Sleeping With The CEO -
Chapter 227: Sweet Self Betrayal
Chapter 227: Sweet Self Betrayal
After making it through week number two. It would have been safer to go another week without seeing each other after hours. Doing that would have added an extra layer of security to them. The threat of being found out no longer feeling so ever present.
On Monday, despite being tired. Emily still believed that.
She got ready for work with every fiber in her being, believing that when she finally arrived at Haven Group headquarters and saw Derek, she would pull him aside and have a talk with him.
"Derek, I know that it is hard. But I think that it would be in our best interest to add one more week to our abstaining from each other,"
"That way, we will know for sure that your uncle has lost interest and is no longer searching for anything. Alright?" Emily had actually imagined herself saying those exact words. Her little speech ending with Derek looking over at her and nodding in agreement.
"You are absolutely right Emily. This is only a small bit of suffering. An insignificant amount of time in the grand scheme of things. Yes, let us stay away from each other for an extra week and then we can resume with our sleeping schedule later,"
That had been how Emily had thought, things would go. The two of them not at all swayed by emotions, and desires.
After seeing it all in her mind’s eye. Emily had firmly believed that things would work out like that. She had believed that as she made her way out of the apartment. Emily had kept believing it as she had boarded the bus. Even as she had sat next to a chatty old lady. Who had kept showing Emily pictures of her grandbabies.
Emily had continued to cling to the idea that her suggestion would work with a single-mindedness that would have made most people uncomfortable. When Emily finally got to work.
It was to the discovery that Derek had not yet made it in, and so she got busy setting up for the day. She arranged things in his office just the way he liked. She fiddled with the air conditioner until the temperature was just right. And then she went to brew his morning tea herself. Even going as far as to nip outside for a bit and bring his blueberry muffins.
Yes, nothing could go wrong.
She would make her suggestion. Then Derek would see reason and agree. Even if it meant more suffering for them. They would know that they were doing it for the greater good.
But that plan died a horrible death. A death so awful that Emily, the very person who had come up with it, did not even mourn for it. The moment that Derek walked into the office. Looking as though he was about to kill over at any moment. Emily had felt herself begin to waver.
If she gave him her thoughts about them extending their lack of sleep. Derek was most likely to agree.
But just looking at him, Emily knew that the extra week would do some very serious damage to him. It would be cruel to ask that of him. To expect him to keep staying awake night, after night. She at least got to have a little bit of sleep every night, but Derek was not so lucky.
Emily could not take any more rest from him, and so when she walked into his office carrying his tea tray.
Emily did not even mind it, when her mouth instantly took charge. Throwing out the plan that she had come to work, believing so firmly in.
"Derek, this is getting out of hand. Let us turn tonight into a treat, just to get ourselves sorted. To make sure that we have enough in the tank to make it to Thursday night," She told him.
Only after the words had left her mouth did she finally put the tray down. Derek looked from the tray to her, blinkig slowly. His exhaustion clear to see.
"Are you sure?" He asked.
Emily felt something deep within her ache. He sounded so small. So done with everything. What had she been thinking, about to ask this man to extend his suffering? That would have been too inhumane.
Clearly, taking Monday as a treat was the best thought that she’d had all morning. She nodded at him.
"Your uncle has a short attention span.
Even if he were to deny it with his last breath, we both know that that is true. The chances of him still actively looking into whether or not you have a partner have got to have reduced drastically by now. In fact, I think that you have a higher chance of two identical snowflakes falling on you at the same time than you do of your uncle still actively looking into your love life," Reaching over, Derek grabbed a muffin and took a bite.
"Are you sure?
Are you really, really sure?" He asked again. The disbelief in his voice still strong.
That made Emily hurt even more. The man was clearly in more pain than she was. But he was still taking the time to make sure that she was alright with everything.
"Derek, there are very few things in my life that I have ever been so certain of. You and I
Need this. In fact, we deserve it. Tonight, we are sleeping," She told him.
And as she said those words, she saw a bit of life return to his eyes. The green orbs shining, twinkling with an inner light as he looked at her. "Thank you," He said, sounding tired. And Emily gave him a sad smile.
"There is no need for you to thank me. Both of us are in the same boat. We have been suffering through this. And we do not have to do so any longer," Derek looked at her, a small smile playing at the corner of his lips.
"I am not thanking you for that. I am thanking you for sticking with me through everything. In all of this, the major obstacles are all coming from my side. My status as the CEO and now my uncle be meddlesome. But through it all, you have never once complained or made it seem as though I am adding more difficulty to your life," His eyes glistening, Derek finished with words that had her feeling faint.
"Thank you for that, Emily Molson. Thank you," He said, and Emily could only nod.
Not knowing what else she could say to that.
He offered her a muffin, and she took it, her cheeks pink.
Muffin in hand, Emily turned and left, heading back to her own desk. Her heart feeling all warm and mushy out of nowhere.
