Derek had the pleasure of watching as the airport employees scrambled as Emily used her army voice on then.

And then, much too soon in his opinion, they were done with the security checks and were up in the air. Their plane pointed in the direction of the city. It was pretty much the same as when they had been on their way to the small town. Except this time, Derek had Emily sitting next to him, instead of out in another section of the aircraft.

They spent a bit of time working on notes for the upcoming meeting, and also for the surprise one that Derek would be calling right after. And without him meaning for it to happen , a miracle occurred for the second time in a row. Derek fell asleep without meaning to, and minutes later, Emily joined him.

The flight attendant, passing by their seats, quickly grabbed a blanket and put it over them. Smiling softly when she saw the pair unconsciously leaning into one another.
