Chapter 237: Exes, and Current

The way that the world worked was strange. After Emily had kissed Derek and she had run out of the penthouse. She had been certain that she had ruined everything. A moment of weakness where she had let her guard down and just gone with her feelings, instead of logic had taken away the one good thing in her life.

But somehow instead of destroying everything. The kiss ended up being the final push that the two of them needed to become an official couple.

And Emily’s first day as Derek Haven’s girlfriend was nothing but blissful. She was pretty sure that it was the honeymoon phase. But even if it was, Emily still could not shake the joy that was just radiating from her in waves.

She was someone’s girlfriend and not just any someone. Derek Haven was her boyfriend.

Emily was not a newbie to the dating scene. She’d had other boyfriends before. But Derek might as well have been her first true boyfriend.

He was the first person that she was dating, that knew about her nightmares. Coming into the relationship with nothing but the truth was something else. It felt liberating in a way that all of her other relationships had not been.

Emily had always contributed a great deal to those relationships falling apart. There were some that she had ended before they had a chance to become anything serious. Being sure to nip the feelings in the bud as swiftly, and as painlessly as she could.

Realizing that the person that she was with was a good one, and that if they stayed tied to her for too long. She would be burdening them with all of the baggage that she brought along with her. Emily had never liked herself much after those relationships ended.

For the others who had been in short-lived relationships with her. Things had ended not because of Emily. But because the men had sensed weakness and in realizing that Emily had something big that she was holding back. They had thought that they could use it to their advantage.

Some even going as far as to cheat on her. The excuse always the same.

"I know that something is wrong. But you never say it. How can I be expected to stay loyal to you when you do not trust me with a part of yourself? I had to go out and see what the rest of the world had to offer,"

Emily remembered that particular boyfriend very clearly. They had dated a month, and when she had kicked him to the curb. He had come crawling back a week later. Clearly thinking that just because Emily had her own issues. She was so desperate for love that she would keep taking him back despite his wandering eye.

She had not even given him the time of day, and his shell-shocked look had been worth it. But now Emily had a boyfriend, an actual honest-to-goodness partner. Someone whom she did not need to hide when she was with.

Derek knew her deepest darkest secret. He had known it for months. Just as she knew about his own skeletons. For the first time in her life, Emily got to go into a relationship as just Emily Molson.

She did not need to worry about her sleeping habits accidentally being found out. There would be no need for her to be planning and re-planning. Spending hours each day working around what she would do if she had to spend the night with him. They had already spent many nights together.

It was quite nice despite the complication of Derek being her boss. Emily already felt as though her relationship with Derek was about to be the best that she had ever had.

The PA had spent most of the work day feeling as though she had swallowed a piece of the sun.

She had smiled more, laughed more and she had even found herself having a kind word for Lucas of all people. Though she was pretty sure that he had taken her compliment on his new hairstyle to mean that he had to change it as soon as possible.

But how he took Emily’s genuine compliment was not her problem.

What was her concern however was the fact that she now had a boyfriend.

As she made her way home that Friday evening, Emily could not help but whistle happily.

Unable to stop herself even as she finally made it to the apartment and found her mother there, waiting.

What should have been a quick in and out trip, turned into Emily sitting on the couch with her mum, a bowl of popcorn between them. Guilt making her stay a bit longer even if all that she wanted to do was just head over to the penthouse and see Derek.

Halfway through the movie that they were watching. A handful of popcorn in her hand, her mom spoke up.

"Is it still the same guy?" She asked, not taking her eyes off the screen.

Emily choked on the popcorn that she was chewing. Coughing uncontrollably for a few seconds, hitting her chest until she was finally able to breathe normally. Only then did she turn to her mother.

Earlier that morning she had asked Derek that they keep their new relationship private for a while longer. But looking at her mother Emily knew that she would not be able to lie. She already lied too much, this one lie might just be the straw that broke the camel’s back.

So she came out with it.

"It is the same guy that you asked me about all of those weeks ago. We have only just made it official. So I do not want to jinx it in case it does not last," Emily said.

She had told Derek that she wanted to keep things secret because she wanted to see where the relationship was going first. And if there was one person that Emily could trust not to dig, not to pry too deeply. Then it was her mother. A few seconds later she was proven right, when Jane Molson simply nodded.

"I will not force you to share information you do not want to. But if you feel that you guys are getting serious, you will tell me right," Emily nodded, "Of course," She said. And her mom let the subject drop.

Turning her attention back to the movie, Emily stayed long enough to finish it. And then once it was done, she headed over to Derek’s place. No, not just Derek’s place.

To her boyfriend’s place. That had a nice ring to it.
