Chapter 178: Not Singing Backup

Chapter 178: Not Singing Backup

When it came to the type of relationship that she and Derek normally had. If Emily were to describe it, she would use terms normally used in music. For example, if Derek was the lead singer, then she was the backup singer. If he came up with a tune, then she supplied the beats.

It was always him leading. And whatever it was that he came up with, she made sure to back him up so that they made something that was cohesive. That was the way that things were for them. But in this situation, it seemed that the status quo would have to change. Had Derek really just given her a list of days for when he would be ready to have a good night’s rest and just expected her to go along with it?

Emily looked at him, expecting him to take his words back and say that he was only playing a joke on her. But instead, he continued to look at her seriously. And she realized that she would have to set him straight. "What do you mean I have another thing coming?" He asked. And Emily shrugged. Rather than answering right away, she cut into her duck breast.

The tiny piece of meat cost more than the most expensive pair of shoes she owned. And as Emily took a bite of it, she had to suppress a moan. It was money well spent. The duck breast had earned the right to cost more than shoes. With that thought, she took a second bite. It might have seemed as though she was ignoring Derek.

But it was the exact opposite. In fact, she was trying to find a way to address him without letting her emotions get in the way. For you see, whenever she got angry, Emily had a bit of a temper, and she knew that if she did not let herself work out her stress by chewing the meat as thoroughly as possible.

Then no doubt, the moment that she opened her mouth. Whatever it was that she unleashed on Derek, would not be anything pretty. So she chewed slow, swallowed and then she took a sip of her drink for good measure. Only then did she turn her full attention to Derek.

"Derek, listen to me. I hear you. Trust me, I really do hear you. But I will need more clarification on what exactly you just said. Can you repeat that for me?" He sighed, looking at her as though she were the problem.

"Emily, it is not that hard. I just told you that I will be taking Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays as the days for us to spend the nights together. It works. Think of it. When do we need to be the most alert? We need to be the most alert when we are at work. The corporate world is a jungle. A wild, and ruthless jungle that you and I have been barely able to cling to life in, due to suffering from our respective sleeping problems. But now we have each other, we can sleep four times out of the work week and be able to handle everything that is thrown our way. Those days make the most sense. There is nothing to refuse there. Please see reason," He said, and gave her a look. Silently begging her to understand his point of view. Regretfully, that was not going to happen. Emily put her cutlery down. Clearly, this was going to need all of her attention. "Is there another reason why I should go along with those days?" Derek gave her another disbelieving look. He shrugged.

"Because I’m your boss," He said, and he genuinely seemed to believe that was a good enough reason.

Picking up a napkin, Emily gently wiped at the corners of her mouth. Then she put it down.

It seemed that she would have to do something that she had not been wanting to do. You see, Emily’s temper was a force of nature. When she had been younger, it had gotten her out of many situations, but had also gotten her into them too.

But around Derek, she tried to hold it back. But clearly, this was a case where the man needed to be told a few things to get him to listen.

"Derek when you look at me, what do you see?" She asked. He shrugged "You," He said, and Emily nodded.

"What is my name?" She asked. Now he was looking at her like she had somehow drank a spiked alcoholic beverage.

"Emily Molson," He said with a raised brow... you know that...He did not add that last part, but the way in which he was eyeing her said that he was thinking it.

"Exactly Derek, my name is Emily Molson. See how you just said Emily Molson and not personal assistant Emily Molson? That is because we are talking about a personal matter. And when it comes to a personal matter, your rank over me does not count. So you and I are going to sit here. And we are going to negotiate days that work for the both of us. Not you just coming here throwing a list of random days at me and expecting me to just go along with it because ’you’re my boss’," She ended by making air quotes around the you’re my boss. Letting him know, exactly what she thought of that. It might have been true, but for him to bring it up right when Emily suggested that he come up with something else to convince her why she should agree with his days was just bad form.

Breathing through her teeth, Emily picked up her cutlery once again, and cut into her meat. She could no longer taste it anymore. Too angry to even do so. She was always caught off guard whenever Derek showed his past as a spoiled rich kid because he was normally so down to earth.

But these little bursts of entitlement never failed to get her riled up. She remembered that day when they had gone to the solar panel plant, and she just felt herself getting angrier. Taking a deep breath, she finished off her food and once she had swallowed the last bite, she found Derek staring at her, his mouth opening and closing.

"Lovely, as listening to you has been, now it is my turn. Here is my idea. I am proposing Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Do you know why I propose those days Derek?" He shook his head.

"I am proposing those because Wednesday is in the middle of the work week, where we all need a pick me up. And then we take the rest of the days, so that we do not confuse our bodies. We get used to sleeping in that cycle. That way it becomes easier to rest. See, there is a valid point put across, and then explained logically," She smiled at him again, but the expression held no humor. Rather than him freezing like he had the last time that he had seen hints of Emily’s temper, Derek rallied quickly.

"I hear you, but listen to me. My way is best,"

Clearly this was something that he wanted just as badly as she did. And when he continued, Emily knew things were about to get heated.

"If it is points and goals and all that other stuff mapped out that you want, in that case, this is what I have..."
