Chapter 257: Old vs Young

When Derek had seen the fair online, he had decided to come, not for his own sake, but for Emily’s enjoyment. He had known that she would love it, and he was glad to be proven correct.

Emily was basically glowing.

Her excitement never waning. If anything, the more stalls they visited, the happier she seemed to get. Throwing pleased looks at Derek from time to time and planting more kisses than he could count on his cheeks and on his lips. T Kisses that Derek found himself wholeheartedly enjoying. It was a very nice feeling being able to be out and about receiving kisses from Emily without constantly keeping an eye out.

At the fair, they were not

Derek Haven and Emily Molson, who happened to hold positions at Haven Group. They were just an ordinary couple, out and about, enjoying some quality time together. They kissed, they held hands, they laughed, and they bought things together. The last one was something that Derek had not seen coming.

He had expected to mostly be paying for whatever things that Emily wanted. He had not thought that he would see anything that would catch his eye. But the wire models definitely had. In the world that they lived in. It was easy to get things in miniature that worked. There were lots, and lots of things like miniature cars that had all of the components that the life-size models had.

The only difference being the size. Those were common, but to have a mini model made not only by hand, but of wire as well. One that had the ability to move, tiny wheels rotating. Now that, was interesting to Derek.

It had not taken too much nudging from Emily for him to cave and buy himself a wire airplane.

If it would not have made him look too geeky and if they’d had more space at the back of the car. Derek would have bought more models. But due to space constraints and because he did not wish to admit to himself just how much he liked the models.

Derek had restricted himself to just one. After buying the model, he had expected the two of them to continue with their browsing, buying a few more things and adding them to their basket. But instead of being among the stalls.

Browsing and buying, chatting amicably with the people manning the little stations...Derek was at war. An actual fight for survival in the middle of a craft fair where the majority of the attendants were over the age of sixty.

If anyone had told Derek that such a thing would be happening to him on his and Emily’s first official date. He would have laughed and laughed, not believing a word out of that person’s mouth.

But that was exactly what was happening.

When the two of them had signed up for the battle. They had been given plastic suits, blue and red helmets as well as elbow and knee pads. The two of them easily putting the stuff on.

He and Emily sharing a triumphant look as they had watched the senior citizens struggling to get into their own protective gear.

They had not said anything. There had not been any need for words.

’We are going to wipe the floor with them.’ Their eyes had said, the two of them certain in their victory. Derek really wished he could go back in time and warn past Emily and past Derek about the dangers of their overconfidence.

The two of them were currently stuck in the maze where the battle was taking place. Said maze was made of haystacks and they were hiding behind one of the bales trying to catch their breaths.

"That old man

is half blind. How on earth is his aim so accurate?" Emily asked, her breathing sounding pained. Derek vaguely wondered if she had bruised her rib when she had dived out of the way of the paintball shots fired by the old man that she was currently complaining about.

"I get where you are coming from. Are the senior citizens here all ex special forces? What about that old woman?!" Derek hissed clutching his side. The old woman in question, a miss Edna, had never stopped smiling sweetly. Looking for all the world like she was out for a lovely stroll in the park.

Derek had approached her, his paintball gun raised. The intent to just gently shoot her someplace that would not hurt too much. Like maybe her arm.

But the old woman had taken advantage, of Derek’s slow and cautious movements. He had barely managed to dodge the barrage of paintballs that she fired. And then upon realizing that Derek was wise to her game and was getting away, the old woman had taken off her shoe and had thrown it at him.

It had hit him on the side, the force of it nearly enough to knock all of the breath out of him. Clearly he had encountered a grandmaster of shoe throwing.

From just that throw, Derek was of the belief that the old woman had quite a large family with lots of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The skill with which she had aimed at him, and then struck him was not something that happened overnight. One had to have practiced.

"We cannot go down defeated by people older than sliced bread. Our egos would never survive," Emily said, and Derek nodded, agreeing.

"We are younger. We are faster. This should be a piece of cake. Let’s do this," She said, and the two of them stood up, paintball guns ready.

What followed was quite probably some of the most intense few seconds of Derek’s life. Emily was taken down after a fierce fight. The final blow coming from an old woman who just rolled by in her motorized wheelchair. At least she had managed to take down the old man beforehand.

"Avenge me!" She cried, dropping her gun and leaning as though about to collapse on a haystack . Only to decide half way down that falling would hurt, so she stopped, and just sat down gingerly, giving him a thumbs up.

With Emily no longer a part of the game, Derek threw himself into it with a vengeance. In her honor, he took out the old woman in the chair, smirking at her shock.

He and Emily had gone into it believing that they were going to win, and he was going to get that win for them. And so Derek dodged and ran, jumping over haystacks, diving this way and that.

Until in the end there were only two left, Derek himself and Miss Edna with the deceptive sweet smile. Taking a breath he took aim and got ready. He might have wanted to win, but he was not crazy with it.

If he fired from the distance that he was at, it was likely to hurt the poor old lady. He had to be close enough to know for sure that the paint would land on her protective gear. She had lost her helmet. So Derek moved forward, getting closer to her. All he had to do was shoot, and he would win.

It should have been over in just a second.

But instead when he reached her, Derek could not deliver the finishing blow. The old woman, Edna, was crying softly.

"What is wrong?" Derek asked, unable to stomach seeing the old woman cry. She sniffled, wiping her tears as she looked up at him.

"You remind me of my grandson," She said, her voice wobbling, and Derek began to feel bad.

Still, he clutched his paintball gun tighter, not lowering it.

"Why would you say that?" He asked. The old woman shrugged, and Derek only had a split second to watch her eyes light up with glee before something hurtled towards him.

He tried to dodge but it was too late. He was too close to move away. And sure enough, a few seconds later, his chest was covered in paint and old Edna was crowing.

"You remind me of him because you are just as gullible as he is!" Old Edna said, smiling so wide, all of her missing teeth were on display.

And that was how the two of them ended up watching old Edna walk away with a basket full of yarn. Hearts breaking, not for the yarn, but because they’d been had by a bunch of old folk.

"We will never speak of this," Emily said. Derek looked down and it wasn’t just Emily.

Staff sergeant Emily was there, looking as though the world had wronged her. Smiling, he dropped a kiss on her temple.

"Whatever you wish, my sweet, whatever you wish," He said, Derek had no problems with that at all.
