Sleeping With The CEO
Chapter 183: A Treat

Chapter 183: A Treat

Staring up at his PA as she stood in front of his desk, Derek realized that she was right.

Yes, they might have played childish games during their lunch hour. Trying to come up with an appropriate schedule for the both of them.

But in the end, what it all boiled down to, was that they had been taking the joy out of the miracle of sleep that they had found. Both of them unconsciously trying to mold the thing into something that they could recognize. And what it was that they were comfortable with was business.

So that was exactly what they had tried to turn the arrangement into, a transaction. Emily was right. It was not a transaction.

This was more than that. It was personal. It was private. It was about their health. It was about their life. It deserved to be treated differently. And not only did Emily just point out such a huge thing, such a major mistake that they would have been making had they continued?

She had also introduced a concept that Derek had not thought of when it came to sleep.

A treat.

"Let us take this Wednesday as a treat," She’d said, and his mind was blown.

Derek was rich, not only had he been born rich. He had been born richer than most. In fac, if there was a word for somebody who was beyond rich, then Derek was it. Treats were everyday things for him.

If he wanted a yacht, he got a yacht. If he wanted to go on vacation, he went on vacation. If he liked the vacation so much, he wanted to buy it.

Then he would buy that island and make others pay to go on the same vacation that he enjoyed whenever he wanted. Make it cars, make it jewelry, whatever it was that he wanted, he got. If he wanted ice cream made with gold leaf.

Then that would be his treat. Caviar, truffles, diamonds, jades, platinum, gold, those were the treats that Derek had grown up with. Even shares that were worth millions were treats to him. But what Emily was proposing... was something else.

Sleep as a treat.

Something to reward himself with, because he had earned it. He deserved the chance to rest as much as everybody else. But it had just never occurred to him before that such a thing could be possible for him.

Being able to say, ’I am sleeping in this morning or tonight, or I am going to bed early,’ But here she was offering it.

"Are you sure? What will you tell your mother?" He asked.

"I figured that I would give her some story about an after hours meeting tonight. I will tell her we need to come up with a schedule that will not clash with anybody else’s for the long term ’project we will be working on," Derek nodded and she continued.

"It feels better to feed from the truth after all.

You and I did just spend our lunch hour coming up with a proper schedule. She will be easy to convince. She doesn’t know me as the liar that I am," Emily said, her voice cracking at the last bit, and she turned away. Derek was instantly on his feet.

"Emily, stop. If you are a liar, then so am I. But the two of us only lie to our mothers because we have to. This is a way of protecting her, just as much as I lie to protect mine,"

Shaking her head, she turned back to him and nodded.

"You are right. This is a way of protecting her. It’s just that sometimes it gets a bit hard for me with all the lying that I have to do, and then to just see her trust me so easily. It is hard," Emily said. And Derek nodded too, he understood.

He had been lying to his mother for years as well, and it had never gotten better. In fact, now that he thought about it, at some point, he would have to come up with a lie of his own.

"Sometimes my mother loves just showing up out of the blue. Do you have anything that you think might be a valid excuse that I can tell her?"He asked.

"The company thing will not work out. Last time when I came to the diner and was finally able to talk to you, I actually had to sneak out of my own penthouse in order to come and see you," Emily let out a snort. And then she looked at him, with wide eyes.

"Sorry, I did not mean to laugh. I just cannot imagine the great Derek Haven tiptoeing out of anywhere. Are you not the one who told me that you fear no one and nothing?"Derek gave her a look.

"Emily, I have seen you face down an angry mob. But when it comes to saying ’no’ to your mother, I have also seen you in a state of panic. Let the pot, not call the kettle black," He told her, and she nodded, conceding the point.

"Is it possible for you to tell her that you have something at work anyways. Just to see if she will buy it?" Derek shook his head.

"No. My mother might no longer be the CEO, but she still has a very good knowledge of what goes on at Haven Group. If I were to lie about having some form of secret project, she would know within a matter of hours, that I was not being honest. It is best that I come up with something that she cannot be able to investigate,"

"Then why not tell her that you are going out for a night in the town? The days we have chosen match up with it right? Thursday, Friday, Saturdays and Sundays? Or is she also in touch with what happens with the city’s nightlife?" Derek shook his head, trying and failing to imagine his mother in a club.

If she were to ever see all those writhing bodies, he was sure she would faint from shock.

"That is actually a very good idea," Derek told her.

"So tonight it is," Emily asked and Derek nodded.

"But we’ll have to start a bit later. You remember that I have that fundraiser this evening?" He asked and Emily nodded. "Will I be needed there?" Derek gave her a thoughtful look. Initially he had been planning to just go on his own.

But now that he thought about it, her being there would really help a lot. "You know, now that you mention it, there has been this diplomat’s daughter who has been throwing herself at me. You making an appearance would be a great help," Emily smiled.

And Derek smiled back.
