Chapter 187: Domestic Sleep
Thanks to the uniqueness of his affliction. Derek had never felt confident enough to spend the night with anyone that he was interested in. And because he and his exes did not spend the night together. He had never woken up with anybody else next to him.
So Emily was a first for him, in many ways.
It did not matter that the bed sharing was strictly platonic with no sexual intimacy involved.
It was still a milestone in Derek’s book. And as he blinked awake on Saturday morning, for once his body being the one to decide that it was time to wake up instead of the shrill cry of an alarm. Or like that one memorable time...Emily’s scream.
It was nice.
Waking up like that, and rather than instantly going into active mode and starting to do things that needed doing, or getting ready for something. Derek just lay in bed, enjoying the heavy feeling that came with trying to shake off a good night’s rest.
His mind still barely functional. Derek turned his attention to Emily. She was fast asleep against him. Her head pillowed on his bicep. She was drooling slightly. In fact, there was a small wet patch on the sleeve of the white shirt that Derek had worn to bed the previous night.
He should have been disgusted. Should have wanted her off of him immediately.
From the moment that he had noticed her drool pooling on his shirt.Derek should have wanted her gone. He should have found somewhere else to be, unbothered by whether or not him suddenly leaving the bed would wake her. But Derek did not want to do that.
Emily looked so peaceful.
In fact, not only was she drooling, but when he listened, he could hear tiny little snores coming from her. It was rather cute. And that was before Derek took in the hair.
When they had gone to bed, she had had it in a ponytail. Not the usual tight buns that Emily preferred. But it had been a similar look. Throughout the night, whether it was because of him or it was her doing. The headband that she had been using had somehow slipped off, freeing Emily’s hair, and it was now a wild bird’s nest atop her head. It looked as though if Derek were to poke it.
He would find some creature living there. Unable to help himself, he gently reached forward and patted her head lightly. Trying to be as gentle as possible. But in the end, it was not gentle enough.
That simple action was enough to wake Emily. Luckily enough, Derek saw from the way she twitched, that she was about to open her eyes. So he was able to pull his hand back and act like he too, was waking up.
Looking anywhere but at her, Derek gave Emily time to come awake. It was only once the warm weight of her head was no longer laying across his upper arm. That Derek looked over at her, and he found her staring back.
"Good morning," She rasped.
"Good morning, Emily" Derek said back and he was shocked by how deep his voice was.
After doing a full body stretch. Her mouth wide open as she gave the type of yawn that most women would rather die than do in front of a guy. Emily turned to look back at Derek.
"Is there breakfast?" She asked and he had to laugh.
Leave it to Emily to get straight to the heart of things. He was pretty certain that other ladies would have been faking as though they did not know the feeling of hunger. All because they were in bed with him. But bed or not, Emily was always Emily. Still laughing, Derek rose up.
"Yes, there is breakfast but I am afraid that it is just going to have to be cereal today. Unless of course you are in the mood for cooking because I most definitely am not," Derek told her, and Emily shrugged.
After brushing their teeth. The two of them standing side by side in Derek’s main bathroom. Their gazes locked in the mirror. They went downstairs.
And sure enough, Derek still had some cereal left. He grabbed it while Emily went to find the bowls that they would be eating from. It was a simple matter to fill them both and then to pour some milk over them.
"Do you take yours with sugar?" Derek asked, and Emily nodded.
While she added her sugar, Derek drizzled some honey over his. Breakfast was a calm affair. The two of them did not fill the silence with unnecessary conversation. And for a long while, all that could be heard was the sound of their spoons clinking against ceramic bowls.
When they finished it only took a few seconds for Derek to wash up the bowls.
And once he was done, he turned back to Emily.
"Do you have anything else that you would rather be doing?" Emily shrugged.
"There were a few things, but if you have something better in mind, I believe that I can be persuaded," She told him. Derek leaned back on the balls of his feet, pretending to think.
Emily looked at him expectantly, as though waiting with baited breath for whatever it was that he had to say. The two of them pretending like there was actually any other option.
"Well, if whatever it is that you wanted to do is not too important, there is one thing that I do have in mind," Derek said and Emily leaned forward.
"And what could that thing be, Derek Haven," She asked, and Derek held out his hand. Without a word, Emily slipped her smaller one into his, and let herself be led away. "Just where are we going," Emily asked, her voice light.
Without looking back, Derek answered her "To sleep," He said, leading her back upstairs. There were no words said after that. Words were not needed.
