Sleeping With The CEO
Chapter 145: No Rest Needed

Chapter 145: No Rest Needed

"So, does this mean that I can expect you back at work on Monday?" Derek asked, and Emily had never been tempted like that in her life. She wanted so badly to just nod her head to tell him yes.

’Yes Derek I will come back to Haven Group and be your PA again,’But instead of nodding Emily found herself shaking her head.

The way something in his eyes dimmed and seemed to go out at her shaking her head made Emily want to take it back. It made her want to nod and tell him that she did not mean to say no, but she could not bring herself to do that. This was not just about him, and making him happy. It was about her as well.

And as much as she needed sleep, she also needed other things like food and being certain that she would be taken care of. So before she could agree to sleep with him and see if it worked.

She had to get something straight first, instead of just jumping into the situation without a second thought. After all, if things did not work out, she was the one who stood to lose the most. So she could not just go into it blindly, not even trying to cover her bases in case something went wrong.

This was not the time for her to be taking decisions with her heart. Her brain had to be fully on board so that she could negotiate the best deal possible.

"I get it. Believe me, I understand. I too want to have a good night’s rest for once in my life without being woken up by a nightmare that I cannot even properly decipher. But in as much as I want to have a good night’s rest, I also want to be secure..."

"Emily, believe me, I will not touch you in any inappropriate way. It is just sleep. I promise. I just want to sleep," He said, interrupting her before she could go on.

Emily shook her head again. "It is not about that, Derek. Despite the misunderstanding that we had, I know that you are an honourable man. You would not do anything untoward. That is not the kind of security that I am talking about,"

"I mean that I want to be secure when it comes to my job. If I agree to this, and you and I share a bed. But then we discover that our sleeping problems having gone away that one night that we slept together had nothing to do with either of us. But was rather just some random act of fate. What will happen to me then? Because it seems to me that that is the only reason that you want me back at my job. If the sleeping thing fails, what guarantee do I have that I will still have a place to go to work in the morning? That not only will I still be employed, but that I will carry on having a good working relationship with you? What if this changes things? What if it shifts the way that you and I interact to the point that we can no longer stand the sight of each other? What if after this you look at me and all you can see is yet another failed remedy for your sleeping problem?" She paused, catching her breath before she went on again.

"I have gone through many possible cures in my time Derek, and most of the time after I am done with something and it does not work out, I never want to see it again. I do not wish to be that for you. So I need your promise, your word, not as a CEO of Haven Group, but as a man. As Derek Haven, I need your guarantee that if I agree to sleep with you, and it does not work, it will not in any way affect my position at Haven Group. Even though I quit, I still love that job. I would not have stayed so long if I did not. But if I go back and then when the two of us share a bed and things don’t work out. If you start treating me differently, I will not hesitate to just go,"

As Emily had been speaking, the crestfallen look that Derek had had since she had shaken her head had slowly been vanishing from his face. And now as he looked at her, it was with a look that he often had on his face when he was not just listening to someone, but when he was really paying attention, taking into consideration everything that they said. Good, at least he was not just humoring her. "Emily," He began and something warm and soft uncurled in her stomach. "Not only are you a decent human being, you are also an excellent PA," She scoffed, unable to help the disbelief that came with the sound. Derek shook his head. "No, I am not just saying this to flatter you. I am being serious. Over the past few weeks, I have come to appreciate just how good you are at your job, and how important the decency that you seem to just give out so freely is,"

The denial that had been at the tip of her tongue died there. He was being serious. He actually recognized that she was good at her job. Carefully choosing to ignore the part where he had called her a decent human being, Emily focused on what he was saying.

"Even if the two of us share a bed and it does not work out, I want you to know that your job will be secure. Nothing will change in the professional sense. Yes, sleep is important. But you are way too valuable, not only as an employee. But as a human being for me to just mess things up between us just because us sleeping together did not work. So please, please just say yes. And the two of us can give this thing a try. And come Monday morning, you will be back at your post as PA. Your office misses you," He finished.

It had been a lot of words said in a rush. To someone who did not know Derek, they would have just taken the words as they were. But Emily heard the three simple, yet unsaid words in Derek’s explanation ’I miss you,’ And her heart fluttered.

If there was ever such a thing as a perfect answer to a question, then Derek had nailed it. Emily smiled at him, that warm thing that had unfurled in her stomach when he had begun speaking, now spreading to the rest of her body. But before she could give him an answer, the doorbell jingled and when Emily looked up it was not a customer. Instead it was the day’s staff. Oh, had so much time passed already?

Standing up, she gave Derek a look. "Come back tonight. I will give you an answer then, she told him," He stood too, giving her a look, his brow furrowed. "But Emily, tonight is Sunday night and work is on Monday morning. If you say yes, then you will have to come in after a night of work here," He pointed out, sounding incredulous. Emily flashed her teeth at him, suddenly feeling as though she could take on the world and win.

"Exactly. It’s not like either of us need to sleep,"
