Sleeping With The CEO -
Chapter 258: Chance At Redemption
Chapter 258: Chance At Redemption
There were certain things that just burned the soul. Though Emily did not like to admit it, she was a bit of a sore loser. As an only child, she had never really had to compete with anyone for anything.
During all the games that she used to play in the park with her parents, Emily had always come out on top. Miraculously winning races in the last leg, despite the fact that she had much shorter legs than both her mom and dad. When it came to seeing who could throw a ball the farthest. Hers always went super far.
Her dad’s ball dropping right next to his feet, leaving Emily to just sail to victory.
That was how she had grown up. Just knowing that no matter the game, if she tried her very best, she would find herself on top. As an adult Emily had thought that
that was just what grown-ups did. They let the younger win so that they did not feel too bad. Apparently, Emily’s parents had really spoiled her. Old Lady Edna did not follow such rules, and that woman was an absolute pit viper when it came to games.
They should have left it at that after losing the mini paintball war to her. But their egos would not let them rest. And so, when the games had switched from shooting paintballs at each other. To trying to throw bean bags at targets, the two of them,
upon realizing that old Edna would be there, had signed up for the challenge.
That one they would have won too. Both of them had far better eyesight and stronger limbs. But old Edna had outsmarted them. She had gotten poor Derek out of the game, by flirting with him. On a normal day, an old lady trying to flirt would have been cute.
But as it turned out, old Edna, with the hand knitted sweater that had the picture of a giant kitten on the front. The very Edna who wore a strawberry scrunchie, on her gray hair, and had fire-engine red glasses on, had quite the mouth on her. Not only did she have quite the mouth, she also had one heck of an imagination and had very clearly been an adventurous young lady. The things that she had said to Derek had had even Emily’s eyebrows raising. She had not blamed him when he had chosen to forfeit, stepping back with his face ashen.
To take out Emily, Edna had not even tried too hard.
All that she had done was begin to cough. That one, Emily had ignored. Her eyes on the bull’s eye. But then, Edna had clutched her chest. Gasping in such a pitiful way that Emily had worried that the old woman was about to either have a heart attack or pass out.
So doing what any other good citizen would do. Emily had dropped her bean bag and rushed over, not caring if she was disqualified. A few seconds later, she had cared very much that she had been disqualified, because when she had knelt in front of Edna, the old woman had winked at her before straightening.
Edna had some of the weakest throws ever, but given that she was in much better shape than the rest of the contestants, she had sailed to victory. After that, Emily and Derek had tried to take out Edna in Pin the Tail on the Donkey.
She had wiped the floor with them. That one she’d won fair and square. They’d give it to her. Now after suffering a few losses to Edna. They had decided to just give up and go back to their date.
It was not as though the two of them were hurt by the losses. They were all just games after all.
"We let her win,"
Derek said, and Emily nodded enthusiastically.
"We could have very easily taken her out. The two of us just respect the elderly," Emily agreed. To anybody else, the words might have sounded empty, like the two of them were coming up with excuses, for their very humiliating losses, but they were not.
To come up with excuses would mean that they were hurt over losing to some old lady who was as vicious as a pit viper. Ha! Derek was a CEO and Emily was a very competent personal assistant.
They did not need to win silly games to feel good about themselves. Out in the real world, they were all that. Derek, one hand holding the basket of things they’d bought. The other, gently cradling Emily’s, led her to an ice cream cart, and the two of them bought some.
After finding an empty bench to sit at, Emily dug in with gusto. Derek, who was seated next to her, doing the same.
The two of you are comfort eating. You are hurt.
by the fact that you lost.
A mean voice at the back of her head whispered, and Emily ignored it. They had not lost. They had just given charity to the elderly. Emily was not hurting the least, and neither was Derek. The two of them were just sitting side by side on the bench, digging into their ice cream, their shoulders brushing against one another because they wanted to. They were on a date and they were doing couple things. That was it. They were not licking each other’s wounds at all.
In fact, there were no wounds to lick. Who would be hurt over losing to an old lady? As if the two of them would care about that.
Taking a long lick from her ice cream, Emily looked over at Derek.
"Thank you for taking me here. I like it," She told him, not just saying that to be polite. She really did like it.
Even with all of the losses that the two of them had suffered against the fearsome Lady Edna, Emily was really enjoying herself.
At the fair no one knew who they were. They could just be open as a couple. Capitalizing on that, Emily leaned up, drawing Derek into a kiss. It was meant to be a brief peck on the lips. But it ended up going on for longer, the two of them enjoying the sugary taste of each other’s mouths.
They would have carried on for longer still, but then Emily felt the ice cream in her hand beginning to melt and the two of them had to break apart, to finish off their snacks.
"I think we should start getting ready to head back," Emily said. It was now approaching early evening and they’d had their fun. Derek nodded once. Whether he would have nodded a second time for emphasis, she had no idea. Because the speakers were suddenly on again.
"Threading contest! Threading contest! Everyone who wants to take part in the threading contest, line up!" The same voice that had led to them meeting Edna said. Emily instantly cast her eyes about. Next to her Derek was doing the same, the two of them going still the moment they spotted Edna.
She saw them too, throwing a grin their away and then making her way over to the stall where the threading contest was going to be held.
Emily looked over at Derek and found him looking at her.
"Let’s do this one more time.
just for kicks. Not because we want to prove anything," She said. He grinned at her.
"Yes, let’s,"
