Sleeping With The CEO -
Chapter 229: Blame The Bowls
Chapter 229: Blame The Bowls
Whether it was the excitement of finally getting to sleep together again after two weeks of nothing but nightmares and sleeplessness, Emily had no idea. But what she did know for certain was that on Tuesday morning.
After going to sleep in Derek’s arms, the previous night. The two of them woke up an hour early, a whole sixty minutes before their respective alarm clocks were supposed to wake them. For once, Emily was not upset to be losing out on an extra hour of sleep. Looking over at Derek, she realized that he too did not seem too bothered by it.
"What do you say? Should we start the day early, go and get ready and then enjoy a bit of quality time together before you have to head over to your apartment?" Derek asked and Emily found herself smiling. A big smile that made her cheeks hurt.
"You know what? That might be the best proposition that anyone has ever given me on a Tuesday morning," She told him, giving him a sly wink as she threw off her bed covers.
"Really, this is the best one. So you get a lot of propositions on Tuesday mornings?" Derek asked.
Emily shrugged her shoulders, looking over at him.
"Maybe, you never know. I live quite the adventurous life after all, Derek Haven. I am a woman with many hidden sides," She told him. He let out a laugh.
"That much I know. So what was the other proposition? Were you invited to an embroidering contest or did you decide to give skinny dipping a chance?" Emily reached down and grabbed a pillow and tried to throw it at him. She ended up missing. The pillow landing on the other side of the bed.
"I will have you know.
Knowing how to swim is not a prerequisite for skinny dipping. I could have very easily just stayed on the shallows of the water if such an offer were ever made," She told him. Derek put his hands up.
"All right, all right, I get it. Your life is exciting. Maybe you might want to add throwing lessons together with the swimming lessons though," He quipped and before Emily could retaliate with another pillow, he slid out of bed and was out the door. Clearly headed for the downstairs bathroom. Deciding that it was best that she shower too.
Emily made her way into the main bathroom and got ready for the day. A few minutes later when she emerged, skin scrubbed pink, already dressed in the attire that she would be wearing on the way home. Emily felt at ease in a way that she very rarely felt around people who were not her mother. But being with Derek and being in his house just made her feel like all was right in the world. She made her way down to the kitchen and found him already there.
He was slicing fruit, his intention to make a fruit salad clear. And so, without a word, Emily went to the fridge and pulled out a tub of yogurt.
Rather than sitting at the kitchen island and eating. The two of them carried their bowls over to the living room and sat down. Sharing a couch just like they had done the night before. The moment that Derek was seated, Emily instantly got into his space, snuggling closer and digging into her breakfast.
It was something that they normally reserved for weekends, eating together like that. But that Tuesday, it just felt right to do. They had a bit of time after all. Why not use it to cuddle? As they ate, they talked business a bit.
Emily making sure that Derek was up to date with all that he would need to know for the day, and he in turn gave her a heads up on some of the things that he wanted done. All in all it was a calm breakfast with nothing exciting happening.
When breakfast came to an end, Emily’s spoon scraping in a satisfying manner against her empty bowl, she stood.
Automatically leaning over and taking Derek’s own empty bowl in her other hand.
Since he had chopped the fruit, she would be in charge of cleaning up.
But in making her way to the kitchen, Emily made a mistake. When she had sat down, she had put her overnight bag at her feet. At some point during breakfast, she had forgotten that it was there. It forcefully reminded Emily of its presence when her foot became tangled in it. She tried to shake it off. But that proved to be a mistake. Because the moment that Emily raised one leg, she was instantly off balance. And given that in her hands she was holding two bowls, she could not balance herself.
she felt her body begin to tilt and she knew that she was going to face-plant, and face-plant painfully.
Derek, she called out in fear and he looked up at her, right in time for Emily to lose the little balance that she had and begin her swift descent towards the floor. She closed her eyes, bracing for impact.
And sure enough, a few seconds later.
The bowls in her hands went flying and she felt her body come into contact with something solid.
It took a few breaths for Emily to realize that she was not in nearly as much pain as she should have been. In fact, she was not in any pain at all. Finally daring to open her eyes, the first thing that she saw was the very familiar sight of Derek’s broad chest.
It was only once she saw his chest that she realized that his arms were around her waist holding her in place.
Oh, he had caught her...thank goodness for fast reflexes.
Turning her head to the side, Emily saw the bowls. By some miracle they had not landed on the floor and shattered. Instead they had landed on a couch cushion. Despite being upside down, they were absolutely fine. Are you all right? Derek’s voice came from above her and Emily turned her head up, tilting back slightly.
"Oh, Derek, thank you. That could have been-"
Whatever it was that she had been intending to say vanished from her mind the moment that her lips accidentally made contact with Derek’s. Oh!
Emily looked into Derek’s wide eyes, certain that his shocked look matched her own.
Did they just kiss?
Back away, run! A voice at the back of her head screeched, but Emily was still there, still looking up at Derek. They had kissed, hadn’t they? She wondered. And in the next moment it felt like the most logical thing in the world to move forward and plant her lips against his again to see if she had been imagining things. Emily surged up, and their lips met again and this time it was more than just lips, and Derek was not just standing there, stunned.
He pulled her closer. His tongue darting out to lick her lips, a silent question.
Emily answered by opening her mouth, giving him access. Her hands were no longer holding on to Derek’s arms for support. Instead they went around his neck, her eyes slipping shut as their tongues battled for dominance.
At some point as their tongues moved against each other ,Derek retreated. And Emily’s tongue followed past his lips where she proceeded to taste and lick, biting lightly at him.
He tasted like strawberries and honey, all things right with the world, and Emily was instantly addicted.
They kissed and kissed until finally their bodies begged for air and it was only then that they parted. Both of them breathing heavily.
"Did we just-?" She asked, bringing a hand up to gingerly touch her lips.
"I-" Derek said and he looked as wrecked as she felt. What had they done?
What had she done?
She distinctly remembered being the one to surge up. Unable to face Derek anymore, Emily side stepped him, grabbing her bag, and made a run for it. She ran all the way out of the building, never stopping for even a moment. And as she ran, she brushed past a woman, but she barely noticed. But unfortunately for her, the other woman did.
And that woman was none other than one Cassandra Haven. And as she stared at Emily’s retreating back, the older woman’s eyes narrowed. The very thing that she had been searching for, for weeks had finally revealed itself.
