Chapter 208: A Good Man

Derek had taken the longest shower possible. Making sure that all of the shower heads were hitting him full force. The warm pressure welcomed as he let the water slide down his skin. Once he had finished.

Derek had headed to his room and gotten dressed. Not at all surprised to find it empty. But the surprise had come when he had gone downstairs.

At the top of the stairs he had looked down and Emily had been there. Flipping pancakes in the kitchen without a care in the world. For a brief second Derek had frozen where he stood, torn between turning around and heading back to the room. And just swallowing his pride and heading towards Emily. In the end, he had decided to go to her. Doing so despite knowing the fact that Emily might want to use the opportunity to talk. Sure enough, the moment that Derek had gotten comfortable enough to take a sip of his tea. Emily had come out with it, and admitted that they had to talk. That the elephant in the room had to be addressed.

Rather than sit there, and hear from her about how uncomfortable he had made her. Derek had decided to just nip the whole thing in the bud. And so being as calm as he could manage given the situation, Derek had let Emily know without beating around the bush that she was free to go. That he would not hold her to something that she was uncomfortable with. Sure, his decision meant that they were both going back to the sleepless world that they had existed in before they had discovered that the two of them somehow cancelled out each other’s sleeping problems. But it had to be done. Morning wood was a normal part of every healthy adult male’s life. It would not change no matter what Derek did. So rather than keeping Emily bound by the unofficial contract.

He had decided to just let her go.

But to his surprise, instead of taking the out, and just leaving without there being any hard feelings. Emily was refusing to listen to reason.

"Emily, what do you mean you are not leaving? I have literally just told you that this will not go away. Most likely, now that my body is almost fully recovered from the effects of lacking proper sleep.

I will be popping boners almost every morning. It is not something that is going to go away. Are you sure you can deal with that?"

"Not just dealing with it in a sense of enduring simply because you want to get some sleep. But in a sense of will you be able to look at me the same, knowing about that side of me," Instead of treating the situation with the seriousness that it deserved. Emily looked over at Derek and smiled.

When the smile vanished, and he thought that she was going to say something reasonable. She just threw her head back and laughed. She laughed so hard she almost fell off her chair, and had it not been for Derek’s quick reflexes. She would have ended up face first on the floor. But instead he caught her by her shoulders and righted her. Not moving his hands away in case she lost control again, and began laughing with abandon. But after that initial jolt of laughter. The sound tapered down somewhat, and so too did her body’s shaking. When he was certain that she was not about to fall. Derek slowly pulled his hands back, and he folded them over his chest, giving Emily his most unimpressed glare.

"Emily Molson. This is no laughing matter," He said. Wiping a tear, Emily looked over at him.

"I know, I know, and I’m sorry that I laughed. But come on, Derek, you have got to see this from my point of view as well. We are talking about something that is completely normal. Something that is natural. Yet the way that you are addressing it you would swear that you have caught some rare disease that turns you into a raging beast or something and you are scared that you are going to attack me in your sleep, and you will wake up with a room that has been redecorated and the walls splattered with my blood,"

She said all of that with a smile, and Derek could not help but breathe out an exasperated sigh.

"Emily, this is not funny. This is a big deal for me. I do not want you to feel uncomfortable in my presence. And I know that waking up with me in that state during the times when we share a bed can get old very quickly. And I do not want you to ever feel uneasy when with me because of that," He paused, taking a deep breath before continuing.

" I feel like if we just ignore this and it keeps happening, I will be no better than my uncle who is always taking advantage of people," That final part at least seemed to stir something within Emily. All of the humor vanished from her face.

She took a deep breath, then slowly let it out. All the while looking directly at Derek.

"Never say that again," Emily said, her voice soft but firm.

"What?" Derek asked. Why did she suddenly look angry? Her body was shaking slightly, but this time not with humor.

"I know that Sebastian Haven is your uncle. But physical similarities aside Derek, you are nothing like that man. Take your reaction to this whole thing as an example. This is not something that you can control. It just happens, as is the case with most men,"

"But for my sake, you have spent the better part of the week feeling embarrassed and wrecking your brains. Trying to come up with a solution for something that does not need solving. Those, Derek Haven, are not the actions of a man who is seeking to take advantage of anyone. In fact, they are the exact opposite,"

"It shows that you are a good person, Derek. That you were willing to end all of this just because you thought that I might be uncomfortable,"

"Aren’t you?"

Derek could not help but ask. And Emily shook her head.

"At the end of the day, you and I are adults. We get to pick and choose what we are comfortable with. And the whole situation with your morning friend does not bother me. Sure, it is a new experience since I have never woken up with a man before you. But we are grown. Let us just accept it as apart of our arrangement and keep going,"

Her thoughts on the matter voiced, Emily turned away from him and dug into her food. Eating with such single-mindedness that it was clear to Derek that, as far as she was concerned, the conversation was done. Derek stared at her for a while longer.

Feeling a bit shell-shocked, he turned back to his own meal, cutting off a piece of his pancake and shoving it into his mouth. He had expected Emily to want out, but if she could accept the situation for what it was. Then he too would stop obsessing over it.

"Do you want to take a nap after this?"

He asked after he had swallowed his bite. Emily looked at him and smiled.

"I thought you would never ask,"
